As a major in human resource management at the University of Manitoba, students will learn how to help companies recruit and select qualified people, effectively train and develop a workforce, generate effective total compensation systems, manage employee performance and employee relations, foster and maintain an engaged workforce and promote talented people through the organization. When these activities are done well, organizations are suitably prepared to accomplish their strategic directives, and are staffed with the right people in the right positions at the right time – a motivated and committed workforce who work together to build the organization’s success.

Genetics is the science of heredity, which deals with the mechanisms of inheritance. The Genetics program is interdisciplinary, comprising courses from Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Chemistry, Arts, Medicine and Agricultural and Food Science. The study of Genetics is divided into three broad areas: Classical genetics, population genetics, and molecular genetics. Students will study advances in medicine, agricultural techniques, heritable IQ, genetically modified organisms, genetic counselling and gene therapy. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

As society increasingly moves into the digital age, our need for those who can understand the management of information technology and information systems grow.

If you like working with technology and people, then a major in Management Information Systems is for you. You will learn how to determine what the information needs of a company are and how to design information systems that get real business done. You will study various kinds of software and learn how to manage an IT Project from start to finish.

The job market for MIS professionals is growing with an ongoing shortage across Manitoba and Canada. Our alumni are workings at companies like Great West Life, IBM, Investors Group, Wawanesa, and Standard Aero. Organizations will always have a need for in-house personnel or consultants with the MIS skill set taught at the Asper School of Business.

English Literature courses cover literature from the medieval period to the present and provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical methods. The program not only introduces students to an array of literary genres but also develops their creative and interpretive capabilities. The aim is to provide comprehensive historical coverage, to expand students' writing skills, and to promote the kind of analysis and argumentation that enables them to express their ideas clearly and effectively. The program also offers courses in Creative Writing.

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures which provide the language, reasoning, and analytic tools that many other disciplines use to investigate their areas.

Civil engineers plan, design, supervise construction, manage, and maintain facilities that are familiar to most people. They are involved with infrastructure and environmental projects such as bridges, dams, highways, water and waste-water treatment plants, airports, and flood control systems. Civil engineers increasingly use new technologies such as Geographical Information/Positioning Systems, advanced materials, remote sensing and monitoring in their projects.

Courses include engineering materials, fluid mechanics, structural design, infrastructure engineering and construction management, finite element method, application of geographic information systems, economics, transportation planning, environmental analysis and design, hydrology, and technology and society.

This Faculty of Arts interdisciplinary program explores the massive social and cultural changes in Central and East European countries that have dominated the world's attention. In addition to language courses, the CEES program also offers courses on literatures, cinemas, and cultures of the region, the issues of state formation and democratization, privatization and the creation of new market economies, and more. There are several active student clubs that enhance learning and travel study programs are also available.

Environmental Science examines the physical, chemical, and biological components of the Earth’s environment, its diverse systems, and the complex ways in which they interact. Environmental scientists use a variety of scientific and analytical techniques to measure environmental parameters, to evaluate the state of environmental systems, and to project the changes in environmental systems as a result of human activities and climate change. Natural and physical systems behavior is key to evaluating the implications of human activities such as agriculture, industry, and resource extraction, processing, and use. Environmental problems such as contamination and pollution, global warming, and biodiversity loss are studied with regard to past, present, and future practices and solutions.

University 1 offers the unique opportunity for students to plan for one or more target degree programs during their first year of university. University 1 is designed to meet the needs of students who are not sure which program they are going to pursue as well as students who are seeking advanced entry to a specific program. This allows students to design their schedule to meet the admission and/or first year course requirements of their target program(s).

If students are not yet sure which specific degree path is right for them, they have the flexibility to explore a variety of subject areas while in University 1. All of the courses that a student takes in University 1 can become part of a student's degree program. The program assists students transitioning from high school to university by providing a large support network for first year students in adapting to university life and academic expectations.

What is unique about this program at the U of M?
The First Year Planning Guide is an online resource to help guide students through decisions about first year course selection and degree planning.

• The majority of students at the U of M begin their first year of studies in University 1.
• Students who complete 24 to 30 credit hours of coursework while in University 1 will be eligible to transit to the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Science.
• The First 6 Weeks Program is a week by week introduction to academic skills and services that help students adjust to university life.
• The Next 6 Weeks Program is a week by week continuation of the First 6 Weeks Program that continues to help students become acquainted with university life, preparing them to begin looking and planning ahead.

Food scientists fuel the minds that feed the world. They study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food and use their findings to develop the nutritious, delicious and innovative foods products that line supermarket shelves everywhere.

In the Bachelor of Science (Food Science), students study food safety, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and sensory science. They develop a greater understanding of the fate of agricultural raw materials, and how such materials are processed and formulated into food products before being presented to the consumer.

Program focus options

• Science – Explores the science and technology of food processing, packaging, and preservation of foods
• Business – Explores the business and economics of food production, including marketing and finance, for students who wish to work in the food industry as business managers or entrepreneurs.

Co-op option
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if you take more work terms in winter).
