Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures which provide the language, reasoning, and analytic tools that many other disciplines use to investigate their areas.

In this program the emphasis is on Mathematics and another field of study. For example: Mathematics and Computer Science; Mathematics and Economics; or Mathematics and Statistics.

Good accounting results in good decision-making. The study of accounting gives students the knowledge and professional judgment to determine the most useful way to communicate financial information.

The accounting major is the first step in obtaining a thorough understanding of accounting. The accounting major will give you the knowledge and professional judgment to determine the most useful way to communicate financial information.

After graduation, many students continue in their accounting studies and pursue one of the following professional designations: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA), or Certified Management Accountant (CMA.)

Mechanical engineering is the use of principles of mechanics, materials and energy to design machines and processes. The Mechanical Engineering program allows great flexibility and choice with an Aerospace Option and Manufacturing Option, and specialties in energy systems, advanced materials and solid mechanics.

The University of Manitoba’s Italian program allows students to master the Italian language and acquire cultural knowledge. An emphasis is placed on language skills as well as in inter-cultural skills.

Interesting courses and unique opportunities

• The Italian courses offered at the University of Manitoba not only teach grammar and contemporary literature but also touch upon Italian culture and history. In-class opportunities for conversation and comprehension are abundant and designed to facilitate practical experience in using the language.
• Guest lecturers are brought in to speak on a variety of subjects, and there are frequent film showings.

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical composition, activity and constituents of living systems. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Interesting courses and unique opportunities
Within the Biochemistry programs, you can take courses and conduct research in topics ranging from chemistry to microbiology to biology including: cellular signaling and cancer biology, molecular biology, structural biology, biophysics and bioenergetics, genomics and genetics. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in scientific techniques. 

The Art History program offers students an opportunity to consider, in a cultural context, both Western and non-Western artistic traditions with an emphasis on the former from the Renaissance to the present. While all courses acknowledge methodological issues, the program also offers courses in art theory and criticism at the second and third-year levels. Students enrolled in this program broaden their knowledge of art production with studio electives.

The BFA Honours degree allows you to complete an additional year of study including art history and optional studio electives.

To transfer into the honours program, you must first successfully complete 69 credit hours of study in the Art History general program, with a degree GPA of 2.5. If you are a current student and wish to transfer to the BFA Art History honours program,

Agroecology specializes in the management and conservation of our natural and agricultural resources. Agroecologists develop environmentally friendly weed, insect and disease controls and also help farmers conserve their land and protect Canada’s wildlife and water supply. 

The Bachelor of Science (Agroecology) is the ideal program for students with a passion for our planet. Students will learn the biological and physical components of ecosystems, and how to achieve economically sustainable agricultural production while conserving resources and maintaining the integrity of our ecosystems.

Co-op programs
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if a student takes more work terms in winter).

Astronomy and astrophysics examine the universe, galaxies and stars as well as phenomena such as the birth of stars, how explosions of stars create fast moving cosmic ray particles and pulsars, and how the rotation of a galaxy reveals the presence of dark matter. A planetarium and two astronomical observatories enhance this program.  

Physical Geography examines the natural and physical systems of the Earth including the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere (ice and snow), hydrosphere (water) and lithosphere (land surface). Physical geographers also look at the connections between these systems, how they change over time, and the implications of these changes. Atmospheric science covers topics such as climate change, storms (including tornadoes), weather systems and other atmospheric phenomena. Biogeography is the study of the biosphere, and examines the geographic nature of plants, animals, and ecosystems. Hydrology is the study of the Earth’s water in its many forms including ice, snow, rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Lastly, geomorphology examines the nature of the Earth’s land surface features such as mountains and river.

Animal Systems focuses on the nutrition, management and welfare of livestock and poultry. Animal science professionals are committed to devising innovative solutions to the challenges posed by a growing world population, shifting diet patterns, limited resources, and changing climatic conditions.

The Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Animal Systems provides students with a firm understanding of animal production, including genetics, anatomy/physiology, nutrition, health and reproduction. It also provides courses in business management and communications.
