The goal of the program prepares students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds for careers in data science. In the core courses, students will receive a fundamental understanding of data science through classes that highlight machine learning, data analysis and data management. The core courses will also introduce students to ethical and legal implications surrounding data science.

Beyond the core courses, students will take three courses in domain specific pathways developed in collaboration with academic departments across the university. Through these pathways, students will be able to utilize the skills and techniques learned in the core courses within their own field or area of expertise.

UMBC’s Biotechnology curriculum is intended to address changes in the needs of the biotechnology industry through experiential learning. The curriculum provides advanced instruction in the life sciences, along with coursework in regulatory affairs, leadership, management, and financial management in a life science-oriented business.

The graduate program in Applied Sociology prepares students for careers in program development and evaluation, policy analysis, and research in the fields of health, aging, and diversity and gender.

   The Department of Geography and Environmental Systems is at the interface between natural science, social science, public policy, engineering and information technology, with faculty who have background and collaborative relationships in both research and teaching related to all of these areas. The Department offers graduate programs leading to the M.S. degree and Ph.D. degree. Both non-thesis and thesis M.S. options are available. The program has three foci, reflecting the expertise and research interests of our faculty. All three have a common set of core courses; the remainder of each students’ academic program will be selected in consultation with faculty mentors. (1) Environmental Systems, including water resources and earth-surface processes, ecosystem science, and atmospheric processes; (2) Human Geography, with an emphasis on coupled human-natural systems including the impacts of human activities on the environment, the socioeconomic consequences of environmental degradation, and environmental policy; (3) Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing, focusing on training students in the application of geospatial analysis to improve understanding of changing spatial patterns in the natural and human environment. 

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UMBC offers a world-class Ph.D. program in Chemistry. There are 19 Faculty directing state-of-the-art research, in collaboration with 50 graduate students and 15 postdoctoral fellows and research scientists. We are large enough to have cutting-edge internationally recognized research programs as well as outstanding facilities, yet we are sufficiently small so that faculty and students know each other well. Faculty research interests consist of traditional and emerging areas of chemistry and biochemistry and include inorganic and organic synthesis, drug design and delivery, quantum dot fabrication, nanomaterial reactivity, fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging probes and sensors, single-molecule spectroscopy, photochemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy, bioinorganic chemistry, computational chemistry, structural biology, cell biochemistry, microfluidics, 3D bio-printing, and solar energy conversion.

The Master of Arts program in Historical Studies is designed to accommodate a variety of interests and career paths that connect individuals to a deeper knowledge of history. The diverse curriculum meets the needs of students wanting to enter the growing field of Public History, teach at the K-12 level, and those seeking to go on for a doctorate in history and an academic career. The program emphasizes academic and professional training in historiography, historical methods and theory, and current conceptual tools and techniques for organizing and presenting historical evidence.

The Human Services Psychology graduate program’s primary commitment is to train psychologists for research and service in the public sector, placing special emphasis on the problems of inner-city, minority and poor populations, children, youth and the aged.

Human-Centered Computing is the discipline that explores human interaction with information technologies and the use of these technologies to improve lives. The program focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive information technology systems that are both usable and accessible.

The M.A. in Economic Policy Analysis is a joint program offered by the departments of economics and public policy. The course of study combines a multi-disciplinary approach to policy analysis, with focused study on the use of economic tools to analyze policy issues. The core economics courses present the tools of analysis commonly used by economists, such as economic modeling and econometrics.

The interdisciplinary Public Policy program, which offers both a master’s and doctoral degree, is designed for highly motivated individuals who wish to pursue advanced graduate studies in public policy and public policy analysis. The student body includes both full-time and part-time students. Most of the courses are offered in the evening to permit students who work to pursue their degrees.
