Actuarial mathematics involves the application of mathematical disciplines, particularly probability, statistics, and risk theory, to real-life financial problems involving future uncertainty. This analytical approach helps people and organizations quantify and reduce financial risk in areas as diverse as life, health, disability, marine, property and casualty insurance; annuities; and pension and employee benefits plans.

Astronomy and astrophysics examine the universe, galaxies and stars as well as phenomena such as the birth of stars, how explosions of stars create fast moving cosmic ray particles and pulsars, and how the rotation of a galaxy reveals the presence of dark matter. A planetarium and two astronomical observatories enhance this program.

Linguistics is the study of how human language is structured, acquired and used, how it changes over time, and how words and constructions mean what they do in human interaction. The program offers courses in a wide variety of the sub-fields of linguistics: the nature of meaning, sounds and patterns of sounds, the structure of words and sentences, anatomical foundations of language, historical linguistics, the role of language in society, signed language, and the relationship between language and gender.

Environmental Studies focuses on the complex relationships between humans, whether as individuals, communities or institutions, and the environment. It examines the social, cultural, institutional, political, policy and legal aspects surrounding environmental issues and concerns. The Environmental Studies Program uses not only scientific approaches but also traditional knowledge, and in doing so broadens the ways in which the environment is viewed. This is illustrated using local, regional, and international case studies, which reveal the implications of diversity and inequality. Students gain a broad and integrated understanding of diverse fields, and develop a wide awareness of human and environmental concerns, such as human health, community and urban planning.

Philosophy is the study of reality, knowledge, values, logic and related topics. The existence of free will or God, the nature of science, art, emotions and language, ethical theory, proofs, fallacies, and so on. It is one of the oldest subjects of study in the Western world. Philosophy students are trained to think abstractly and write clearly, and rationally assess ideas in a way that few others can equal.

The Bachelor of Nursing is offered in a community that is characterized by a mosaic of cultural groups. The curriculum gives students a solid base in theory. Clinical practice allows students to apply their skills and techniques in actual care-giving environments so that our graduates view people in their entirety when providing a service essential to community health and welfare.

The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Students admitted to the Master of Science in Management degree program will pursue a research-focused degree in one of the departments of Marketing, Finance, Actuarial Mathematics, Business Administration or Supply Chain Management. The M.Sc. program in Management is designed to produce graduates who have an academically more in-depth, rigorous training in their chosen management field than is the case for either B.Comm (Hons.) graduates or MBA graduates. In addition, the program seeks to develop strong research skills to meet the needs of employers as well as to more effectively prepare M.Sc. students for entrance into Ph.D. programs at the University of Manitoba.
