They work within the justice system – focusing on keeping people out of it through prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. Help build stronger, safer communities by helping people at risk gain the skills and support they need to make positive life choices.

Experiential learning
Our program adapts to emerging policies and best practices to prepare students for the workplace — with practical, hands-on learning:

• Sharpen your assessment and communication skills during scenario-based role-plays, emphasizing personal safety and the protection of staff, clients and the community.
• Visit adult and youth detention facilities and earn a certificate in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. 
• Hear from guest speakers who share their real-life experiences with post-traumatic stress, suicide interventions and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, as well as professionals working in group homes, federal and provincial corrections and sexual assault centres.
• Help clients across the spectrum of the justice system with a three-fold focus on prevention, intervention and reintegration.

As our dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers. Electrical Engineering Techniques students are introduced to electrical principles and building construction wiring while technician students advance into industrial automation and PLC programming, preparing for tomorrow's trends in next-generation robotics.

Experiential learning
Get practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors:

• The first year provides a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.
• Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control and the basics of industrial processes — including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fluid power and process control.
• Hands-on work with actual PLCs in your first year, not just simulation software.
• Students gain a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• A second year of study delivers skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems.
•  Students can apply their knowledge to extracurricular projects, such as building a racecar simulator arcade game using only automation equipment and software.

Social Service Workers help individuals and families deal with broad and complex issues such as poverty, access to needed social supports, reduction of oppression and social prejudice, educational challenges, mental health, addictions, abuse, illness and loss. This program will prepare you for the rewards and challenges of supporting people as they change and grow.

Experiential learning

• Incorporate theory and practice with extensive group work.
• Develop essential skills in human relations, interpersonal communication, needs assessment and critical thinking.
• Practise interviewing and counselling skills in a soundproof lab with a two-way mirror for observation and feedback.
• As well as faculty instruction, the opportunity to learn from guest speakers working in probation and parole, crisis shelters, seniors' facilities, Ontario Works and other community agencies.
• Rate your strengths and areas of greater focus with ongoing self-assessment.

This program delivers concrete, marketable skills with a dual focus on financial and management accounting:

• Develop managerial skills in budgeting, product costing and price setting, eliminating financial waste and finding operating efficiencies.
• Access opportunities to gain certification in industry-leading software such as MS Excel, Sage 50 Accounting and QuickBooks.
• A third year of study provides advanced knowledge of financial and management accounting, corporate taxation and audit techniques, focused on obtaining the ACAF certification.
• Collaborate and formulate strategy in simulated business competitions.
• Learn from case studies and guest speakers from the local business community.
• Put your skills to work in Loyalist’s student-run tax clinic. For the 2016 tax year, students completed more than 200 returns — putting more than $245,000 back in the hands of Loyalist students.
• In year three, put your skills to work in our Money Matters clinic and gain customer service experience assisting students with budgeting and financial matters.
• A four-week field placement in third year provides valuable industry experience and networking, and the opportunity to graduate into a job.

Customs compliance and border security have emerged as areas of national focus in public safety and global trade. Train for a career in this dynamic segment of the Canadian economy. Learn with leaders in virtual learning environments – Loyalist’s border simulations have been used by the Canada Border Services Agency to train new recruits.

• Experience the role of a border services officer in a virtual learning environment, completing the inspection procedure and questioning unknown travellers as you would in real life.
• Practise searching for and identifying contraband during forensic vehicle searches.
• Develop your proficiency in computer applications used in public and private customs-related industry

This hands-on introduction to residential design includes consideration of the environment, building codes and residential building design practices. It delivers marketable skills in under a year of study and prepares students for further study in the Architectural Technician/Technology program.

Bring your design ideas to life in this hands-on program:

• Get a practical blend of classroom instruction and hands-on studio experience.
• Design a small building by creatively addressing the use of space, materials, code requirements and the environment.
• Showcase creativity and analytical skills to create a design, and then bring your concepts to life with a 3D models.
• In less than a year, you will develop marketable skills and knowledge in construction drawings, residential building codes, computer drafting (AutoCAD and SketchUp), construction materials and methods, and presenting your designs.

Learn hands on in Loyalist’s newly equipped The Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Create projects on the latest CNC lathes, milling machines and 3D printing equipment.
• Use state-of-the-art Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control electromechanical systems.
• Create pneumatic and hydraulic circuits based on common industrial processes.
• Use welding processes to create projects.
• Design components using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and CAD/CAM.
• Gain a deep understanding of machine and tool design, numerical control programming and statistical quality control.

Our busy days are often highly scheduled, making it essential that quality wellness and recreation services are available within our community. Recreation and sports professionals help build healthy communities and develop programs for individuals of all ages.

Experiential Learning
This hands-on program produces recreation and sport professionals with the skills and knowledge to help people of all ages and abilities combine wellness and physical activity in their daily lives:

• Engage in outdoor recreation activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, slacklining and skiing.
• Work directly with children and youth with a variety of exceptionalities and abilities within an adaptive recreation setting.  
• Prepare for self-employment through an independent research project in the final semester. Design an original program or business that can be showcased to employers and investors upon graduation.
• Pursue opportunities to complete aquatic and outdoor recreation qualifications.
• Gain important public relations, marketing, financial, and research and proposal writing skills.
• Hear from industry professional guest speakers in recreation and outdoor education.
• Gain 320 hours of on-the-job experience in two field placements within a variety of settings: municipal health and wellness centres, military recreation, resort destinations, outdoor education centres, retirement and therapeutic recreation facilities, and international programs

• Understand the principles and techniques of organic and analytical chemistry, chemical engineering and industrial processes.
• Gain applied skills with chemical instrumentation, extraction technology, health and safety, and microbiology techniques.
• Apply theory to practice with problem-based assignments.
• Graduates are prepared to work in research and development, analyze and interpret data, manage lab operations, assess analytical methods and develop new techniques.
• Observe chemical engineers in action with tours of professional lab facilities.
• Applied project learning and field placements in the second and third years provide practical experience, preparing you for a smooth transition to the workforce with a wide range of skills.
