Learn hands on in Loyalist’s newly equipped The Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Create projects on the latest CNC lathes, milling machines and 3D printing equipment.
• Use state-of-the-art Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control electromechanical systems.
• Create pneumatic and hydraulic circuits based on common industrial processes.
• Use welding processes to create projects.
• Design components using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and CAD/CAM.
• Gain a deep understanding of machine and tool design, numerical control programming and statistical quality control.

Loyalist College offers the only specialized program for survey technicians in Ontario. Using instruments and computer software, survey engineering technicians conduct field measurements and analyze data to determine the precise locations of natural features, structures and property boundaries. Survey technicians are in demand in many industries, including construction, land development, government agencies, and mining and natural resource exploration.

Experiential learning
Learning combines classroom instruction with computer lab and practical field exercises:

• Gain extensive hands-on experience using current satellite positioning equipment (GPS), total stations and data collectors during practical survey projects in small groups.
• Using current versions of industry software including MicroSurvey, AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D, create a registered plan of a subdivision and engineering drawings for land development applications and highway design according to provincial and municipal standards.
• Graduates are eligible for certification with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

This program will prepare students with the in-demand knowledge and skills required to design and build data-driven systems for decision making in the private or public sectors upon graduation. Students will learn about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science through training in predictive, descriptive, and prescriptive analytics. Graduates will be equipped with relevant skills that can be applied to a range of industries, which increasingly use these cutting-edge technologies.

With this hands-on program, gain the knowledge and skills needed to support an organization’s AI and Data needs:

•  Develop the skills required to collect, manipulate and mine data sets
•  Analyze, design, and implement AI systems through the application of systematic approaches and methodologies to meet organizational needs
•  Recommend different systems architectures and data storage technologies to support data analytics
•  Design and apply data models that meet the needs of a specific operational/business process
•  Develop software applications to manipulate data sets, correlate information and produce reports
•  Design and present data visualizations to communicate information, analysis, reports, and make recommendations in a variety of formats for various audiences and stakeholders as required to meet operational/business or project objectives
•  Apply data analytics, business intelligence tools and research to support evidence-based decision making

As a Developmental Services Worker (DSW), you will assist people with disabilities to live as valued, contributing members of the community. By providing support and advocacy, you will work towards full inclusion for the betterment of the entire community. The program curriculum promotes individualized and inclusive approaches, reflective of innovative practices in the field.

Experiential learning
Learn to effectively support people with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and people with a dual diagnosis:

• Develop hands-on skills that will help people grow, develop relationships, and actively participate in their community.
• Identify and connect people to community opportunities and resources.
• Collaborate with people with disabilities to overcome barriers and promote full inclusion.

Apply theory in a real-world setting with three faculty-supervised field placements:

• Begin with four weeks in the second semester and increase to seven weeks, and then 12 weeks in the final semester.
• Work on-the-job three to four days per week, and bring those experiences back to the classroom to enhance your learning.
• Students have completed placements in residential programs such as Community Living and Pathways to Independence; public and private schools; adult education programs; and organizations in their home communities.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Techniques and Technician programs provide students with a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and experiential learning to enable its graduates to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. With multiple pathways to follow and a variety of career options to choose from, Loyalist's HRAC programs are designed to prepare its graduates to operate in an environment dominated by climate change, rising fuel costs, and sustainable choices.

Experiential learning
In the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) Techniques program students will:

• Gain solid skills and knowledge in the design, operation and maintenance of energy-efficient, building environmental systems, in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
• Learn to size, install, repair and maintain building environmental systems for the residential and light commercial sector.
• Develop practical skills through hands-on experience in Loyalist's labs, working on a wide range of furnaces, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and other appliances, including the latest sustainable heating and cooling technology.
• Develop cross-disciplinary, industry-ready skills in soldering, wiring and electrical control circuitry and troubleshooting for HVAC and gas installations.
• Use computer-aided design software to assess building heating and cooling requirements, select appropriate equipment, review HVAC system drawings and specifications for the residential market and light commercial market and confirm building code requirements.

