In a world of transborder digital connections, with escalating social activism, fake news, cybercrime and artificial intelligence, digital sovereignty, sustainability and security are at the intersection of the most pressing contemporary 21st Century Politics problems.

Contemporary International Relations (IR) faces two main challenges: the first relates to ecological sustainability and the second to digital spaces. Both challenges pose new power shifts, influences and organisational structures in an increasingly interconnected world. These challenges are often regarded separately, however they are both uniquely complex and multifaceted.

The MSc in Digital Politics and Sustainable Development is an interdisciplinary programme, looking at how these two challenges interact and the unique approaches to tackle them. Drawing on political science, political theory, philosophy, and computer science, you will explore the increasingly urgent phenomena of social activism, fake news, cybercrime, artificial intelligence, and sustainability within a unique and compelling programme.

With the Philosophy, Politics & History BA (Hons) at NCH, you can choose one of Politics, Philosophy or History as your major, and will study the other two as joint minors. The central aim of our PPH programme is to increase your understanding of, and ability to engage with, central questions, arguments, and texts in Philosophy, Politics and History, and to provide a lively sense of interrelations between these subjects.

Compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing where they derive their legitimacy and how they interact with other organisations and learn how to draw on complex and often contradictory sources to create a picture of lives once lived, from the Roman Empire to the present.

The Politics & International Relations with History BSc (Hons) will provide a full understanding of how states work and have developed over time. You’ll compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing where they derive their legitimacy and how they interact with other organisations. You’ll take a course in political theory and learn how to draw on complex and often contradictory sources to create a picture of lives once lived, from the Roman Empire to the present.

The Philosophy with Art History BA will help you bring a clarity and rigour to your thinking about topics such as morality, metaphysics, and art. Particularly of interest for you will be the third year philosophy course in Aesthetics – studying the philosophy of beauty and the philosophy of art, ranging from Plato’s claim that we should rid ourselves of all poets to Hegel and Arthur Danto’s assertion that art has ended. You will also, in your minor, study particular artistic media, such as painting, ceramics and architecture.

The Economics with Philosophy BSc will enable you to analyse the world with clarity, precision and rigour. You’ll study how people act, and how we can influence them to act differently. You’ll learn about the factors that dictate the real events and decisions that are taking place in the world today, as well as acquiring the quantitative skills needed to engage with the subject as commonly practised. In the Philosophy minor, you’ll engage with central questions, arguments and theories concerning our place in the world.

The Law with History LLB (Hons) is a Qualifying Law Degree, covering all of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board required areas of study to permit progression onto the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister.

Your Law with History LLB (Hons) will allow you to prepare for your career and follow your passions. In your degree, you will take all of the courses required for a Qualifying Law Degree, preparing you to take the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Your History minor will further develop your skills of evaluating evidence. In acquiring knowledge of the past, you will reflect critically on the complex and often contradictory information about history that is available to us now.

Complement these studies with your Psychology minor, which trains you in the major areas of the contemporary scientific discipline, allowing you to understand how the personality dynamics and behavioural characteristics of key figures through history have played a part in shaping our modern world.

Our curriculum approaches the past in all its guises: economic, political, social, cultural and intellectual history.

You will study a diverse range of subject matters, from the Middle Ages to the modern day. You will study two survey courses; six increasingly focused period-specific courses, which encourage real intellectual depth; and one course reflecting on the nature of the discipline and equipping you with the skills to master it.

By choosing Art History as a minor you will have the opportunity to widen your view of history through the study of cultural artefacts, developing a greater understanding of the people and times that created them.  You will develop critical skills in how to look, to think, and to present your ideas succinctly and persuasively.
