Experiential Learning

• Participate in engaging and relevant learning experiences that prepare you for the child and youth care field. Develop the required knowledge, a rich skill set and a strong sense of self through learning in both classroom and practicum settings.
• Caring faculty guide learners in developing relational skills and a deep understanding of the wide variety of issues that young people face today.
• Explore the impact of mental health issues, trauma and loss, abuse, violence and poverty on children, youth and families and learn how to provide inclusive, non-judgmental support to a diverse group.
• Loyalist graduates are eligible for professional certification with the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care.
• Experts from the field share their expertise about a variety of topics such as restorative practices, youth engagement, lived experience with mental health issues, trauma-informed practice, and supporting children, youth and families in various cultural communities.
• Students have completed placements in elementary and secondary schools, Bayfield Treatment Centres, Quinte Children’s Homes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Quinte West Youth Centre and Canadian Mental Health Association, among other organizations.
• During their time in the program, students can earn industry-valued certifications to add to their professional portfolios, including Triple P Parenting, Safe Talk and DLE (Daily Life Events).

Many people are overwhelmed by the justice system and the cost of legal representation. Paralegals help their clients navigate through the process and answer key questions. Licensed paralegals can also represent their clients in court. The Law Society of Ontario accredits this program.

Experiential learning
Students prepare for the full scope of practice of a licensed paralegal in Ontario through a blend of classroom instruction and practical experience that includes:

• Training in substantive law and legal procedures.
• An emphasis on ethical conduct and professional responsibilities.
• Preparing and presenting a case in court before a local judge during a moot trial in the Ontario Court of Justice or the Superior Court of Justice where each student is assigned the role of a legal representative.

Apply your learning on the job during a field placement in your second year. Loyalist students have completed placements with:

• Provincial Offences Prosecutor’s office
• Federal Department of Justice
• Private law firms
• Paralegal firms
• Community legal clinics
• Government legal departments
• Crown Attorneys’ offices (criminal)

The field of electromechanical engineering and mechatronics reflects the integration of four areas in engineering: mechanical, electrical, electronics, and automation. Graduates of the Electromechanical Engineering Technician - Mechatronics program will have the skills and knowledge to enter the workforce in a wide variety of industrial environments and advanced manufacturing facilities, and may be involved with the design, implementation, maintenance and repair of robotic equipment and automation systems.

Experiential learning
Learn through practical training and hands-on learning experiences:

• Interpret and produce electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings and other related technical documents and graphics for a variety of stakeholders in compliance with industry standards
• Fabricate and build electrical, electronic, and mechanical components and assemblies in accordance with operating standards, job requirements, and specifications
• Select and use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and equipment to assess, maintain, and repair electromechanical circuits, equipment, processes, systems, and subsystems
• Maintain and repair electrical, electronic, and mechanical components, equipment, and systems to
• Support the design and production of mechanical components by assisting in the specification of manufacturing materials and processes
• Apply, analyze, build, install, commission, and troubleshoot a variety of mechanical, electrical, and electronic control systems, logic and digital circuits, passive AC and DC circuits, and active circuits
• Install and troubleshoot basic computer hardware and programming to support the electromechanical engineering environment
• Maintain and troubleshoot automated equipment including robotic systems
• Establish and maintain inventory, records, and documentation systems to meet organizational and industry standards and requirements

Before products hit the shelves, there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes — from purchasing materials and coordinating inventory to the distribution of finished goods. As global trade widens and deepens, demand continues to rise for skilled workers in the areas of supply chain logistics and international trade compliance.

Prepare hands-on for a career in supply chain management concentrating on trade compliance and logistics planning:

• Gain a depth of knowledge in customs, including compliance, risk management and the global movement of goods.
• Navigate international customs and business practices.
• Get applied knowledge of project management including planning and reporting, scheduling techniques, element interdependencies, and project costing and crashing.
• Explore consultative selling and marketing intelligence.
• Learn first hand during local field trips and presentations by guest speakers.
• Gain critical workplace experience with a four-week field placement.

Firefighters are on the front line of emergency response and are an integral part of any community, contributing to public safety, fire awareness and education. Learn the skills and knowledge to prepare you for success in the fast-paced and rewarding field of firefighting with this program, which conforms to the requirements for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001.

Experiential Learning
This hands-on program is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively as part of a fire service team and with other emergency responders to provide comprehensive service in emergency and non-emergency situations:

• Practise and test your skills in simulated and controlled live fire training situations.
• Learn about fire suppression, community education and fire prevention, firefighter emergency patient care, property conservation, environmental protection, confined space and environmental hazards, and rescue operations.
• Acquire the appropriate fire service terminology required to effectively communicate in a range of situations, and develop skills to communicate professionally with diverse communities and their members.
• Explore operating procedures, and acquire the skills to confidently use fire department communications equipment, personal protective clothing and protective equipment.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to undertake the OFM provincial firefighters test and upon successful completion of this test can apply for standing under NFPA 1001 as Firefighter Level I and II from the Proboard.

As our dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers. Electrical Engineering Techniques students are introduced to electrical principles and building construction wiring while technician students advance into industrial automation and PLC programming, preparing for tomorrow's trends in next generation robotics.

Get practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors:

• The first year provides a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.
• Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control and the basics of industrial processes — including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fluid power and process control.
• Hands-on work with actual PLCs in your first year, not just simulation software.
• Students gain a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• A second year of study delivers skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems.
•  Students can apply their knowledge to extracurricular projects, such as building a racecar simulator arcade game using only automation equipment and software.

Loyalist grads meet the academic requirements to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE) and apply for the CHRP designation.

• Interaction with faculty and other post-grad students coming from university, college and workplace backgrounds helps prepare students to appreciate different perspectives.
• Students earn field experience one day a week throughout the semester where they apply theoretical and practical knowledge in a workplace setting and make valuable industry contacts

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The precision work of welders and fabricators holds up bridges and delivers miners safely underground. Gain skills in welding, fabrication, detailing and millwrighting that you can use across the country, from coast to coast, in virtually any industry.

Experiential learning
Prepare to meet increasingly complex industry standards through hands-on learning in Loyalist’s newly equipped The Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Follow projects from the engineering drawings stage, through cutting and forming processes, to the completion of the job and quality inspection.
• Create with new and evolving technologies such as CNC press brakes, CNC plasma cutting and 3D designing.
• Practise welding techniques such as gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
• Participate in the Ontario Skills Competition and field trips to the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show.
• Expand your theoretical and practical skill set, along with in-depth trade practices and job planning skills, in the two-year diploma program.

A horticultural technician works with plants and has knowledge and skills in ornamental horticulture and plant health care. Using tools and machinery, this person installs, grows and maintains indoor and outdoor plants; builds urban and rural landscapes; maintains outdoor properties; cares for turf grass and golf courses; and installs and maintains irrigation systems. The fundamentals of grounds keeping, including safe snow and ice removal, as well as sustainable agriculture practices and green technologies are also introduced.
