The graduate program in Intercultural Communication allows students to develop advanced foreign language proficiency, to train them to function comfortably and effectively in intercultural situations, and to prepare them for specific career goals through individual courses of study and internships. Students and faculty come from various parts of the world, and participation in the program is itself a significant intercultural experience.

The M.S. program in Applied Molecular Biology (APMB) is an intensive, two semester graduate program that combines state-of-the-art training in the laboratory methods of molecular biology with a set of four lecture courses that provide the theoretical background for the field.

The interdisciplinary Public Policy program, which offers both a master’s and doctoral degree, is designed for highly motivated individuals who wish to pursue advanced graduate studies in public policy and public policy analysis. The student body includes both full-time and part-time students. Most of the courses are offered in the evening to permit students who work to pursue their degrees.

The graduate programs at the Erickson School of Aging Studies provide integrated, interdisciplinary professional training for leaders in the growing longevity economy. Graduates will meet a growing workforce need for leaders with professional education to serve in management positions in public, private, and non-profit/advocacy organizations providing services to older adults.

The Erickson School of Aging Studies’ goal is to prepare graduates to apply this integrated perspective in leadership positions in a broad array of aging services organizations from government agencies/organizations and advocacy/non-profit groups to a variety of positions in the for-profit business arena.

The Department of Physics offers graduate programs leading to the MS and PhD degrees in physics. The Department is located in the 78,000 sq. ft. Physics building (built in 1999), which contains numerous research and teaching labs, offices, classrooms, a machine shop, and a physics library. Research in the UMBC Physics Department is centered in 4 main areas: condensed matter physics, quantum optics and quantum information science, astrophysics, and atmospheric physics. Faculty members are engaged in both theoretical and experimental research in these areas.

The MPS program prepares working professionals in both small and large organizations who have an interest in incorporating entrepreneurial thinking and innovative practices into their workplace or community. The program will also be of great value to those with an interest in starting their own company or driving social change through innovation. Core courses will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental building blocks for driving innovation.

Beyond the core courses, three pathways will allow students to specialize in one of three areas: social entrepreneur, technical entrepreneur and intra entrepreneur.

The Atmospheric Physics (ATPH) graduate program aims to educate future leaders in the physical and Earth sciences. The curriculum is designed to train students with both deep understanding of the fundamental laws of physics that govern weather and climate as well as practical tools and skills in a broad range of applications. The ATPH faculty members involve graduate students in wide-ranging research areas, including the design and fabrication of airborne and satellite borne sensors, active and passive remote sensing techniques, ultraviolet to thermal infrared spectroscopy, light scattering and radiative transfer, atmospheric dynamics, and many others.

UMBC’s Master’s in Professional Studies (M.P.S.): Industrial /Organizational Psychology explores and integrates important topics such as human resource practice, organizational behavioral management, human factors and culminates with a professional capstone experience. Understanding the importance of communication, presentation and critical thinking skills, UMBC’s M.P.S.: Industrial/Organizational Psychology covers the essential techniques and skills necessary for success in this field. Our program enables students to develop a professional portfolio while building strong relationships with faculty practitioners and industry professionals. Based in Rockville, Maryland, at the Universities at Shady Grove, the program offers evening, weekend, and select online courses for busy professionals.

UMBC’s Intermedia and Digital Arts M.F.A. Program is where interdisciplinary artists seek to expand or reinvent their professional practice. The IMDA program is committed to art that poses unique conceptual and social challenges while offering an environment that provides artists a studio, teaching opportunities, courses in emerging methods, contemporary art and theory, engaged faculty, premier visiting artists and high-end research centers that are typical of a research university.

The statistics program is designed for students interested in pursuing an advanced degree and who have earned the equivalent of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mathematics, statistics or in other mathematically oriented disciplines. The doctoral programs provide training suitable for employment in academia, industrial research and development organizations, as well as research-oriented government agencies. The master’s degree programs provide training in applications of mathematics in areas suitable for employment in industry or government agencies and can serve as preparatory steps toward advancing to a Ph.D. program.
