The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Techniques and Technician programs provide students with a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and experiential learning to enable its graduates to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. With multiple pathways to follow and a variety of career options to choose from, Loyalist's HRAC programs are designed to prepare its graduates to operate in an environment dominated by climate change, rising fuel costs, and sustainable choices.

Experiential learning
In the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) Techniques program students will:

• Gain solid skills and knowledge in the design, operation and maintenance of energy-efficient, building environmental systems, in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
• Learn to size, install, repair and maintain building environmental systems for the residential and light commercial sector.
• Develop practical skills through hands-on experience in Loyalist's labs, working on a wide range of furnaces, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and other appliances, including the latest sustainable heating and cooling technology.
• Develop cross-disciplinary, industry-ready skills in soldering, wiring and electrical control circuitry and troubleshooting for HVAC and gas installations.
• Use computer-aided design software to assess building heating and cooling requirements, select appropriate equipment, review HVAC system drawings and specifications for the residential market and light commercial market and confirm building code requirements.

Community and justice services professionals often work with clients who find themselves at a crossroads. They work within the justice system – focusing on keeping people out of it through prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. Help build stronger, safer communities by helping people at risk gain the skills and support they need to make positive life choices.

Our program adapts to emerging policies and best practices to prepare students for the workplace — with practical, hands-on learning:

• Sharpen your assessment and communication skills during scenario-based role-plays, emphasizing personal safety and the protection of staff, clients and the community.
• Visit adult and youth detention facilities and earn a certificate in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. 
• Hear from guest speakers who share their real-life experiences with post-traumatic stress, suicide interventions and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, as well as professionals working in group homes, federal and provincial corrections and sexual assault centres.
• Help clients across the spectrum of the justice system with a three-fold focus on prevention, intervention and reintegration.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The precision work of welders and fabricators holds up bridges and delivers miners safely underground. Gain skills in welding, fabrication, detailing and millwrighting that you can use across the country, from coast to coast, in virtually any industry.

Experiential learning
Prepare to meet increasingly complex industry standards through hands-on learning in Loyalist’s newly equipped The Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Follow projects from the engineering drawings stage, through cutting and forming processes, to the completion of the job and quality inspection.
• Create with new and evolving technologies such as CNC press brakes, CNC plasma cutting and 3D designing.
• Practise welding techniques such as gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
• Participate in the Ontario Skills Competition and field trips to the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show.
• Expand your theoretical and practical skill set, along with in-depth trade practices and job planning skills, in the two-year diploma program.

Spas and salons are increasingly popular destinations for people wanting to reduce stress and feel younger. Train in a full range of spa services to help people look and feel their best. Then, put those skills to work, both in our on-campus, student-run day spa and during two field placements.

Experiential learning
In this hands-on program, students operate The Spa at Loyalist, a busy wellness retreat and retail boutique delivering full esthetic services in a supervised environment:

• Train in a full range of spa services in a safe learning environment, including manicures, pedicures, facials, hair removal, make-up artistry, aromatherapy and hot stone massage.
• Get the highest technical skills in Loyalist’s lab using the latest in skincare technology, including microdermabrasion and facial machinery.
• Work with new state-of-the-art medical spa equipment, including the Sonicator 740, an anti-aging skincare system that applies ultrasound technology, and the IPL Angelite, an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) machine used for photo facials and permanent hair reduction.
• Deliver high-end customer service as you interact with clients.
• Develop important skills in front desk management and the latest point-of-sale software.
• Learn the business side of spa management with instruction in visual display, retail sales, marketing, personal finance, business communications and entrepreneurship.
• Create a business plan including a spa design layout and creative spa menu showcasing a variety of skills learned in the program.
• Earn 180 hours of clinic time in our state-of-the-art, full-service spa.
• Network and showcase your skills to industry, with two field placements.
• Learn from reputed guest-speaker educators.
• Participate in community outreach events to support local women and children.
• Be proficient and fast with skills by practicing skills throughout the two years.

This program will prepare students with the in-demand knowledge and skills required to design and build data-driven systems for decision making in the private or public sectors upon graduation. Students will learn about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science through training in predictive, descriptive, and prescriptive analytics. Graduates will be equipped with relevant skills that can be applied to a range of industries, which increasingly use these cutting-edge technologies.

•  Develop the skills required to collect, manipulate and mine data sets
•  Analyze, design, and implement AI systems through the application of systematic approaches and methodologies to meet organizational needs
•  Recommend different systems architectures and data storage technologies to support data analytics
•  Design and apply data models that meet the needs of a specific operational/business process
•  Develop software applications to manipulate data sets, correlate information and produce reports
•  Design and present data visualizations to communicate information, analysis, reports, and make recommendations in a variety of formats for various audiences and stakeholders as required to meet operational/business or project objectives
•  Apply data analytics, business intelligence tools and research to support evidence-based decision making
•  Identify and assess data analytics business strategies and workflows to respond to new opportunities or provide project solutions
•  Implement data solutions in compliance with corporate policies, ethical standards, and industry regulations
•  Develop AI models and agents that use enterprise data to identify patterns, provide insights, recommend actions or perform tasks autonomously on behalf of stakeholders

As our dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers. Electrical Engineering Techniques students are introduced to electrical principles and building construction wiring while technician students advance into industrial automation and PLC programming, preparing for tomorrow's trends in next generation robotics.

Get practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors:

• The first year provides a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.
• Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control and the basics of industrial processes — including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fluid power and process control.
• Hands-on work with actual PLCs in your first year, not just simulation software.
• Students gain a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• A second year of study delivers skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems.
•  Students can apply their knowledge to extracurricular projects, such as building a racecar simulator arcade game using only automation equipment and software.

There has been such rapid growth in the fields of public and private safety that industry training can’t keep up with the demand for qualified professionals. Extensive hands-on training will prepare you for a wide range of careers in security, enforcement, investigations, inspection, risk assessment and emergency planning.

Protection, security and investigation (PSI) is all about being prepared – learning how to deal with any situation and then practising these scenarios so you’re ready to face them in the real world:

• Two four-week on-the-job placements, which can be completed locally or from coast to coast. The program coordinator organizes placements.
• Receive hands-on training in surveillance, arrest and restraint techniques, managing conflict, emergency planning and incident response to serious situations.
• Conduct your own crime scene investigation, gathering evidence, conducting interviews, taking statements, and sharpening your skills in critical thinking and problem solving.
• Prepare to secure the job you want with panel interviews, résumé writing, portfolio development and justice job testing.
• Participate in field trips that allow you to network with industry professionals and leaders as well as gain experience with the latest security technology on the market.

There are career-building opportunities in this skilled trade for people who enjoy working with their hands and take pride in a job well done. Loyalist students practise green and sustainable building methods as they work through a major carpentry or renovation project.

Experiential learning
Learning emphasizes practical hands-on work during a major carpentry, new construction or renovation building project:

• Practise your skills in carpentry and construction including, rough carpentry/framing, finish carpentry, base footings, insulation, vapour and air barriers, drywalling, window and door installation, interior and exterior finishes, fine finishing techniques, and roofing.
• Study building codes, work from blueprints, produce basic sketches, develop building details and create computer-assisted drawings using AutoCAD and SketchUp.
• Receive hands-on instruction in environmentally sound construction techniques, proper tool usage and jobsite safety.
• Second-year students develop advanced techniques in sustainable and alternative building, sustainable construction, green build and healthy homes, i.e., low VOC (volatile organic compounds), electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.  
• Obtain industry-required certificates such as Working at Heights and First Aid.
