Experiential Learning
Through hands-on learning and an interprofessional health care team approach, gain the skills required to provide supportive care to clients who are experiencing physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges:

• Explore strategies for developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with aged and palliative patients, thereby fostering their dignity, self-worth and independence.
• Learn how to effectively communicate with aging and palliative patients as well as with health care team members.
• Study how individuals cope with pain as well as appropriate measures for providing comfort and pain management to the terminally ill and their families within your scope of practice.
• Become familiar with ethical, legal and spiritual considerations with regard to the care of vulnerable populations, and develop an understanding of individual and multicultural approaches to aging, death, dying and grieving.
• Apply theory and concepts as related to caring for vulnerable populations and palliative patients through a combination of a clinical practicum and immersive simulation.

Prepare to meet increasingly complex industry standards through hands-on learning in Loyalist’s newly equipped The Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Follow projects from the engineering drawings stage, through cutting and forming processes, to the completion of the job and quality inspection.
• Create with new and evolving technologies such as CNC press brakes, CNC plasma cutting and 3D designing.
• Practise welding techniques such as gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
• Participate in the Ontario Skills Competition and field trips to the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show.
• Expand your theoretical and practical skill set, along with in-depth trade practices and job planning skills, in the two-year diploma program.

As a Developmental Services Worker (DSW), you will assist people with disabilities to live as valued, contributing members of the community. By providing support and advocacy, you will work towards full inclusion for the betterment of the entire community. The program curriculum promotes individualized and inclusive approaches, reflective of innovative practices in the field.

Experiential learning
Learn to effectively support people with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and people with a dual diagnosis:

• Develop hands-on skills that will help people grow, develop relationships, and actively participate in their community.
• Identify and connect people to community opportunities and resources.
• Collaborate with people with disabilities to overcome barriers and promote full inclusion.

Apply theory in a real-world setting with three faculty-supervised field placements:

• Begin with four weeks in the second semester and increase to seven weeks, and then 12 weeks in the final semester.
• Work on-the-job three to four days per week, and bring those experiences back to the classroom to enhance your learning.
• Students have completed placements in residential programs such as Community Living and Pathways to Independence; public and private schools; adult education programs; and organizations in their home communities.

Police officers make our communities a better place. They do this by preventing crime, enforcing laws and improving the quality of life for all. Loyalist's program prepares you to be a great candidate for police services. To help you get started and make connections, Loyalist Police Foundations provides eligible students with experience, observing police officers in action, at their side.

Experiential learning

• Gain valuable field or field-related experience in two separate placements.
• Practise interpreting and applying the law from class to courtroom.
• Participate in a mock trial in a real courtroom with real judges.
• Role-play different scenarios using uniforms and police training equipment.
• Volunteer with police services in roles which have included emergency response training, front line officer training, mock disaster participation, and community policing activities.

Customs compliance and border security have emerged as areas of national focus in public safety and global trade. Train for a career in this dynamic segment of the Canadian economy. Learn with leaders in virtual learning environments – Loyalist’s border simulations have been used by the Canada Border Services Agency to train new recruits.

A horticultural technician works with plants and has knowledge and skills in ornamental horticulture and plant health care. Using tools and machinery, this person installs, grows and maintains indoor and outdoor plants; builds urban and rural landscapes; maintains outdoor properties; cares for turf grass and golf courses; and installs and maintains irrigation systems. The fundamentals of grounds keeping, including safe snow and ice removal, as well as sustainable agriculture practices and green technologies are also introduced.

Biotechnology plays a critical role in the battles against hunger, disease, and pollution. It is used in developing precision medicines and gene therapies, environmental decontamination to restore polluted spaces, and engineering crops to improve their yield and nutrition.

Experiential learning
Study in the newly equipped Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Hands-on learning combines classroom theory and practical, lab-based instruction.
• Work in state-of-the-art Instrumentation and Molecular Biology labs equipped with PCR and DNA sequencing technology.
• Get experience with a wide variety of instrumentation used in genetics, microbiology, fermentation and forensics.
• Get on-the-job, practical experience with field placements in the second and third year.

Expand your knowledge in Biotechnology – Advanced:

• The third year focuses on intensive, laboratory-based instruction and project-based learning in molecular biology, microbiology, analytical instrumentation, tissue culture and cutting-edge extraction technologies.

This program delivers concrete, marketable skills with a dual focus on financial and management accounting:

• Develop managerial skills in budgeting, product costing and price setting, eliminating financial waste and finding operating efficiencies.
• Access opportunities to gain certification in industry-leading software such as MS Excel, Sage 50 Accounting and QuickBooks.
• A third year of study provides advanced knowledge of financial and management accounting, corporate taxation and audit techniques, focused on obtaining the ACAF certification.
• Collaborate and formulate strategy in simulated business competitions.
• Learn from case studies and guest speakers from the local business community.
• Put your skills to work in Loyalist’s student-run tax clinic. For the 2016 tax year, students completed more than 200 returns — putting more than $245,000 back in the hands of Loyalist students.
• In year three, put your skills to work in our Money Matters clinic and gain customer service experience assisting students with budgeting and financial matters.
• A four-week field placement in third year provides valuable industry experience and networking, and the opportunity to graduate into a job.
