What you'll learn

• Understand transportation networks, public transportation systems, walking and cycling infrastructure and their roles in society.
• Develop planning skills to make decisions about present and future mobility needs.
• Apply current standards and practices to design roadways, intersections and other transportation facilities with safety as a key consideration.
• Acquire surveying, CAD, plan reading and visualization skills needed to create today’s modern infrastructure.
• Explore traffic data collection methods, traffic control devices and management strategies.
• Analyze operational performance, capacity and level of service (LOS) on streets, highways, public and transportation infrastructure, and walking and cycling infrastructure.

Experiential Learning

• After three semesters, a student will have enough knowledge to do the following (Usually in time for a Winter co-op):
  • Organize, conduct and analyze traffic field studies
  • Prepare a signage and pavement marking plan to local guidelines (e.g. the Ontario Traffic Manual)
  • Research various sources of information. Prepare detailed inventories in the form of maps, charts, graphs and spreadsheets
  • Do analyses of information such as:
    • Capacity of uninterrupted flow facilities
    • Parking activities
    • Public transit operations on a limited basis
    • Produce a simple roadway geometric design task
    • Evaluate transit planning decisions in relation to bus stops and network design
• After four semesters, and experience from the first work term, a student will be able to do more extensive assignments (Usually in time for a Fall co-op):
  • Analysis of information such as:
    • Capacity of interrupted flow facilities using leading industry software (Synchro and PTV Vistro)
    • Design pedestrian and cycling facilities to local guidelines (e.g. The Ontario Traffic Manual and the Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads)
    • Interpret the Ontario Planning Act as related to transportation engineering technology
    • Produce a roadway geometric design in computer-aided drafting software (both AutoCAD and Civil3D)
    • Understand the basics of construction management for a simple project
    • Prepare minor reports presenting a problem, alternative solutions, and recommended course action
• After five semesters, a student will have enough knowledge and skill for the following (Usually in time for a Summer co-op):
  • Make a functional design of an intersection and a roundabout
  • Perform advanced spreadsheet functions, including the use of macros
  • Determine the transportation impacts of a proposed development:
  • Write a report on findings and suggest remedial measures
  • Avoid degradation in the level of service (LOS)
  • Use traffic capacity analysis software (Synchro or PTV Vistro)
  • Perform limited GIS queries and analysis
  • Research a technical transportation topic. Make a confident oral presentation in front of a large audience

Students successfully completing our preparatory music program have repeatedly demonstrated greater success in their future studies in our Applied Music program, and other music programs across North America. Overview

• Designed for Secondary School graduates who have not completed the science or math requirements for technician/technology diploma programs. This program prepares students to be successful in subsequent technical programs. This unique program allows students to complete core courses from the first and second semesters of a variety of Engineering Technology diploma programs while enhancing their math, science, computer and communication skills. This program is ideally suited for students who have not completed the Grade 12 courses as required for admission to many diploma programs.
