Journalism
Journalism is changing rapidly in the 21st century, with stories moving across a range of platforms – from television and the web to radio, newspapers and magazines, as well as across social networks like Twitter and Facebook. This means that the budding journalist needs to know not only how to gather facts and write informative stories, but also how to work with audio and video clips, create and use web sites, and be adept at distributing news through social media.

Journalism Majors at ISU are taught this wide range of essential skills. At the same time, they are encouraged to get involved in our own award-wining campus news, entertainment and sports outlets:

• Television station TV-10
• Radio station WZND
• National Public Radio affiliate WGLT
• Campus newspaper The Vidette

The Individualized sequence of the Interdisciplinary Studies major allows a student, with the help of a faculty sponsor, to design a specialized program of study not otherwise offered by the University. This is intended for the student whose specific interests cannot be accommodated within existing programs.

Some topics chosen by students include Classical Civilization, Three Dimensional Design, and International Public Relations. The Individualized sequence is typically a second or auxiliary major but may be proposed as a primary major.

The Applied Community and Economic Development (ACED) sequence is an interdisciplinary program that enables those who are passionate about social change through service to take their careers to the next level. The sequence is designed for returned Peace Corps Volunteers and students with other development experiences (e.g., AmeriCorps, nonprofit work). The Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development coordinates these programs for Fellows, who spend an intense year on campus followed by 11-month paid professional practice. ACED sequence students have a graduate assistantship in the fall and spring semesters on campus prior to field work. Students pursuing this sequence receive a solid and relevant educational opportunity to pursue careers in community and economic development in the United States and around the world.

Music - Music Composition
The Master of Music in Composition prepares student to build their portfolio in preparation to pursue a Ph.D.Entering master's students typically have an undergraduate degree in Composition and have a varied portfolio of several works for different types of ensembles or media.
Opportunities for composition students include:

• RED NOTE New Music Festival, a week of new music events by visiting
• composers and ensembles from around the country
• Exclusive reading sessions for ISU composition students during RED NOTE from nationally prominent ensembles.
• Annual large ensemble readings with both the Illinois State University Wind Symphony and
• the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra with the opportunity for select pieces to be chosen for performance.
• Chamber concerts of new student works each semester.
• Private lessons with faculty and nationally recognized guest composers.
• Frequent performances by students, faculty, and guest artists. Recent guest performers have included the Boston Brass, the Jupiter String Quartet, and violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

Elementary Education
The Elementary Teacher Education program at Illinois State will prepare you for a professional educator's license to teach grades 1-6. The program is recognized as a model of standards-based and performance-based teacher education.

Throughout your coursework, you will gain the professional knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to become a highly effective elementary classroom teacher and informed decision-maker about elementary curriculum and instruction.

Physics - Computational Physics
Computational physicists use powerful computers to solve complex programs that once seemed impossible.

Professionals are valuable in both research and industry. They have a broad knowledge of physics, computer science, math, and theory. They use their expertise to explore and model physical phenomena, like quarks, black holes, and weather.

Our program gives you a solid background in physics and computation. You’ll learn programming languages and computing techniques to solve challenges in physics. Many students in this program choose to complete a double degree in Computational Physics and Physics.

The School of Biological Sciences has both a Ph.D. program and a master's degree program in which students can perform thesis research on bioenergy-related projects.

For students interested in taking the master's degree track, the School of Biological Sciences offers an M.S. sequence in Bioenergy Sciences, which provides students with the background to conduct thesis research focusing on questions related to biological and/or environmental aspects of using/engineering plants and microbes for the production of bio-based fuels. Ultimately, students will be prepared for pursuing higher degrees or entering professions related to bioenergy.

Theatre Teacher Education
The Theatre Teacher Education sequence at Illinois State University is dedicated to preparing highly qualified teachers/artists to meet the challenges of education in the secondary school system.

Illinois State University is recognized nationally as the second largest producer of teachers among institutions certified by the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. Nearly one of every seven teachers in Illinois public school classrooms holds a degree from Illinois State.

Accounting - Career Specialty
The Accounting - Career Specialty sequence allows accounting majors to design an individualized plan of study that meets their career goals. In addition to the required accounting courses, students complete 12 hours in a specialized area with advice and approval of the accounting academic advisor and the department chair.

Chemistry Teacher Education
Illinois State's rate of teacher graduation places it among the Top 10 educators of teachers in the nation. Nearly 1 of every 7 teachers in the classrooms of Illinois' public schools holds a degree from Illinois State University. Approximately one-half of all secondary school teachers in downstate Illinois currently hold teaching degrees from Illinois State.

The demand for chemistry teachers is great in both Illinois and across the nation. We need more beginning chemistry teachers over the next 10 years than teacher education programs can currently produce. Illinois State's Chemistry Teacher Education program is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The Department of Chemistry is one of the nation's top producers of degrees certified by the American Chemical Society.
