This program is designed for students who want to understand human behaviour and use this knowledge to promote the mental health of individuals, families, groups and communities. Students are exposed to a range of counselling and psychotherapy approaches as well as a strong foundation in psychology research and theory. In the practicum and work term, students obtain experience with different populations and working environments that allows them to explore career options and practice the skills that prepare them for employment or graduate studies. The curriculum fosters an understanding of diverse sociocultural factors, lifespan development, theory and practice in a range of counselling and psychotherapy approaches, ethical and evidence-based professional practices, as well as the research methods and psychological theories that inform counselling and psychotherapy practice.

In this graduate level program, students learn to provide a client-centred and client driven continuum of treatment for individuals with addiction problems. With a solid framework of individual and group counseling skills, the students study individual, gender and societal considerations and the resulting treatment implications. They practise motivational interviewing techniques and learn the importance of matching client needs with intervention options. In addition, students reconstruct education and prevention strategies and design, facilitate and evaluate such tools.

Students develop the knowledge and skills required to support people with developmental disabilities across the lifespan. Utilizing person directed planning, students advocate for self-determination in individuals with developmental disabilities, and facilitate the development of natural supports and opportunities for full community participation.

Areas of study includes intellectual, physical and mental disabilities, spectrum disorders, support options, health and well-being, social relationships, active lifestyles, community building, stages of human development, augmentative communication, pharmacology and medication administration, teaching and intervention strategies, support planning for individuals and their family, counselling, and professional development. Students consolidate this learning in fourteen weeks of supervised field placements.

Learn to work with children and youth who exhibit social, emotional and behavioral problems that may be associated with mental health and cognitive issues, socioeconomic factors, trauma and abuse, and involvement with the justice system. Child and Youth Care practitioners engage with at-risk children, youth and their families as they navigate these challenges and build on strengths and capacities to facilitate positive changes. Students explore, practice, and implement a variety of evidence informed therapeutic prevention and intervention strategies that are based on a foundational understanding of risk and resiliency, the ecological perspective, relational practice, human development, family systems, cultural diversity and exceptionalities. To enhance learner experience, we emphasize experiential interactive learning, community service and social entrepreneurship.

Students develop knowledge and skills demanded by the rapidly evolving safety and security industry. Areas of study include investigative techniques, defensive skills and use of force theory, security procedures, crisis intervention, emergency management and cyber security.

During a common first year with the Police Foundations and Community and Justice Services programs, students are provided with an overall understanding of criminal justice and law enforcement in Canada, and they have the opportunity to transfer between these programs after the first year. Second-year students develop the specialized knowledge and skills demanded by today''s security and investigation industry.

In this program, students are provided the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to effectively assume the role of a helping professional in the diverse and complex field of social services. Students are challenged to examine their beliefs and values; to develop interpersonal communication skills; and to promote values of social justice, human dignity, and equity. Students gain knowledge and skill development in interviewing, communication, and relationship building; effective membership and leadership in groups; working with families; and utilizing evidence-based decision-making. Faculty continue to be committed to a teaching and learning practice that embraces and promotes equity and inclusion, with a current emphasis on Indigenous awareness and gerontological issues. There are opportunities to engage in the community through community service learning and field placement.

Students focus on the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to assist veterinary professionals in the practice of Veterinary Medicine and also in animal care settings. Students learn the handling and restraint of animals as well as basic animal husbandry and clinical procedures. Emphasis is on companion animals. Students also learn a variety of basic diagnostic laboratory techniques, surgical support procedures, receptionist and client relation skills. Students learn and reinforce their skills and knowledge through a combination of lecture and hands on laboratory practice in the on-site veterinary hospital.

Students learn to provide client centered, strength-based therapeutic recreation services using the therapeutic recreation process. Students acquire the skills to complete client assessments and to develop, implement and evaluate group and individual therapeutic recreation programs. A variety of facilitative techniques are explored in order to assist individuals to participate in meaningful recreation and leisure experiences that will achieve health related goals, improve functional ability, and increase quality of life. 

Work-integrated learning
This program includes an internship component. During your final semester, you will take part in a supervised, structured work opportunity and apply your academic knowledge in a setting directly related to your program.

This program provides an opportunity for students to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to be an integral member of a veterinary health care team. Students will explore the range of activities carried out in companion and/or large animal practices, animal shelters, biomedical facilities, zoos or wildlife facilities. Through in- class theory and simulations, combined with actual clinical experience in local facilities, students learn to care for and handle animals, understand the basic principles of normal and abnormal life processes, and carry out routine laboratory and clinical procedures. Typical activities include obtaining and recording patient histories, collecting and/or processing specimens, preparing patients, instruments and equipment for surgery, assisting in medical and surgical procedures, providing specialized nursing care, taking and developing x-rays

The Honours Bachelor of Police Studies degree encourages a broadened critical understanding of the nature, role and function of policing. Students will explore a variety of topics offering opportunities for careers in law enforcement. The program learning outcomes value an integrated learning approach to police education that will provide a diverse range of students with the critical mix of professionalism, technical/legal expertise and analytical skills necessary to succeed in justice-related careers. This multi-dimensional degree complements, rather than duplicates, existing educational initiatives, offering courses that encourage increasing levels of thinking and analysis, which are dynamic in design, rationale and delivery. The learning outcomes are designed to directly calibrate with the policing community and its high professional standards.
