The Department of Computer Science offers programs of study involving interdepartmental, multi-institutional and inter-institutional collaboration that has attracted faculty members and graduate students from all over the world. Students may pursue full-time or part-time graduate study leading towards the MSc and PhD degrees.

The MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science focus on four main areas of research: artificial intelligence; databases and information retrieval; graphics, image and audio processing; multimedia, and software engineering. Specifically, active research topics conducted by faculty members include, but are not limited to:

• Data mining, knowledge discovery and machine learning, Bayesian networks, rough set theory, uncertainty management, quantitative and temporal reasoning
• Graphical modeling and rendering algorithms, animation, image and signal processing, facial recognition, computational music and audio, information visualization, human computer interaction
• Information retrieval, cognitive informatics, Web intelligence and service, electronic commerce, database theory, and information theory and its applications in communications
• Language-based software security, data security, agent-oriented software engineering, software reuse, formal methods, and distance education
• Algorithm design and analysis, theory of computing, computational geometry, graph theory

MSc (Project Route)
A fully qualified student may complete a Master's project route by undertaking 21 credits of coursework and 9 credits of professionally oriented project research. The student must complete a project report to the satisfaction of his/her supervisor(s), and pass a project defense. In addition, the student is required to give two non-credit CS seminar presentations.

Students can complete the pre-medicine requirements for the University of Saskatchewan MD Degree at the University of Regina. Students must complete a 4-year baccalaureate preparatory degree to be eligible to apply to the College of Medicine. As well, students will be required to write the MCAT for admission.  The most up-to-date requirements and notice of upcoming changes will be posted on the College of Medicine website at www.usask.ca/medicine.

Students looking to apply to medical schools other than the U of S are able to complete their pre-med requirements here, but should check the various medical schools for their particular admission requirements.  These students are welcome to consult with our advisors to ensure they get everything they need. Pre-medicine courses completed at the University of Regina can be used toward a variety of programs at the University of Regina.

What is Environmental Systems Engineering?
Our Environmental Systems Engineering (EVSE) program is very popular with students and respected by industry, largely because of its timely combination of environmental concerns and the systems approach to addressing civil and industrial environmental issues. Areas of study include environmental system design and impact and risk assessment.

Our Program
The Environmental Systems Engineering (EVSE) program demonstrates and applies systems engineering principles to environmental issues associated with water resources, air pollution, transportation, industrial development, and waste management.

The University of Regina offers an exciting inter-disciplinary research-oriented graduate degree program in Gerontology. The study of gerontology (the comprehensive study of aging and the problems and opportunities of older adults) is becoming increasingly important because it addresses one of the most significant demographic issues confronting our society today, namely the increasing proportion of the population that is over the age of 65. Students with professional degrees, (e.g., medicine, social work, physical therapy, nursing, optometry, etc.) as well as undergraduate degrees in kinesiology, psychology, health studies, health science, biology or other related health disciplines are encouraged to apply for the fall semester. The program is coordinated by the Centre on Aging and Health, University of Regina and involves the collaboration of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies and the Faculty of Social Work. Students can work towards an M.A. or an M.Sc. degree depending on the nature of their thesis research. The program aims to provide research training and specialized gerontological knowledge to health professionals and to students wishing to pursue doctoral studies and research careers. The program aims to address both the physiological and psychosocial aspects of aging.

Do you enjoy uncovering a story? Are you always asking "why"? Our School of Journalism is recognized nationally and is the only Bachelor of Journalism in Western Canada. You will study the history of journalism, media convergence and ownership trends, as well as Aboriginal issues in journalism.

Learn newspaper and magazine writing, television and radio news and documentary production, digital editing and desktop and Internet publishing. You will be encouraged to challenge conventional wisdom and develop your own writing style. Students spend a semester on an internship in a radio, television, newspaper, magazine or Internet newsroom.

To begin this degree you will need to register in the Faculty of Arts as a Pre-Journalism student. Entrance into the School of Journalism is competitive and happens after 2nd year (60 credit hours) is complete.

The program is a cross-disciplinary study of Indigenous societies, cultures and knowledge. It is open to both Indigenous and non- indigenous students and explores the history and life of Indigenous people in Saskatchewan, Canada, North America and around the world. It incorporates traditional teachings offered by Elders, as well as traditional perspectives and content.

This 30 credit hour program is designed for advanced studies in music theory. The first 15 credit hours are devoted to honing students’ critical writing and thinking skills, through courses in bibliography and research techniques specific to music, specialized music theory seminars, and directed reading courses in the area of the student’s research interests. All students also take graduate courses in critical theory in the fine arts. The remainder of the program is devoted to writing a thesis on an original topic chosen by students in consultation with their supervisor. Current areas of faculty expertise are broad and include tonal and post-tonal analysis, music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, opera of the 18th and 19th centuries, music in Canada, the Lied, contemporary classical music, and interdisciplinary topics such as soundscapes and sound art.

The Faculty of Social Work is committed to a graduate education program that will enhance the quality of individual and community well being.  Our focus is with the development of advanced social work intervention methods as well as with broader aspects and issues of service delivery, professional leadership, social policy analysis, and social welfare research.

Students may select major areas of study such as: social policy, social justice and human rights, direct practice, community development and research.  The MSW program provides an option to complete the program with a thesis or a practicum.

Program Objective
The MSW program is designed to enable students to undertake a variety of responsibilities in management, policy formulation, program consultation, planning, research roles, and advanced direct social work practice within human services. Fundamental to the program is an emphasis on integrative analysis as a means of understanding the manner in which social research, direct social work practice, social policy development, and social administration are interrelated.
Candidates may be enrolled on either a full time or part time basis. Students must maintain candidacy. No more than two semesters may elapse before a student is required to register. Students have a maximum of five years to complete the thesis program and six years to complete the practicum program.
