As a BSc (Hons) Building Surveying student at ARU, you’ll find yourself working independently and as part of larger built environment teams. This helps you understand where building surveyors ‘fit in’, and it’s great preparation for your future career.

Together, you’ll go on site visits, attend talks given by professional experts, and learn how to manage projects. This puts you in a strong position for employment in this highly interesting and varied field.

Our Building Surveying degree course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), so when you graduate, you can take your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and qualify as a Chartered Surveyor.

On this course you’ll learn through practice, in our Early Childhood Resource and Research Room and through our optional placement and theoretical modules. Placements are optional and individually tailored to enable you to gain experience in a variety of different types of settings.

Whether you decide to go on placement or not, you’ll have access to additional volunteering and work experience as well as the choice to take part in further professional development training opportunities, enrichment trips, research groups and various early childhood and education events.

Throughout your studies you’ll be taught by experts in the field of early childhood, using a variety of teaching methods and interactive technology to promote learning, including group activities, class debates and discussion, lectures and seminar sessions, as well as independent learning and study expectations.

You’ll receive regular feedback and personal tutorial support throughout the course to develop both your academic and professional skills. You’ll also benefit from the research our lecturers are involved in through our Early Childhood Research Group.

Health inequality means that we don’t all start with the same chance in life. The need to recognise public health issues has never been so important.

From interviewing students about drug and alcohol addiction, to creating a campaign about exercise and nutrition in a poor area of the UK, to writing a report to inform a government about a rare disease in a developing country – the diverse nature of public health means that no two days are the same.

It’s a sector that’s brimming with career opportunities.

Public health covers three key areas:

• Health improvement: this includes work to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities by promoting health lifestyle changes. This can include helping people to quit smoking or improve their living conditions; promoting healthy eating, or tackling underlying issues such as poverty and reduced access to healthcare.
• Health protection: this area can cover the safety and quality of the environment, food and water, preventing the spread of communicable disease and managing outbreaks – such as pandemic flu – and addressing the health effects of climate change.
• Healthcare: public health professionals help to make sure that health and care services are fit-for-purpose and accessible to all sectors of the population.

By studying BSc (Hons) Public Health at ARU, you’ll gain practical skills and the confidence to work collaboratively in groups.

Back in the classroom you’ll gain the research and analytical skills to interpret data. We’ve worked with public health stakeholders, including Public Health England, the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) and Health Education England to create our course, and our teaching staff are part of international networks which inform everything we do.

Our BEng (Hons) Electronics and Robotics is designed to put you at the forefront of today’s engineering world.

Placing an emphasis on Industry 4.0 concepts such as digital tools for engineering, the internet of things (IoT), and systematic, project-based approaches, it’ll equip you with skills and knowledge that are in high demand among employers.

Electronics and robotics engineers are required to think originally and critically; work innovatively, creatively and sustainably; and consider the social, commercial, legal and environmental impacts of their work. Throughout the course, you’ll have opportunities to practice these skills, making you well-prepared to enter the workplace when you graduate.You’ll gain experience of every aspect of the development of smart connected electronics and robotics systems today, helping you to discover where your talents and interests lie and determine how you want to use your degree.

Whatever your background is, our course will meet your personal, professional and educational needs through engaging with innovation, research and leadership.

For the blended version of the course, each module starts with a two day workshop to explain the module and expectations. It's also an opportunity to build relationships with peers and staff. Part-time students will do two days of workshops and one module per trimester. Full-time students will do four, one-day workshop and two modules per trimester. The workshops will be in Chelmsford but if numbers are sufficient they can be put on at our Cambridge campus.

The rest of the learning is distance learning through the virtual learning environment. This has been built as a very innovative learning environment which addresses all learning styles.

For distance only students, the workshop will be replicated online through our virtual learning environment.

Each module takes a virtual international journey – the first is the Siberian express travelling from Moscow to China. Students can collect different types of learning materials at each station and the complete tasks, activities and exercises to help develop their learning on each subject area. Students also have access to a blog and a discussion board to post answers and questions with an alert on each one so the distance learning module tutor managing the environment will then be alerted when students have posted. There's also a goods van with study skills material in it.

Be useful. Mechanical engineers design, manufacture, repair or operate the things we need in everyday life. Based in Chelmsford, studying our Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) you’ll use simulation software to come up with solutions to real world engineering problems. Our Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and can ultimately lead to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Our newly redesigned Mechanical Engineering BEng degree course focusses on project based-learning, meaning you’ll apply your theoretical learning from class to a project-based module that runs throughout Year 1. You will gain experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team with other students from mechanical engineering courses, helping to prepare you for working in competitive commercial and industrial environments. Skills in teamwork, management and leadership – along with an integrated approach to engineering – are highly valued by employers.

While studying Mechanical Engineering at ARU, you will develop both your academic and practical skills, becoming an analytical and creative problem-solver, exploring how engineering works in the business context, and how to achieve results within financial constraints. You’ll use testing and measurement equipment, learn how to specify and design electronics subsystems and understand how to use computer-based and mathematical methods to model and analyse mechanical-engineering problems.

As well as the hands-on experience, you’ll benefit from lectures given by visiting engineers, ensuring you’re up-to-date with current methods in industry. You also have the option of doing a year-long placement in industry between years 2 and 3.

Our facilities at ARU include a CAD/CAM centre, industrial-scale CNC milling machine, CNC lathe, rapid prototyping machine, scanning electronic microscope, Instron bi-axial fatigue-testing machine, tensile-testing machine, material-preparation facilities, welding equipment and electronic testing and measuring equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generating and testing facilities.

Like our Mechanical Engineering BEng course, our MEng is accredited by both the IMechE and IET, meaning it's been approved by a professional body as meeting their level of requirements.
