The Mechanical Technician – Elevating Devices diploma program covers all three levels of in-class apprenticeship curriculum for students who may be looking to complete their apprenticeship. The diploma program focuses primarily on:

• Installation, maintenance and servicing elevating devices
• Regulatory and industry best practices
• Build an understanding of elevating device electrical, mechanical and hydraulics systems
• Graduates of this integrated technician-apprenticeship program are exempt with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, from all three levels of the in-school training portion of the Elevating Devices Mechanic apprenticeship program (636E).  
• Blended theory classes that are face-to-face and on-line.

Develop prevention, intervention and treatment strategies to facilitate a positive change in children, youth and their families who experience a range of social, emotional and behavioural challenges.

Recently, there has been increasing recognition of the unique needs of people who live with concurrent disorders in the helping professions. Co-occurring substance use and mental health problems present challenges for people in accessing comprehensive support and services. Most promising practices in social and health service agencies include integrated treatment approaches that are based on processes of empowerment that complement a person-centred model of wellness and health. Similarly, stakeholders locally and provincially, have acknowledged the need for employees with an understanding of people who live with concurrent disorders as well as supports, resources, and evidence based approaches.

Students in the program will learn about municipal services, roadway design and construction techniques, construction layout, electronic surveying and Global Positioning Systems applications.
Civil Engineering Technician students will experience a very hands-on education consisting of many labs and practical projects over four semesters.

Experiential Learning

• After three semesters, a student will have enough knowledge to do the following (Usually in time for a Winter co-op):
  • Organize, conduct and analyze traffic field studies
  • Prepare a signage and pavement marking plan to local guidelines (e.g. the Ontario Traffic Manual)
  • Research various sources of information. Prepare detailed inventories in the form of maps, charts, graphs and spreadsheets
  • Do analyses of information such as:
    • Capacity of uninterrupted flow facilities
    • Parking activities
    • Public transit operations on a limited basis
    • Produce a simple roadway geometric design task
    • Evaluate transit planning decisions in relation to bus stops and network design
• After four semesters, and experience from the first work term, a student will be able to do more extensive assignments (Usually in time for a Fall co-op):
  • Analysis of information such as:
    • Capacity of interrupted flow facilities using leading industry software (Synchro and PTV Vistro)
    • Design pedestrian and cycling facilities to local guidelines (e.g. The Ontario Traffic Manual and the Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads)
    • Interpret the Ontario Planning Act as related to transportation engineering technology
    • Produce a roadway geometric design in computer-aided drafting software (both AutoCAD and Civil3D)
    • Understand the basics of construction management for a simple project
    • Prepare minor reports presenting a problem, alternative solutions, and recommended course action
• After five semesters, a student will have enough knowledge and skill for the following (Usually in time for a Summer co-op):
  • Make a functional design of an intersection and a roundabout
  • Perform advanced spreadsheet functions, including the use of macros
  • Determine the transportation impacts of a proposed development:
  • Write a report on findings and suggest remedial measures
  • Avoid degradation in the level of service (LOS)
  • Use traffic capacity analysis software (Synchro or PTV Vistro)
  • Perform limited GIS queries and analysis
  • Research a technical transportation topic. Make a confident oral presentation in front of a large audience

Co-op Format

Students in the Business Administration - Human Resources program will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the field of human resources across various industry sectors (e.g. business, non-profit organizations, or government).

Topics such as organizational behaviour, training and development, recruitment and selection, health and safety, planning, performance management, employment legislation and career development, with additional functional areas of human resources will be presented throughout this program.

Program Highlights
