Comparative World Literature studies:

• World literatures in translation and the relationships among those literatures
• The relationship between literature and other fields such as art, music, history, philosophy and theatre.

The Bachelor of Arts in Comparative World Literature has three emphasis options:

• World Literature in Translation
• Cultural Studies
• Language and Literature.

The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design is comprised of 120 semester units. The program prepares designers for professional practice, whose function will be to help shape the products and systems produced by industrial processes. The curriculum includes studies in rapid visualization, aesthetics, materials and processes, presentation techniques, design methodology, product development, human factors, product costing, and financing principles. Students often have an opportunity to work directly with industry professionals through internships or as team members on sponsored projects. Participating companies have included Oakley, Xerox, Unisys, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, NCR, Apple, Chrysler, General Motors, Hitachi, Toyota, Kawasaki, InFocus, Compaq and Nike. Graduates have found positions in a wide variety of industries, including motion picture special effects, medical and dental equipment, computer and microchip technology, small appliances, as well as air, water and land transportation.

This option is designed primarily for those interested in careers that are related to zoology, ecology, and botany. It is particularly appropriate for students who wish to attend veterinary or graduate school, and for those seeking employment in environmental consulting firms, and fish and wildlife agencies. This option requires approximately 80-83 units in the major, of which 43-46 units are in lower division and 37 units are in upper division.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the California State University, Long Beach is dedicated to maintaining a reputation as an outstanding department on the basis of a rigorous curriculum, the quality of our research, and the caliber of our graduates. The department values teaching and research as essential components of the education of our students and seeks to integrate research with teaching at every possible opportunity in the curriculum.

Many of our faculty direct active research programs providing stimulating research projects for students in chemistry, biochemistry, biology and related disciplines. Our faculty are often supported by external research grants, and publications share authorship with undergraduate and graduate students.

The department is housed in two state of the art buildings with a complete range of modern instrumental equipment that is used directly by students in pursuit of their training. Direct hands on use not only provides opportunities for answering research questions, but also provides the opportunity for advanced training with modern instrumentation.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

This program is designed both for students who wish to pursue further graduate study and those seeking a terminal degree. The program seeks to blend theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics and draws from a variety of disciplines.

The Language and Culture Option allows students to take courses both in Linguistics and Anthropology that deal with theory, research, and applications in the area of language study from a cultural/anthropological point of view.

The objectives of this option include: (1) to provide students with theoretical foundations for understanding how employees are motivated to accomplish organizational goals; (2) to develop skills to attract, reward, develop and retain human resources; (3) to develop an understanding of the strategic, theoretical, and practical approaches to human resource management; (4) to develop aspiring leaders with a strong sense of ethics and social responsibility and an awareness of how societal changes can foster organization change. Students are introduced to the HRM functional areas, including training, staffing, compensation/benefits, labor relations, and employment law, as well as softer skills such as leadership, managing workplace diversity, international HRM, conflict, and negotiations.

The HRM Advisory Board: The HRM program is supported by an extensive alumni network active in the HR profession in Southern California. The HRM Advisory Board, made up of some of the region’s top HR professionals, offers the program guidance and support. Board members actively work to fund scholarships, participate as guest speakers in classes, attend networking and student group events, and find career opportunities for students.
