The construction industry is one of the most dynamic, diverse and significant in the world. We live, work and play in the built environment, and our Construction Management degree course will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of the technology and management involved in its creation.

We'll focus on the key stages and process of planning, construction and maintenance. These range from building design and technology, to resource management and project administration. Practical experience comes in the form of a week-long residential visit where you’ll take part in the construction of an iconic building or structure – learning management and construction trade skills along the way.

Our Pharmaceutical Science degree course will develop your understanding of the science that underpins medicine, preparing you to translate scientific discoveries and technological advances into improved healthcare.

Our four-year Civil Engineering MEng course will give you all the technical skills and intellectual know how to be a civil engineer in a constantly changing world.

Our MEng course focusses on infrastructure engineering and will give you the practical skills and experience to work on multi-million pound infrastructure projects. You’ll develop crucial mathematical, technical and design skills that all civil engineers need, while taking a more holistic view of the overall design of a built environment which is resilient to future challenges.

At ARU, our research philosophy focusses on future cities, and how infrastructure and communities need to adapt and transform themselves in response to future challenges such as climate change, resource and energy scarcity and an aging and increasing population. Such challenges cannot be tackled by one discipline alone: professionals across the sector need to collaborate to create smart and innovative solutions. As a graduate, you will be ideally placed to work in such multidisciplinary teams, responding to these global challenges. Our facilities are the perfect places to test and research different materials and designs throughout your Civil Engineering course. You’ll work in specialist labs for geotechnics, hydraulics, structures, engineering materials and concrete testing. You'll go out on site visits, and hear guest lecturers from industry. You might even want to enhance your skills and CV by doing a work placement year.

This course includes, at a subsidised cost, a week-long residential field trip to Constructionarium in the first year. Constructionarium is a hands-on construction experience for students; participants construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world. The principle is to link academic institutes with industry and to ensure that you can apply your knowledge in a practical, safe and relevant environment.

If you hope to use your legal skills in other areas – such as business, finance, policy making or public service – our law course will give you the transferable skills you need.  

Many of our students choose to study law because they’re motivated by the idea of helping people. And so, from your first year, you’ll have the opportunity to work in our law clinics in Cambridge or Chelmsford. With support from qualified solicitors, you’ll advise members of the public on legal issues.

All this practical experience is, of course, backed up by classroom teaching. Our lecturers combine academic modules with those that focus on areas of professional practice, such as human rights law.

We want you to graduate ready to impress employers with your practical experience and know-how. That’s why you’ll get hands-on from day one with our Managing Supply Chains in Practice module as well as with LINKS, our intensive supply chain simulation game.

You’ll develop crucial knowledge of supply chains and industry connections with our guest lecturers, networking opportunities and field trips to the Jaguar plant, Amazon’s Fulfilment Centre or BMW in Germany. You can also gain valuable experience by taking an optional placement year.

Based in Cambridge, Chelmsford or Peterborough (two-year accelerated degree) our course will prepare you to join postgraduate Initial Teacher Training.

Our Primary Education Studies course is designed for those looking for a career working with children aged 3-12 and their families. It’s also a great option if you already work in education but want to learn more about the subject or progress in your career.

We focus on education history, policy and the way children are taught today. You’ll graduate with a thorough understanding of classroom management, lesson planning, National Curriculum subjects, and the three Key Stages in primary education. We’ll also touch on special educational needs provision.

Throughout the course there’s a strong focus on the core subjects that all primary-aged pupils study: reading, writing, maths and science. You’ll become familiar with teaching approaches and how to make adjustments to suit learners of all abilities.

Civil engineering changes our world – from buildings and transport to the environment and civil protection. It covers everything from creative concepts to physical construction and maintenance. On our newly designed course your learning will be based around the civil engineering project and hands-on learning, giving you the chance to immediately apply the theory you learn in class to address the challenges of the project. You will learn how to carry out site investigations, select the best materials for the job, analyse and design structures and engineering systems, plan the construction process and assess and mitigate the environmental impact of the project using our specialist workshops and labs. You will learn how to carry out land surveys and use state of the art CAD systems and specialist software to design and analyse complex systems.

You will assess the safety of a structure such as an old building to approve it as safe for others to work on, and provide specifications and calculations for designs.

Using our specialist workshops and labs you will learn how to carry out site investigations, select the best materials for the job, analyse and design structures and engineering systems, plan the construction process and assess and mitigate the environmental impact of the project. You’ll design, analyse, build and test your projects, developing your technical skills and knowledge through hands-on practice, preparing you to hit the ground running as a graduate civil engineer.

So much of our everyday life is influenced by engineered products. Study your Mechanical Engineering MEng (Hons) degree at ARU and learn to design, develop, operate and manufacture products and parts in our specialist lab whether it is in the manufacturing, the design, or even the materials. Our four-year MEng Mechanical Engineering degree course has been newly reimagined, focusing on project based learning, allowing you to take your in-class theory and apply it in a hands-on project module that will run throughout the year.

Engineering is all about taking a product or system and looking at how it can be improved, whether it is in the manufacturing, the design, or even the materials.

On our four-year Mechanical Engineering course, you'll learn through a wide range of lab sessions. We'll explore manufacturing, 3D printing, thermodynamics, dynamics, and structural analysis so you can analyse, calculate, model, and experience your proposed concepts. As a part of your project-based learning you will work as part of a team, with students from the different areas of mechanical engineering. This will allow you to develop skills that are invaluable to future employers, including analytical and creative problem-solving skills. You’ll also benefit from dedicated support from our experienced staff, who are experienced industry professionals and expert researchers.

This Mechanical Engineering MEng course differs from the BEng as it has an increased emphasis on project work. You’ll also undertake an integrated Major Group Project in your final year where you’ll look to solve real-world industrial problems and as a result, benefit from working with potential future employers.

You’ll also take an individual research module in Year 3 to boost your self-managed learning and research skills. As a MEng student you’ll develop valuable commercial skills in areas such as marketing, Intellectual Property, team working dynamics, leadership, as well as engineering project management.

Our course leads students through computer based advanced design, simulation and modelling practice in various topics including computational engineering, fluid dynamics, stress analysis, and industrial management. You’ll benefit from using our workshop and laboratory facilities including CAD/CAM and engineering computer modelling centre, industrial-scale CNC milling and lathe machines, metal and plastic rapid prototyping machines, scanning electronic microscope, Instron bi-axial fatigue-testing machine, tensile-testing machine, material-preparation facilities, welding equipment, electronic testing and measuring equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generating and testing facilities, wind tunnel, air compressors, steam engine and many more laboratory facilities used during course and in individual and group major projects.

Like our BEng course, our MEng is accredited by both the IMechE and IET, meaning that our course has been approved by a professional body as meeting their level of requirements

Here at ARU, our nursing tutors will help you evaluate and develop your skills, and build on your theoretical knowledge of nursing.

On the practical side, you’ll use our state-of-the-art clinical skills laboratories that will give you an unparalleled opportunity to fine-tune your nursing skills. Our labs were designed in collaboration with the NHS. They simulate the experience of working in a UK hospital, and give you the chance to use sophisticated healthcare equipment.

As part of our nursing community in Chelmsford, you’ll learn through lectures, seminars and ‘action learning’ sets – where you’ll reflect with other students on the actions you’ve taken. Our student nurses really benefit from discussing and sharing their experiences in this way.
