Overview

The Exercise Science major is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the fitness industry, cardiac rehabilitation, clinically-related health fields, and graduate school. The program has specific courses (APK 4125 Exercise Testing and Prescription, APK 4114C Physiological Basis of Strength Development) that prepare students for certifications such as the ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (NSCA CSCS). The course work precedes a capstone course that allows students to receive valuable work experience just prior to graduating. The University of West Florida’s undergraduate degree program in Exercise Science is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and addresses the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) needed to pass the ACSM Exercise Physiologist-Certified exam. Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Our program offers low student-teacher ratios and one-on-one instruction in applied studies that provide the personalized mentoring and guidance needed to achieve professional success. The Dr. Grier Williams School of Music was established in 2020 after receiving the largest cash gift in the history of the University of West Florida. Students in the school of music and members of the Argo Athletic Band now benefit from an endowed scholarship fund in excess of $7 million. This transformative gift has created a new landscape of opportunity for our school, leading to unprecedented growth and innovation across our music curriculum.

What You Will Learn
The Dr. Grier Williams School of Music faculty specialize in a wide array of research, scholarly, and creative activities. These areas include instrumental and vocal performance, conducting, chamber music, jazz studies, opera studies, and K-12 music education methods and pedagogy.

You will gain skills in solo and ensemble performing, instrumental music methods, conducting, classroom management, music literature, music history, and vocal and piano pedagogy.

The University of West Florida is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and has been accredited by NASM since 1971. UWF is also an All-Steinway school. You will have access to three multi-use performing spaces in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, and a wide variety of free arts and cultural events will support and complement the work you do in the classroom.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a major in General Business prepares students for the world of business, which increasingly demands that business graduates have cross functional abilities. Master of Science in Environmental Science (STEM)

The M.S. in Environmental Science provides advanced research and educational opportunities in the earth and environmental sciences. Departmental areas of concentration include coastal science, paleoclimatology, landscape ecology, geographic information science, aquatic biogeochemistry, and soils science. The program includes both thesis and non-thesis tracks. The non-thesis track provides a foundation for employment in the private and public sectors of the environmental fields. In addition, the thesis track prepares students for advanced study leading to the doctoral degree. Public Safety and Legal Studies

Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies

The Legal Studies Program provides students with a broad understanding of basic principles of law and the role and function of the legal system.  While no specific major is prescribed for admission to law school, many pre-law students elect to major in Legal Studies.  The Legal Studies Program, in addition to preparing students for law-related careers, provides a foundation for law school or other graduate education. All of the full-time Legal Studies faculty are attorneys who are graduates of ABA-Approved law schools and are available for law school advising.  Legal Studies students are encouraged to work closely with Legal Studies Advisors in planning their programs. Satisfactory completion of program requirements leads to the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Legal Studies.

Master of Arts in History

Prepare to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly connected world. With a Master in Arts in History from the University of West Florida, you’ll conduct independent research, evaluate popular claims of “historical fact,” identify social patterns and reveal the voices of people from all backgrounds.

Why History at UWF?

Our faculty are passionate about teaching and working with students, something you don't often find at larger institutions. We also have access to a living-learning lab with the UWF Historic Trust and the Digital Humanities Lab on campus. The trust is a non-profit direct support organization managing thirty properties in the Pensacola National Register Historic District, giving you hands-on, real-world experience.

We offer three interdisciplinary specializations: Early American Studies, Public History and Traditional History. Within each track, you will have the opportunity to learn a variety of interdisciplinary skills.

The Department of History awards several scholarships and teaching assistantships to graduate students. All students have numerous opportunities work with faculty in a variety of research areas.
