Overview

One of the broadest engineering disciplines, electrical and electronic engineering uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. This course provides full accreditation for the qualification of Chartered Engineer.

Years one and two provide a strong grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, communications, electromagnetics, power electronics and control. You will also take language classes to prepare you for your third year overseas.

The first two years of this course provide a background in mathematical analysis, modelling and scientific computation and their application to engineering. These core topics underpin the advanced material that follows.

As well as gaining first-hand exposure to pioneering research, in your third year, you will have a wide choice of options from across engineering and mathematics to fit your interests.

A major focus of the course is real-world problem solving, spanning many different application areas from robotics and social media to medicine and environmental modelling. Problems come directly from our industrial collaborators or address real challenges in current research. The MA in Philosophy will give you a thorough grounding in the core knowledge and skills required for philosophical research, while also allowing you to pursue your own philosophical interests in depth.

The MA is an exciting programme that provides an opportunity to design a path to match your philosophical interests. Human geography is a dynamic discipline with profound influence on current debates in the social sciences and humanities. Human geographers focus on the relationships between space and society, particularly the interconnection between environment, place and identity; knowledge; globalisation processes; social justice; and a variety of other vital themes relevant to the contemporary world.

This program provides you with a rigorous grounding in social theory and mainstream debates and techniques in human geography. It also offers a thorough training in qualitative and quantitative methods. Options allow for the development of specialisms in historical–cultural themes, postcolonial and decolonial geographies, spatial modelling, and debates surrounding environmental conflict and science and technology.

This joint honours course is offered by the Department of Computer Science and Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and is designed to meet the needs of the computing and electronics industries.

You will understand how to design and build hardware and software for all types of computer systems in order to implement applications ranging from medical equipment and autonomous vehicles to finance systems.

Your first two years cover the foundations of computing and electronics, equipping you to work confidently in software and hardware. Year three includes a major project, either based in industry or industry inspired and undertaken at the University. You can tailor your fourth year to suit your interests by choosing an individual project and optional units.

The MEng course provides full accreditation for the qualification of Chartered Engineer. The first two years are common with the BEng Computer Science and Electronics and transfer between courses is possible until the end of year two subject to satisfactory performance.

This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within geography. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours Geography course, where you will acquire core knowledge in your subject. You will develop a wide range of geographical and scientific skills, gaining an advanced overview of both human and physical geography in year one, and choosing from a wide range of specialist units in later years.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured.

Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

In year four we offer training in more advanced quantitative methods suitable for postgraduate research.

Our teaching philosophy delivers a practical, hands-on and student-centred approach to all aspects of learning. The course will facilitate your journey from school leaver to independent critical thinker and anatomist.

Year one introduces the principles of comparative anatomy and the structure of the major mammalian body systems. Teaching involves some dissection and study of human and animal prosected cadaveric specimens.

Year two covers detailed medical and veterinary anatomy and allows you to specialise in medical or veterinary anatomy by dissection. Units in the second year emphasise clinical relevance and application throughout.

In year three you will follow a seminar-based course in which you will be actively involved in expert-led discussion of the latest anatomical research. This course provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of computer science. There are extensive opportunities to specialise in a range of advanced areas while gaining skills in system development and enterprise. We review our curriculum constantly to ensure it remains at the leading edge.

Core ideas are introduced in years one and two. You will cover the principles of algorithms and programming, covering three key paradigms: imperative, functional and object-oriented.

You will study mathematics and statistics underpinning modern computer science; how a modern computer architecture is organised; concurrent systems and networks; and foundations of human-computer interaction, cybersecurity and theoretical and data-driven computer science.

A key component of year two is the software group project in which you work in a team to develop an application for a real-world client with help from an industrial mentor.

In your final two years you will choose from a wide range of optional units in order to specialise in selected advanced areas of computer science.
