Health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental and social well-being. How do we promote the health and well-being of all members of society?
Society faces significant health challenges. Healthcare is the biggest ticket item in most provincial government budgets in Canada. Still, many people don’t get the care they need. They spend hours in emergency waiting rooms or months to get into an addiction treatment program. At the same time, the Canadian population is getting older. An increasing number are overweight and suffer from chronic diseases. This puts even more pressure on healthcare services.

The average life expectancy for an aboriginal male in Canada is ten years less than that of a non-aboriginal male. How can we explain this and what can be done to reduce health inequalities? Research shows that regular exercise can prevent many health problems, yet many people still don’t do it. Why not, and how can we get them to change their behaviour? In general, how do we build communities that enhance the health and well-being of all residents? 

If these questions interest you, the Health and Society major might be the program for you.

The Bachelor of Health is a 4-year interdisciplinary program focused on all aspects of health. Students develop the knowledge and the skills necessary for success in a variety of careers in the health sector. The program is also comprehensive preparation for further professional or graduate studies.  All students complete core courses covering the biological and social determinants of health, current health issues, health policy, the management of healthcare services, research methods, and data analysis.

In addition to the core Health courses taken each year, Health and Society Majors take a series of courses which further develop their knowledge and skills in health policy and policy analysis; their understanding of how income, education, place of residence and other social factors affect individual and population health; and their social science research and communications skills.

Why Society and Health at UNB?
This is a unique interdisciplinary program providing students with a solid grounding in health and wellness in all its dimensions, healthcare systems, as well as in-depth training in their chosen major in healthcare management, biomedical sciences, or health policy and the social determinants of health. As they will in their careers, students work together in multidisciplinary teams addressing current health issues.

Hands-on learning
Bachelor of Health students experience a variety of work settings in the healthcare system and in the community through job-shadowing and internships. Beginning in their first year, students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in practical lab experiences and community-based research assignments.

In the fourth year capstone course, students from all three majors come together to work in multidisciplinary teams to analyze and address a critical health issue identified in consultation with experts in the healthcare sector.

The Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering is the home of the Chemistry department in Saint John and is located on the top floor of William F. Ganong Hall.

Chemistry is the study of atoms, molecules and their interactions. It is often described as the central science because studies in biology, geology and physics examine the gross behaviour of materials which is a reflection of what is occurring at the molecular level. 

Our principle teaching strategy is to work with small groups of students to maximize the personal experience and optimize skills development.

Anthropologists study humans: who we are, what we do, what we say, what we look like, and what we believe in.

At UNB, Anthropology is a holistic discipline, meaning you’ll examine humans, both past and present, as biological, cultural, and social beings. You’ll explore three central subfields – sociocultural anthropology, archeology, and biological anthropology – and you’ll have access to our expanded lab facility that includes a vast collection of human, hominid, and primate teaching specimens.

We use a range of learning styles and innovative teaching methods, and we incorporate findings from our research. Our small class sizes mean greater interaction between you, your instructors, and your peers.

Geology is the study of the Earth, its origin, structure and composition. Rocks are a key component of our landscape. They give us clues as to how and when it formed, and the materials it contains.

Their structures help unravel the secrets of what the Earth was like in the past. To a geologist, our modern-day landscape speaks volumes.

The goal of geology as a science is to better understand the processes that acted upon the Earth’s system in the past to help us foresee how geologic events and processes will affect us in the future.

Many of us don’t take the time and stop to think about just how much geology affects our surroundings. Geology encompasses many parts of the Earth's system. In studying about the Earth’s origins and evolution, you will learn about the formation of the planet, how the continents and oceans are formed and how they grow or are destroyed, and how all this was discovered. By studying fossils, you'll learn how our climate has changed over time and what that means for our environment.

You will learn about minerals, how they form and grow, and under what conditions this happens. We explore how minerals come together and form rocks, and examine how looking at a rock tells you something about the environment in which it formed. We will talk about volcanoes, landslides, earthquakes, glaciers, deserts and rivers - all of which shape the surface of the planet.

At the University of New Brunswick Saint John, we teach first-year courses in the geology and geo-engineering programs. Some second year courses are also available with an emphasis on paleontology and the environment, of particular interest to biology students.

As a Bachelor of Information Sciences (B.I.Sc.) graduate, you will learn how to establish programs to collect and analyze data, which will better equip people to function within their work environments.

The interdisciplinary B.I.Sc. program at University of New Brunswick Saint John draws upon business administration, mathematics, computer science, and economics, with a focus on the methods and techniques for effective collection and analysis of data.

You can choose a specialization which will allow you to concentrate on your areas of interest and application:

Linguistics courses offer insights into the relationship between the brain, mind and language. By studying linguistics, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to understand foreign languages and the difficulties foreign students encounter in English and French. 

Linguistic courses complement programs in Education, English, Languages, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Science, and Computer Science. Linguistics is a requirement for Speech Therapy, TESL, and other programs related to language processing and language engineering.

Criminal Justice Studies at UNB is about crime, criminal behaviour, and the criminal justice system. It’s about social control, crime prevention, victimization, and criminal sanctions. And it’s about examining all of these things from multiple perspectives – psychological, sociological, historical, philosophical, and business.

Bio-Psychology examines the human body and human behaviour. This interdisciplinary program is designed for students interested in pursing careers or post-graduate studies in neuroscience, human biology, medicine, dentistry or pharmacy.

In your first year you will take introductory courses in a cross section of science disciplines. These survey courses serve as the foundation for upper level study.
A major in Biology-Psychology will include studies in specialized topics such as perception, animal learning, cognition, social and developmental psychology, microbiology, genetics, physiology and more.
