The Bachelor of Recreation Management and Community Development combines a strong theoretical framework with practical experiences to help students learn about community development, sport and event management, sustainable tourism and environmental management.

Physical Geography examines the natural and physical systems of the Earth including the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere (ice and snow), hydrosphere (water) and lithosphere (land surface). Physical geographers also look at the connections between these systems, how they change over time, and the implications of these changes. Atmospheric science covers topics such as climate change, storms (including tornadoes), weather systems and other atmospheric phenomena. Biogeography is the study of the biosphere, and examines the geographic nature of plants, animals, and ecosystems. Hydrology is the study of the Earth’s water in its many forms including ice, snow, rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Lastly, geomorphology examines the nature of the Earth’s land surface features such as mountains and river.

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. Programs provide a comprehensive study of modern microbiology ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in microbiological techniques.

The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Beyond the first-year level there are courses in every important field of French language and literature, from the Middle Ages to the present day, including the literature of French Canada, French-speaking African countries and translation techniques. France, Quebec French-speaking African cinema are also taught and the department has specialists in these areas. Each year a number of visiting distinguished scholars give lectures on their special interest, and in some cases, conduct seminars for senior students.

Biotechnology is the application of the principles of chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to the development of new technologies. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program, The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Geography is a broad synthesizing discipline that studies humans and the Earth by focusing on the themes of place and space. Geography is therefore not an encyclopedic listing of capital cities, mountains and rivers, but rather an understanding of the causes, effects, implications, and importance of these and other features. As Geography is so broad, it is often studied as a number of separate but closely related sub-disciplines, notably physical geography and human geography, and also regional geography (Area Studies), topical geography and geographic techniques (Geomatics).

The Bachelor of Environmental Design program is a strong multidisciplinary undergraduate degree that provides a solid base of design education for students intending to pursue careers or graduate studies in a wide variety of disciplines, including the Faculty's master's degrees in Architecture, City Planning, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture, and at other institutions globally.

The Bachelor of Environmental Design Degree (BEnvD) is a four-year program consisting of two years of common foundation studies, followed by two years of pre-professional intermediate studies in one of three areas of focus: Architecture, Interior Environments, or Landscape + Urbanism.

Years 1 and 2 of the program provide a solid grounding in the basic knowledge and language shared by all of the environmental design disciplines. Students come to understand the holistic nature of environmental design and, at an early stage, begin to establish a rich and multidisciplinary dialogue with their peers, while discovering strengths and interests relating to a particular design discipline. Years 3 and 4 provide opportunities to be challenged by academic and professional design theories and practices specific to one of three particular disciplines:

• Landscape + urbanism
