The Exercise Science major is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the fitness industry, cardiac rehabilitation, clinically-related health fields, and graduate school. The program has specific courses (APK 4125 Exercise Testing and Prescription, APK 4114C Physiological Basis of Strength Development) that prepare students for certifications such as the ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (NSCA CSCS). The course work precedes a capstone course that allows students to receive valuable work experience just prior to graduating. The University of West Florida’s undergraduate degree program in Exercise Science is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and addresses the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) needed to pass the ACSM Exercise Physiologist-Certified exam. The curriculum is endorsed by the NSCA for meeting their recommended educational guidelines.

The BS in Information Technology provides a firm foundation of coursework, including programming principles, database concepts, end-user support, security, networks and operating systems.  The program emphasizes applied skills, including internship, co-op, research, and capstone experiences that will prepare graduates to enter the Information Technology workforce.

Information Technology Program Educational Objectives

Graduates of the UWF B.S. in Information Technology degree program will be known for their accomplishments in the early stages of their careers and they should:

• Develop information technology solutions to important problems either individually or through interdisciplinary teams within a global and societal context.
• Professionally and ethically, engage in technical or business activity through information technology abilities, communication skills, and knowledge.
• Engage in continuing professional growth through post-graduate education, continuing education, or professional activity.

A B.S. in Health and Physical Education prepares you for positions in teaching, the health and fitness industry, recreation services or for graduate study. We offer two specializations: Fitness and Sport Coaching, and Physical Education Teacher Education.

The Department of Computer Science offers several graduate programs that provide instruction on a variety of modern topics in data analytics, software engineering, parallel and distributed computing, and cybersecurity giving graduates the edge to be highly competitive in today's IT job market.

The department annually awards several scholarships, fellowships, and out-of-state tuition waivers to new and returning students. The B.S.B.A. in Finance prepares students for professional careers in areas such as corporate financial management, financial institutions management, investments, and financial planning. The program also provides the foundation to pursue the designations of Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

The M.S. in Environmental Science provides advanced research and educational opportunities in the earth and environmental sciences. Departmental areas of concentration include coastal science, paleoclimatology, landscape ecology, geographic information science, aquatic biogeochemistry, and soils science. The program includes both thesis and non-thesis tracks. The non-thesis track provides a foundation for employment in the private and public sectors of the environmental fields. In addition, the thesis track prepares students for advanced study leading to the doctoral degree. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a major in Management Information Systems (M.I.S.) emphasizes information as a resource to be managed, planned, and controlled in much the same way as other organizational resources. This program of study presents the concepts and methods of analyzing, designing, planning, and managing simple or complex information systems within an organization. In addition, M.I.S. emphasizes the managerial aspects of information systems by providing a base of business instruction common to the College of Business programs.

The Criminal Justice program focuses on the issues of law, crime, law enforcement, corrections, and the criminal justice system. The program’s primary purpose is to prepare students to assume entry level positions in various criminal justice occupations and to eventually assume administrative responsibilities, to conduct research in the field, or to pursue advanced degrees.

The B.A. in Music and an Outside Field is designed for students who want to major in music while receiving a broad, liberal arts education.  B.A. students will select an outside field (27 credits), which will allow them to either earn a second bachelor's degree or prepare for placement exams for graduate school (Ex. medical and law school).  This curriculum will give students broad experience in liberal arts and sciences and opportunities to develop intellectual skills in analysis and evaluation, as well as competence in written and oral communication while mastering the creativity and discipline required to complete a music degree. The B.A. in Music and an Outside Field prepares students for either graduate school or careers in various music fields with orchestral, chamber music, opera and choral organizations as well as areas such as arts administration and arts education. Students will also have the opportunity to pursue careers in a variety of fields that may be interdisciplinary in nature. Permission to major or minor in music is granted by the department of music and an audition is required.

The program is based heavily on hands-on experiences where you will have the opportunity to utilize a variety of state-of-the-art laboratories, research tools and equipment.

In the Exercise Science specialization, you are prepared to successfully acquire nationally recognized certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

In the Physical Education and Sports Performance specialization, you will learn how to lead individuals in various physical activity settings, including education, sports, fitness, wellness and health. You will examine, evaluate and apply research on skill development and learning in physical education, coaching and physical activity.
