In today’s evolving knowledge-based economy, individuals with the practical ability to apply social sciences and humanities knowledge are sought after assets.

The diploma in Applied Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH) combines a set of core courses with elective options that give students a critical foundation to enter today’s workforce and to transfer successfully into degree programs in social sciences and humanities. The DASSH curriculum is selected to be applied and transformative. DASSH combines theoretical, experiential, and technical learning that is a foundation for any knowledge-based career whatever degree program in social sciences or humanities a student may choose to pursue.

DASSH students acquire technical skills through courses in digital media, software use, and financial literacy, including working with an external client on an applied project in the final semester. Graduates are able to demonstrate to prospective employers the practical value of the skills and knowledge gained through their course of study. The DASSH diploma program chooses core Social Sciences and Humanities courses that are required for success in a variety of career areas including business, law, journalism, government, communications, public administration, the non-profit sector, and information technology and management.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the Applied Social Sciences and Humanities diploma program, students will be able to:

• Communicate information effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes using appropriate format and tone through structured written, oral, and visual presentations 
• Use social science, psychological, and humanities knowledge to identify and think critically about social interpersonal and technical issues, problems, and challenges 
• Accurately represent, interpret, and explain data in graphs, spreadsheets, and reports 
• Produce, read, and interpret financial statements and plan budgets using appropriate methods, tools, and technology
• Find and evaluate information sources for credibility, reliability, and logic using a variety of platforms and formats

In a time of increasing globalization, where human activity is now seen to have far reaching, often adverse, implications for the worlds ecosystems it is essential to have the awareness, knowledge, skill and experience to address these issues.  Environmental understanding, protection and remediation are significant, growing concerns in today’s society.  Environmental Studies at Langara College is an interdisciplinary program within the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. It draws from four critical study areas - biology, chemistry, english, geography – as well as including a number of specific environmental courses.  Elective courses are chosen from a wide range of subjects to suit a particular student’s interests.  A one-week field school is conducted at the end of the second year. 

The Post-Degree Diploma in Accounting (PDD-A) is for students who hold a bachelor's degree and wish to pursue a career in accounting. Applicants who do not hold a degree in business or commerce are advised that this is a very rigorous program. It meets the requirements for entry-level education of the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program (PEP).

Graduates of this program will meet the entry requirements for further education/certification with the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program (PEP). Some of the many areas with career opportunities include:

The Social Service Worker (Gerontology) Certificate program prepares graduates for employment in the community-based seniors’ services sector. This entry-level certificate program does not require applicants to have previous post-secondary experience. The program also ladders directly into the existing Diploma in Gerontology program at Langara College for those who would like advanced certification.

The 8-month program is the only certificate program in British Columbia that equips graduates with the necessary skills and competencies needed to support older adults and their families using a ?strengths-based and social justice approach.

The applied social service aspect of the program is unique from other programs which focus on research or health care.  In this interdisciplinary program, students gain a broad and critical understanding of aging processes and social policy issues that affect older persons and their families.

The program is ideal for individuals without experience in the field who want to enhance their knowledge and engage in direct service with older adults, as well as individuals with current or prior experience wishing to complete a specialized credential. Working from a holistic perspective, and drawing on the disciplines of social work, gerontology, psychology and recreation, students develop advocacy skills and strategies to support and respond to individual and systemic issues to improve the lives of older adults. Students also gain direct experience working with older adults through completing over 200 practicum hours in a field practicum setting.

The program curricula and practica prepares students ?with no prior experience for employment in various settings, such as residential senior living settings (independent, supported, assisted, long term care residences), neighbourhood houses, At Home Programs, senior centres, adult day programs, recreation centres, and other community-based senior settings. It  also enhances the knowledge and skills of students with current or prior experience in the field with or without previous related credentials who wish to obtain an advanced or initial credential in gerontology.

Our Advanced 3D Animation program is designed to provide you with comprehensive 3D animation skills so that you are prepared and confident to enter production-ready roles upon graduation. Shaped for students with an established background in art, this program prepares students for a rewarding career through expert-taught courses, interactions with and feedback from industry representatives, and a program curriculum crafted to develop artists into skilled and specialized professionals ready to launch their own journey into digital production.

Leveraging the strength of the curriculum and new facilities in the heart of Vancouver's animation district at the Centre of Entertainment Arts, the Continuing Studies Diploma in Advanced 3D Animation supports students through a two-year, full-time program that offers a comprehensive coverage of core practical and artistic skills. In addition to training students for a career after graduation, the program enables students to hone their strengths and shape a specialized professional focus.

Marketing Management is a dynamic field with variety of employment opportunities. Organizations large or small, established or newly-formed require marketing professionals to succeed. Langara graduates have a solid foundation in general marketing, sales, advertising, distribution, e-commerce, and marketing research. As well, they choose from specialized courses in special events marketing, consumer behaviour, customer relationship marketing, retail marketing and public relations. As with all our programs, the curriculum is rounded out with courses in Communications, Math, Economics and general education electives.

It combines practical hands-on course work with a good foundation in theoretical marketing and general business concepts including courses in Accounting, Marketing Communications Design, Research Methods in Business, Advertising, Selling Skills, Integrated Marketing Communications, Organizational Behaviour, Business Presentation Skills, Law, and courses such as Economics, English, Communications, and Mathematics of Business.

Graduates of this program who meet the minimum academic entrance requirements will be able to ladder into the third year of the Bachelor of Business Administration Program.

The Diploma in Marketing Management is designed so that students can choose to change their focus of studies within the first year and transfer into the Business Management Program.

Students interested in Marketing Management should apply to the BBA program through the School of Management and then select Marketing Management as their concentration.

This is an intensive program designed for students with an undegraduate degree or equivalent. Applied Planning students share a passion and motivation to contribute to better and more liveable communities and a more sustainable future. The Applied Planning program builds applied planning skills for people who wish to work in the field of planning. Courses emphasize team based learning and introduce students to case studies, practical projects and a range of skills necessary for the practicing planner. Graduates of this program find work with planning organizations including local and regional government, consulting firms and first nations. Students in the program require 15 courses to graduate from our 12 month program with a Post Degree Diploma in Applied Planning. There is an optional work term which includes two additional courses. Part time students may be accepted into the program, space permitting. Most Applied Planning courses are scheduled in the evenings to enable students to work in addition to pursuing their studies.

The Internet and Web Technology Certificate Program is designed for individuals who want to enter the information technology (IT) field. The program emphasizes Web development and computing and provides a solid foundation for the technical side of e-business. The program prepares students for meeting the challenges of Web technology by providing them life-long opportunities for academic and career advancement through one year of exclusive education. It trains students through a variety of courses including introduction to computer science, Web development and programming, multimedia and animations, operating systems, and databases.

The Library & Information Technology Program has maintained its currency and competitiveness amid rapid technological advancement. Our graduates are highly skilled in today’s essential computer applications as well as specialized library management systems. We teach students important skills for developing search strategies for library databases and open resources on the internet. Students also learn how to catalogue, maintain, and retrieve print, digital and non-print resources as well as specialized media including film, maps and photographs.

Our students have the opportunities to practice what they have learned by completing two practicum placements in the community during their studies. Our graduates are successfully employed in public, academic, or special libraries such as medical, law, corporate and governmental institutions. Library technicians hold supervisory positions or work cooperatively with librarians and other professionals to manage information resources, from helping people retrieve information and materials, to records management for technology-based businesses.

Students come to the program from various socio-cultural and age groups. They carry with them various forms of educational achievements and professional backgrounds, which gather together as they meet many challenges put forth by their instructors and fellow students.
