The mysteries of number theory and the geometry of curved spaces: these are areas with important applications in data security, computer design and cosmology. For ages, through research both pure and applied, mathematicians have made invisible and unsung contributions to advancements in science and technology, and the importance of mathematical training is increasingly recognized by employers and governments around the world.

In numerous rankings of careers, a significant portion of the top careers are math-intensive, and a degree in Mathematics provides excellent training.  For instance, CareerCast annually ranks 200 careers according to environment, income, outlook, and stress, and Mathematician, Actuary, Statistician, Data Scientist, Information Security Analyst, and Computer Systems Analyst regularly rank in the top ten.

Two Options

Mathematics:The mathematics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry, government or education. Mathematics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of application such as the physical sciences, computer science, engineering or business.

Statistics: The statistics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry or government as well as to provide a background for graduate study. Statistics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of applications such as the physical sciences, forestry, or computer science.

Hands-on learning

• There are summer employment opportunities (e.g. NSERCs Undergraduate Student Research Awards) for upper-year students
• The Faculty of Science has a Co-op degree program

Marketing is about attracting customers. It’s about identifying a unique product, branding it, and then communicating it in a way that makes customers want it.

Through UNB’s Marketing program, you’ll learn how to identify, brand, and communicate products and services to customers. You’ll explore key areas of marketing, such as public relations, advertising, promotions, product development, pricing, and distribution. Marketing courses focus heavily on entrepreneurship and real-world marketing applications so that you’ll gain real-world experience and perspectives. In fact, many of your marketing courses allow you to apply your learning with real businesses and start-ups by planning their marketing activities and social media marketing plans.

One of the first programs of its kind in Canada, Media Arts & Cultures (MAAC) at UNB has offered students a dynamic mix of critical media studies and hands-on creative coursework since 1996. As a MAAC major, you will learn about media by making media. You will consider, critique, and engage intellectually with media, but you will also learn the tools and techniques used today to create media content.

MAAC combines elements of the liberal arts and fine arts – critical thinking and creative expression. Like all Arts majors, you will write research papers and give presentations, but you will also make videos, media remixes, animations, blogs, and video games.

In Media Arts & Cultures, we'll teach you to be both a critical consumer and a creative producer, both a scholar of media and an author of media. You will not only learn from reading textbooks but also from screening a film or playing a game - and then making one yourself.

Hands-on learning
Media Arts & Cultures emphasizes experiential learning throughout the program. You will combine courses in the history and language of film with courses in film production. A course in game studies that examines philosophical reflections on play and games in western culture can be paired with another on contemporary video game design. 

The Faculty of Engineering offers a program leading to a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, administered by the Dr. J. Herbert Smith/ACOA Chair. The mission of the program is to provide undergraduate and continuing education students opportunities to experience the realities of entrepreneurship and management in technology-based businesses and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business. The Diploma program consists of three core courses and two electives, totalling 15 credit hours. In selecting courses, students will be advised to develop a curriculum that builds skills in three key areas: business management, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Up to twelve credit hours of required courses for the TME diploma can be shared as credit towards a degree. Each department shall determine its own maximum allowable concurrent credit hours, which may be less than, but no greater than twelve credit hours. Students who intend to complete the diploma must obtain both department and TME program approval of the courses which will be applied towards the degree and the diploma.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to the program as early as their first year of study and begin by taking elective courses. A minimum of 80 credit hours completed, or permission of the TME program Chair, is required to enroll in TME core courses.  Applicants who are not full-time students may still apply for the TME Diploma (or enroll in one or more TME courses). These applicants may be requested to submit the following documents along with their TME Diploma Application:

The Department of Culture and Media Studies houses specialists in media studies, literatures, film, music, and languages. This multidisciplinary group is dedicated to fostering broad understandings of culture while also offering opportunities for students to engage critically and creatively with an array of media arts, global cultures and musical traditions.
The language courses are a continuous series and must be taken in the normal sequence. Students with some prior knowledge of Spanish should have this assessed in order to be placed at their proper level. The first two years provide students with a solid working knowledge of Spanish. Students may change streams in consultation with the Department.

If you’re curious about the social-psychological aspects of recreation, sports, and physical activity, UNB’s Bachelor of Recreation and Sport Studies program is designed for you. This four-year program balances theory and hands-on practice. The Film Studies Minor offers students from all faculties the opportunity to study film (and video) from a variety of perspectives, including theory, history, and analysis, as well as a range of topics around national cinemas and genres, among others. In addition, students have the opportunity to study film from creative and practical perspectives in production and other practice-driven courses as well as creative writing for the screen. In the Chemical Engineering program at UNB, you’ll learn how to transform raw materials into useful products while protecting the environment, managing resources, and meeting strict health and safety standards. You’ll also explore chemical processes that improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase safety and security. Examples include the development of more affordable drugs, more efficient fuels, and better pollution controls. In other words, you’ll explore ways to make the world a better place. 

Chemical Engineering is available as a major in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering program. Two option programs within the technical electives stream are available: Energy Conversion Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Gender and Women's Studies gives students an opportunity to explore gender issues in an interdisciplinary context, and it offers a useful complement to other fields. The required courses provide a framework for understanding the gender-based aspects of knowledge, power, and society.

Gender and Women's Studies represents a new approach to knowledge; it examines the gender-based aspects of human experience and women's roles in society. Gender and Women's Studies includes a wide variety of academic disciplines and professions.

Bachelor of Arts
The Gender and Women's Studies program is available as a major, double major or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree. Courses in the Faculty of Arts cover a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions. In your first two years of the program, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.

Nurses are always in demand. If you’re passionate about caregiving and thrive in dynamic learning environments then nursing is the place for you. Nurses work with diverse and vulnerable populations in a wide variety of health care settings at home and abroad, such as: schools, hospitals, daycares, long-term care facilities, and community clinics.

The four-year Bachelor of Nursing program comprises a majority of coursework in Nursing, as well as courses from other disciplines, including: English, Biology, and Psychology.

A Bachelor of Nursing from UNB qualifies graduates to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
