Students in the Visual Arts at Thompson Rivers University can have the best of two worlds: courses can be counted toward a Diploma and toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts with a Minor in Visual Arts, or other university degrees at the same time. The Diploma allows students to sample a diverse selection of different media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and multi-media to gain an introduction to contemporary art practices along with art history and theory. The Diploma is useful in a resume for job applications or entrance to academic programs that require some background theory and practice in visual arts.

The Architectural & Engineering Technology Program (ARET) at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) emphasizes the design processes in building, civil and mechanical technologies, involving design projects for building structures, subdivisions, municipal services, and electrical, plumbing, lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems.

Courses in architectural design, statics and strength of materials, structural analysis, fluid mechanics, mechanical design, electrical design, steel design, wood design and reinforced concrete design will round out student's problem solving skills in engineering and building design. ARET students will also acquire knowledge in construction management, construction contracts, specifications, estimating, building regulations, technical writing and construction surveying.

Train as a therapist specializing in cardiopulmonary disease prevention and education. Learn to assess and treat disorders of the lungs, heart, and vascular system in this professional medical program, the only one of its kind in BC. The three-year RT diploma program includes a one-year clinical at various hospitals.

Respiratory therapy is an allied health profession devoted to the scientific application of technology in order to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, management and care of patients with cardiopulmonary and associated disorders.

Post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program

Communication and New Media Studies
This stream covers the aesthetic, narrative and theoretical aspects of technology, as well as computer-mediated communication. If you have an interest in the ways technology, design and business interact, this program is for you.

Taking this stream will help you understand how "new" media fit in with forms and practices that are a part of "old" media. You will be able to anticipate developments in new media, and the genres and other patterns that they manifest — such as story and play in computer games; community, conversation and interpersonal communication with smartphones and social software; the way charisma, character and identity are communicated across a range of media.

Communication and Public Relations
This stream covers the practical and commercial application of communication. If you have business, tourism, entrepreneurial and public service ambitions, this program will show you how communication can enhance your business practices. Close ties with the Tourism and Business faculties offer the benefit of preparing you for a wide variety of business and event planning situations. No other such program exists in the Kamloops region.

This program offers graduates a background in communication history and theory, a wide reservoir of meaning-making skills (image-based, language-based, etc.), marketing knowledge and event planning. The communication courses offer training in strategies of communication design and the application of theory through pragmatic application. Public relations graduates should be well-rounded professional communicators who are prepared to enter the public or private sectors.

Complement your strong technical expertise with the knowledge and skills required to become an effective workplace manager. Learn to communicate and lead effectively, manage large-scale projects and emerging technologies, operate sustainably, function in a global economy, and perform research. Some courses count as prerequisites of the Master of Business Administration.

Study the chemical processes taking place in the environment as a result of human activities including urban air and water pollution, depletion of ozone layer, production of toxic substances from chemical wastes, prevalence of pesticides, and climate change. Learn the fundamentals to accurately assess human activities in the environment.

Learn the basics of working in the field of tourism while developing skills for resort and hotel management. Topics include planning, marketing, and services, plus engagement with culture and the natural environment. Learn about hotel operations, information technology, event management and tourism entrepreneurship.

The Adventure Guide Diploma is a fast-paced, two-year course of study comprised of field trips, outdoor skills instruction, and self-directed expeditions. Courses cover a wide range of adventure activities and theoretical topics. Field trips make up 60 percent of the course load.
