Comparative Cultural Studies invites students to pursue the study of cultural expressions as significant ways we make meaning of our world. Through critical comparative analysis of culture with a global perspective, we can begin to understand the relationships between ourselves and others around the world. 

Why Comparative Cultural Studies at UNB?
Comparative Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary program. This means it draws its subject matter and its approaches from a range of areas: literary studies, languages, cultural studies, media and film studies, art history, music studies, etc. Additionally, its focus is international & comparative. You learn about culture(s) and arts across time and geographic regions, in a wide variety of contexts and representations.

The mysteries of number theory and the geometry of curved spaces: these are areas with important applications in data security, computer design and cosmology. For ages, through research both pure and applied, mathematicians have made invisible and unsung contributions to advancements in science and technology, and the importance of mathematical training is increasingly recognized by employers and governments around the world.

In numerous rankings of careers, a significant portion of the top careers are math-intensive, and a degree in Mathematics provides excellent training.  For instance, CareerCast annually ranks 200 careers according to environment, income, outlook, and stress, and Mathematician, Actuary, Statistician, Data Scientist, Information Security Analyst, and Computer Systems Analyst regularly rank in the top ten.

Two Options

Mathematics:The mathematics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry, government or education. Mathematics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of application such as the physical sciences, computer science, engineering or business.

Statistics: The statistics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry or government as well as to provide a background for graduate study. Statistics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of applications such as the physical sciences, forestry, or computer science.

Hands-on learning

• There are summer employment opportunities (e.g. NSERCs Undergraduate Student Research Awards) for upper-year students
• The Faculty of Science has a Co-op degree program

UNB’s Adult Education program combines credit courses with academic research, applied projects, and continuing professional development workshops. You’ll learn how to plan, administer, and deliver training to adults of all ages in all contexts, and you’ll explore principles of adult learning, the nature of adult learners, and the history and philosophy of adult education.

Philosophy investigates many of the big questions of life: what is a human being? Are there such things as justice, beauty or God? What counts as knowledge?

Investigating these and other questions, such as the nature of time, the relation between body and mind, how we define good and bad, is a conversation that draws from great thinkers-­â€-­â€past and present. This is a discipline that challenges each of us to think about these kinds of problems critically, creatively and systematically.

The Bachelor of Science in Environment and Natural Resources inspires students to solve natural and environmental problems from a holistic, systems perspective. By studying the land, water, air, plants, and people, you’ll learn how to predict and interpret climate change and build a solutions-based career that protects and bolsters natural resources. 

Why Environment and Natural Resources at UNB?

This program also provides the opportunity to complete a Wildlife Management Certification or a minor in Marine Biology through the Canadian Rivers Institute

Archaeology is the study of human civilizations and societies, primarily through the study of the materials they left behind.

Archaeology at UNB Fredericton is an interdepartmental program provided by the Departments of Anthropology and Classics and Ancient History in the Faculty of Arts. A Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology covers anthropological archaeology (human-focused archaeology) and classical archaeology (investigation of the Ancient Greece and Rome).

The first two years of the program consist of required courses which provide a foundation in the discipline of Archaeology. In the final two years students specialize in the Anthropological or Classical streams, but are required to take some upper-level classes from both streams.

An important part of the program is the archaeological field work requirement. This requirement may also be satisfied by completing a field school program offered through Anthropology or Classics and Ancient History, or through field schools offered by research institutions or universities around the globe.

Opportunities also exist for work placements with government-sponsored or private-sector cultural resource management-based archaeological projects. These also satisfy the requirement for field work and allow students to gain employment experience and earn a wage.

Russian and Eurasian Studies is an interdisciplinary major and minor program administered by a committee drawn from the departments involved in the program. Interested students should first contact the Director who is the representative from the Russian section of the Department of Culture and Language Studies.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

• Major in Russian and Eurasian Studies
  • A major in Russian and Eurasian Studies shall consist of a minimum of 30 ch of advanced level courses relating to Russia and the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. To qualify to enter this program, students must first have satisfactorily completed 6 ch in the Russian language at the introductory level (RUSS 1013 and RUSS 1023 ) and 6 ch at the intermediate level (RUSS 2013 and RUSS 2023). The 30 ch for the Major will be selected from the list below and must meet the following requirements:

A Bachelor of Science in Forestry (BScF) is about trees, plants, water, and wildlife management – the atmosphere, soils, and landscapes. It’s about people’s beliefs and values. It’s about the economy and about spirit. BScF is about managing all these in sustainable ways. It’s about solving complex problems for the benefit of current and future generations.

Why Forestry at UNB?
The BScF program at UNB is one of the oldest in Canada and has been offered for more than 100 years. We have a deep history in producing graduates who are much sought after in the industry, and many have gone on to become leaders in the field. We are the only English Faculty of Forestry in Atlantic Canada.

Hands-on learning
You will learn outdoors in our university’s forests, including the 1,500-hectare University Forest near the Fredericton campus. You will also collaborate on projects with the scientists and managers at the nearby Atlantic Forestry Research Centre and at the headquarters of the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources.
