Your Politics & International Relations with English BSc (Hons) will allow you to develop wide-ranging skills of analysis, which you will apply to government policies and literary and nonfiction texts. You’ll compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing where they derive their legitimacy and how they interact with other institutions. You’ll take a course in political theory, questioning not only how these organisations work, but also how thinkers have theorised they ought to work. Through your English minor, you’ll expand your critical reading skills, giving you the relevant conceptual tools, expertise and knowledge to enhance your enjoyment of literature for the rest of your life.

In a world of transborder digital connections, with escalating social activism, fake news, cybercrime and artificial intelligence, digital sovereignty, sustainability and security are at the intersection of the most pressing contemporary 21st Century Politics problems.

Contemporary International Relations (IR) faces two main challenges: the first relates to ecological sustainability and the second to digital spaces. Both challenges pose new power shifts, influences and organisational structures in an increasingly interconnected world. These challenges are often regarded separately, however they are both uniquely complex and multifaceted.

The MSc in Digital Politics and Sustainable Development is an interdisciplinary programme, looking at how these two challenges interact and the unique approaches to tackle them. Drawing on political science, political theory, philosophy, and computer science, you will explore the increasingly urgent phenomena of social activism, fake news, cybercrime, artificial intelligence, and sustainability within a unique and compelling programme.

The English with Art History BA (Hons) will allow you to study the full range of artistic expression. You’ll take courses covering literature from 1550 to the present day, and you’ll explore forms of literature such as political speeches, the plays of Shakespeare, and responses to them.  For your Art History minor, you’ll study different forms of visual art in detail and their aesthetic and cultural contexts. These studies will allow you to make connections between art and the literature you study for your English major.

The Art History major gives you the opportunity to see and interpret moments in history through their architecture and material culture. The course combines cultural surveys with more intense, media-specific subjects including architecture, landscape and painting. In History, you will study the way people have lived, through reflecting on the complex, and often contradictory, information about the past that is available to us now.

You will also study classic philosophical texts from antiquity to the present day, which investigate the nature of the world and how we ought to interact with it.

The central aim of the Philosophy major is to bring clarity and rigour to students’ thinking and to advance their understanding of, and ability to engage with, central questions, arguments, theories, and texts concerning the world and our place within it.

The Creative Writing minor will enable you to express your philosophical judgements in a variety of forms, from short fiction to poetry to scriptwriting, as has been established practice in the history of philosophy.
