The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Political Studies examines the dynamics of human interaction in which individuals and groups compete, and cooperate, to achieve their goals, in the context of competing visions, values and interests. It is therefore a study of power, particularly in connection with law and public policy. Because people often disagree about, say, civil liberties, sustainable development, and distributive justice, they divide themselves into various groups: nations, political parties, trade unions, business associations, environmental organizations, to mention but a few. Political studies tries to understand what happens when individuals and groups struggle with one another to achieve their different goals. Within states there are mechanisms called governments to oversee and guide political struggle, and studying politics can help us better appreciate why various types of government behave the way they do.

Bachelor of Arts - Canadian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to study Canada from a full range of disciplinary perspectives. It examines both the past and the present from political, economic, social and cultural disciplinary perspectives. Courses that focus on Canada in the Faculty of Arts are drawn from Anthropology, Economics, English, French, History, Icelandic, Labour Studies, Political Studies, Religion, Slavic Studies and Sociology. In addition, certain courses in other faculties including Art History and Geography and Environment, are also available form Canadian Studies credit.

Bachelor of Arts or BA is an undergraduate program. Full form of BA is Bachlor of Arts and it comes under the discipline of humanities/arts. BA course duration is 3 years. Mechanical engineering is the use of principles of mechanics, materials and energy to design machines and processes. The Mechanical Engineering program allows great flexibility and choice with an Aerospace Option and Manufacturing Option, and specialties in energy systems, advanced materials and solid mechanics.

Food scientists fuel the minds that feed the world. They study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food and use their findings to develop the nutritious, delicious and innovative foods products that line supermarket shelves everywhere.

In the Bachelor of Science (Food Science), students study food safety, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and sensory science. They develop a greater understanding of the fate of agricultural raw materials, and how such materials are processed and formulated into food products before being presented to the consumer.

Program focus options

• Science – Explores the science and technology of food processing, packaging, and preservation of foods
• Business – Explores the business and economics of food production, including marketing and finance, for students who wish to work in the food industry as business managers or entrepreneurs.

Co-op option
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if you take more work terms in winter).

Environmental Studies focuses on the complex relationships between humans, whether as individuals, communities or institutions, and the environment. It examines the social, cultural, institutional, political, policy and legal aspects surrounding environmental issues and concerns. The Environmental Studies Program uses not only scientific approaches but also traditional knowledge, and in doing so broadens the ways in which the environment is viewed. This is illustrated using local, regional, and international case studies, which reveal the implications of diversity and inequality. Students gain a broad and integrated understanding of diverse fields, and develop a wide awareness of human and environmental concerns, such as human health, community and urban planning.

The Interdisciplinary Health Program offers education and training leading to a Bachelor of Health Studies degree. The Interdisciplinary Health Program (IHP) is a joint program between the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences in partnership with the Faculties of Arts and Science. Classes take place at the Fort Garry campus.

Our program focuses on health promotion. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of optimum health and well-being and the actions and circumstances that maintain those conditions. Health and wellness are understood in the context of the individual, the community and society with a particular focus on Manitoba and its peoples. 

The BHSt program requires the completion of 120 credit hours of required and elective coursework; this includes a minimum of 18 credit hours of concentration electives. Students must declare at least one concentration.

Concentrations

• Health Policy, Planning and Evaluation
  • This concentration provides foundational knowledge related to health policy development and related evaluation, and programming services. This can be a potential route for individuals seeking careers in areas such as health policy analysis or program planning and evaluation coordination.
• Health Promotion and Education
  • This concentration would be a route through which students pursuing a career as a home economics teacher could obtain their ‘teachable subjects’ in family studies and nutrition. Students should consult with academic advisors in the Faculty of Education as additional training will be required.
  • Students who pursue this concentration can also explore future career opportunities as community health educators, health-related fundraisers, health and safety coordinators, or professional home economists (PHEc).
• Family Health
  • This concentration is suitable for students interested in family social science. It provides the educational background suitable for a future career as a community wellness worker, victim services worker, youth care worker and residential care manager.
     

Geophysicists use the principles of physics and mathematics to study the Earth’s surface, internal structure and composition, atmosphere and magnetosphere. The many overlapping fields in Geophysics include: Earthquake Seismology, Exploration Seismology, Electromagnetic Geophysics, Gravity and Magnetic Geophysics, Geodesy, Geomagnetism as well as Geodynamics and High-Pressure Geophysics.

Geologists study the composition, structure, processes, and history of the Earth, as well as the distribution of mineral and energy resources. There are many overlapping fields of study for geologists including: Economic Geology, Petroleum Geology, Environmental Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Mineralogy, Crystallography and Petrology, Paleontology, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy as well as Structural Geology and Tectonics.
