Experiential learning
Protection, security and investigation (PSI) is all about being prepared – learning how to deal with any situation and then practising these scenarios so you’re ready to face them in the real world:

• Two four-week on-the-job placements, which can be completed locally or from coast to coast. The program coordinator organizes placements.
• Receive hands-on training in surveillance, arrest and restraint techniques, managing conflict, emergency planning and incident response to serious situations.
• Conduct your own crime scene investigation, gathering evidence, conducting interviews, taking statements, and sharpening your skills in critical thinking and problem solving.
• Prepare to secure the job you want with panel interviews, résumé writing, portfolio development and justice job testing.
• Participate in field trips that allow you to network with industry professionals and leaders as well as gain experience with the latest security technology on the market.

• Work in the kitchen and dining room of Resto 213, Loyalist’s on-campus student-run gourmet restaurant.
• Students participate in The Art of Flavour dinners throughout the year, which provides exposure to different styles of cuisine and winemaking, as well as potential job connections. 
• Earn first-hand experience in all aspects of culinary management — from hosting and service, food preparation, pricing and menu design, to developing marketing strategies.
• Students also prepare food for the Loyalist Market, a retail outlet offering an amazing variety of fresh and frozen products designed and created by Culinary students.
• Optional field trips provide invaluable experience in food and culture. Recent destinations include New York City, Paris, Switzerland and Portugal.
• Receive individual attention from licensed chefs and Red Seal pastry chefs.

• Hands-on shop work includes welding, machining and maintenance procedures.
• Use the latest in laser alignment technology.
• Explore design using AutoCAD and the interpretation of engineering drawings.
• Earn experience diagnosing and troubleshooting.
• Use leading-edge simulation software to design and demonstrate hydraulic circuits and electrical circuits.
• The positive learning environment includes well-lit, roomy labs with brand new lathes and milling machines.
• You could apprentice as an industrial mechanic (millwright), machinist, metal fabricator, welder or electrician among other trades.
• Loyalist’s program uses many of the same curriculum standards as apprenticeship training for industrial mechanics (millwrights).
• Graduates are entitled to write the provincial test for an exemption from Level I of the in-school portion of the Industrial Mechanics apprenticeship.
• Candidates who pass the exam don’t need to leave the workplace to attend school – making them more valuable to employers.
• Graduates may continue into year two of the Manufacturing Engineering Technician program and complete a diploma in one additional year (with bridging courses).

A career in radio can take you from coast to coast. Get hands-on professional training at two College radio stations, and prepare for a variety of exciting opportunities on the air and behind the scenes.

From the first week of classes you’ll get hands-on experience in a live, on-air environment, preparing you for actual broadcast conditions in the industry. In 2014, the CRTC renewed the broadcast licence for CJLX-FM for the maximum seven-year term, until 2021.

• First-year students operate Hot Hits, a radio station that streams online and is equipped with the latest automation system, production equipment and music scheduling software.
• Towards the end of their first year, students are ready to run 91X FM (CJLX-FM 91.3), a licensed, full-power campus-community College radio station serving the local region.
• Get experience in on-air performance, creative writing, audio production, sales, marketing, promotions, programming, and social media and web content development.
• Hear from guest speakers representing commercial radio stations and the music industry.
• Get valuable work experience during a four-week field placement anywhere in the country, with the potential to graduate into a job.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Techniques and Technician programs provide students with a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and experiential learning to enable its graduates to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. With multiple pathways to follow and a variety of career options to choose from, Loyalist's HRAC programs are designed to prepare its graduates to operate in an environment dominated by climate change, rising fuel costs, and sustainable choices.

How You’ll Learn
Experiential learning
In the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) Techniques program students will:

• Gain solid skills and knowledge in the design, operation and maintenance of energy-efficient, building environmental systems, in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
• Learn to size, install, repair and maintain building environmental systems for the residential and light commercial sector.
• Develop practical skills through hands-on experience in Loyalist's labs, working on a wide range of furnaces, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and other appliances, including the latest sustainable heating and cooling technology.
• Develop cross-disciplinary, industry-ready skills in soldering, wiring and electrical control circuitry and troubleshooting for HVAC and gas installations.
• Use computer-aided design software to assess building heating and cooling requirements, select appropriate equipment, review HVAC system drawings and specifications for the residential market and light commercial market and confirm building code requirements.

By integrating science and engineering concepts with industry-specific technologies, civil engineering technicians and technologists assist in the monitoring and inspection of civil infrastructure projects. An education in civil engineering can offer many opportunities – leading to rewarding careers both in the office and out in the field, in areas such as structural design, municipal engineering, transportation construction and geotechnical engineering.

This well-rounded program combines classroom instruction, hands-on learning, both outside (in the field) and inside, in our Building Sciences Lab using industry standard equipment.

• Get a strong foundation in surveying techniques, drafting principles and computer applications, using programs such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Gain skills in structural, municipal and highway design, drafting, materials testing, surveying, inspection, construction supervision and project estimating, to name a few.
• Year one is common with the Construction Engineering Technician program, allowing for ease of transfer.

Social Service Workers help individuals and families deal with broad and complex issues such as poverty, access to needed social supports, reduction of oppression and social prejudice, educational challenges, mental health, addictions, abuse, illness and loss. This program will prepare you for the rewards and challenges of supporting people as they change and grow.

• Understand the principles and techniques of organic and analytical chemistry, chemical engineering and industrial processes.
• Gain applied skills with chemical instrumentation, extraction technology, health and safety, and microbiology techniques.
• Apply theory to practice with problem-based assignments.
• Graduates are prepared to work in research and development, analyze and interpret data, manage lab operations, assess analytical methods and develop new techniques.
• Observe chemical engineers in action with tours of professional lab facilities.
• Applied project learning and field placements in the second and third years provide practical experience, preparing you for a smooth transition to the workforce with a wide range of skills.

The field of electromechanical engineering and mechatronics reflects the integration of four areas in engineering: mechanical, electrical, electronics, and automation. Graduates of the Electromechanical Engineering Technician - Mechatronics program will have the skills and knowledge to enter the workforce in a wide variety of industrial environments and advanced manufacturing facilities, and may be involved with the design, implementation, maintenance and repair of robotic equipment and automation systems.

• Interpret and produce electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings and other related technical documents and graphics for a variety of stakeholders in compliance with industry standards
• Fabricate and build electrical, electronic, and mechanical components and assemblies in accordance with operating standards, job requirements, and specifications
• Select and use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and equipment to assess, maintain, and repair electromechanical circuits, equipment, processes, systems, and subsystems
• Maintain and repair electrical, electronic, and mechanical components, equipment, and systems to
• Support the design and production of mechanical components by assisting in the specification of manufacturing materials and processes
• Apply, analyze, build, install, commission, and troubleshoot a variety of mechanical, electrical, and electronic control systems, logic and digital circuits, passive AC and DC circuits, and active circuits
• Install and troubleshoot basic computer hardware and programming to support the electromechanical engineering environment
• Maintain and troubleshoot automated equipment including robotic systems
• Establish and maintain inventory, records, and documentation systems to meet organizational and industry standards and requirements
• Select electromechanical equipment, components, and systems that fulfill job requirements and functional specifications
