Paralegals act independently to represent clients in provincial offences court for cases involving highway traffic offences, municipal by-law issues, liquor licensing, occupational health and safety, and civil litigation matters presented in small claims court. They also represent clients in the Ontario Court of Justice when charges involve less serious criminal offences, or in tribunal proceedings such as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal, the Human Rights Commission, and the Landlord and Tenant Board. Recently, there has been increasing recognition of the unique needs of people who live with concurrent disorders in the helping professions. Co-occurring substance use and mental health problems present challenges for people in accessing comprehensive support and services. Most promising practices in social and health service agencies include integrated treatment approaches that are based on processes of empowerment that complement a person-centred model of wellness and health. Similarly, stakeholders locally and provincially, have acknowledged the need for employees with an understanding of people who live with concurrent disorders as well as supports, resources, and evidence based approaches.

Elevate your reading, writing, listening and speaking in English to a higher academic level in as little as 7 weeks depending on your skill level. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at Mohawk is a series of 8 levels of 7-week courses designed to develop students’ language skills from pre-beginner to college level English. Each level is 21 hours in length. The continuous intake program accommodates students arriving at different times throughout the year and is also for those who wish only a short-term academic language experience. At the higher levels of EAP, students have the opportunity to earn two post-secondary credits toward their diploma program. This program is intended for learners whose first language is not English and who want to pursue college level programs requiring English language proficiency.