Public relations and event management professionals are increasingly in demand as employers recognize the value of effective communications. A career in PR and event management is never dull! From one day to the next you could be pitching a story, staging a news conference, organizing an event or managing crisis communications.

Students enjoy a combination of project-based learning and hands-on experience that goes beyond the classroom. In this intensive, eight-month program you will:

• Learn from guest speakers in the industry.
• Develop a solid portfolio of relevant workplace skills.
• Participate in a speed-mentoring event and micro-networking session.
• Meet with industry professionals and PR agencies in Toronto.
• Stage a mock disaster during Crisis Communications Week.
• Plan and host special events such as concerts and wine tastings in neighbouring Prince Edward County.
• Write clear, targeted communications materials that deliver your message persuasively.
• Build relationships with media and stakeholders, plan special events, market for corporate and non-profit, deliver compelling presentations, prepare for media interviews and handle crisis situations.

Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) are in demand in virtually every field, including public accounting, industry, arts and entertainment, as well as not-for-profit sectors. Develop the technical foundations in financial and managerial accounting, taxation, and more that you need for a successful career as a professional accountant. In the Ontario Tech University BCOM Stream program, you can earn a diploma and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in just four years.

Earn five Ontario Tech University BCOM credits during your two-year diploma studies at Loyalist and gain direct entry to third-year degree studies in the Ontario Tech University Faculty of Business and Information Technology.

• Build on your studies at Loyalist with further study at Ontario Tech University in advanced auditing, information systems, financial and managerial accounting, taxation, and financial statement analysis.
• Eligible students can apply to the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting major, which is aligned with CPA Ontario for entry into the CPA Professional Education Program.

• This program delivers concrete, marketable skills with a dual focus on financial and management accounting. Develop managerial skills in budgeting, product costing and price setting, eliminating financial waste, and finding operating efficiencies.
• Develop solid skills in industry-leading software such as MS Excel, Sage 50, and EFILE.
• Collaborate and formulate strategy in simulated business competitions.
• Learn from case studies and guest speakers from the local business community.
• Put your skills to work in Loyalist’s student-run tax clinic. For the 2016 tax year, students completed more than 200 returns — putting more than $245,000 back in the hands of Loyalist students.

Build on your knowledge and experience in the health care and social service fields with a two-semester post-graduate certificate. Gain the skills and attitudes necessary to provide a range of support to help clients, specifically the aged and the terminally ill and their families, live as independently as possible through the provision of compassionate care where quality of life is the primary objective and symptom control is the basis for care.

Experiential Learning
Through hands-on learning and an interprofessional health care team approach, gain the skills required to provide supportive care to clients who are experiencing physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges:

• Explore strategies for developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with aged and palliative patients, thereby fostering their dignity, self-worth and independence.
• Learn how to effectively communicate with aging and palliative patients as well as with health care team members.
• Study how individuals cope with pain as well as appropriate measures for providing comfort and pain management to the terminally ill and their families within your scope of practice.
• Become familiar with ethical, legal and spiritual considerations with regard to the care of vulnerable populations, and develop an understanding of individual and multicultural approaches to aging, death, dying and grieving.
• Apply theory and concepts as related to caring for vulnerable populations and palliative patients through a combination of a clinical practicum and immersive simulation.

Biotechnology plays a critical role in the battles against hunger, disease, and pollution. It is used in developing precision medicines and gene therapies, environmental decontamination to restore polluted spaces, and engineering crops to improve their yield and nutrition.

• Hands-on learning combines classroom theory and practical, lab-based instruction.
• Work in state-of-the-art Instrumentation and Molecular Biology labs equipped with PCR and DNA sequencing technology.
• Get experience with a wide variety of instrumentation used in genetics, microbiology, fermentation and forensics.
• Get on-the-job, practical experience with field placements in the second and third year.
