Nearly half a billion people call this region home, and yet the cultures and politics remain a mystery to the West. Enhance your knowledge of this integral part of the world. Middle East and North African Studies employs an interdisciplinary approach to learning about all aspects of this region. The Bachelor of Arts focuses on instruction in the principal languages of the area (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew) and includes coursework in religion, political science, history, literature, geography, sociology, archaeology, linguistics and architecture. Students seek degrees in this department out of a genuine interest in this part of the world, often on a professional path to government service, academics, a position in international business or as preparation for advanced study in this or other fields.

Learning Outcomes

• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to identify the major historical periods, figures, and movements that have shaped the Middle East and North Africa from 600 C.E. to the present.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to compare and contrast the various social, cultural, religious, geographic and linguistic milieus of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to critically evaluate popular, political and/or media discussions of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to analyze and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources in order to develop and write a research paper.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to achieve proficiency at the intermediate level in one of the languages of the Middle East and North Africa (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish). Communicative proficiency is defined in accordance with the Standards for foreign language learning as developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These are further analyzed below: i. To communicate in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) languages, both orally and in writing, by engaging in interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication activities (Communication). ii. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the MENA cultures through language activities such as written essays and oral presentations on cultural topics (Culture). iii. To make meaningful cross-cultural comparisons between two or more of the MENA cultures (Comparisons).

If you have a mind for data and analysis and want to use it to help others, consider majoring in Public Health with a Quantitative Methods in Public Health emphasis. The public health field always has a need for analytical minds for tracking and prevention of disease. The University of Arizona's Bachelor of Science with a major in Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. Students pursuing the Quantitative Methods in Public Health emphasis take courses on the acquisition, assessment, analysis, management and communication of health data. They also study health research and epidemiology. In addition, undergraduates complement their coursework with an internship that provides them with professional public health experience in their area of interest.

Students earning the Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Cello emphasis take courses at the Fred Fox School of Music, which ranks among the country's foremost institutions of higher education in music. Classes include both one-on-one instruction and collaboration in groups. The University of Arizona has offered instruction in music since the late 1800s. Today, its faculty comprises some of the leading artists and performers in the music world. The school presents more than 300 recitals every year, and performing ensembles tour throughout the country. Pharmaceutical sciences are the foundation of new drug design, development and delivery. Students in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program learn to apply the scientific method to address gaps in knowledge while also learning about governmental regulations of the drug development process, chemical-biological interactions of current drugs, the discovery of new drugs, and the techniques and tools in use by the pharmaceutical sciences industry. Political science is the study of government, public policy and the political behavior of individuals and groups. The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science program helps students cultivate clear and strong communication skills (writing, argumentation and presentation) as well as analytical abilities. Students examine the foundations of political science: theory, processes, principles, institutions, law, policy, international relations, foreign affairs, and ideas and methods. Students are encouraged to pursue opportunities outside of the classroom, such as internships at nonprofit organizations and government agencies, including the Arizona Legislature, the Arizona Superior Court and politicians' campaigns.

Explore the foundations of criminal justice ?thoroughly examining critical topics such as mental health law, youth in the justice system, public policy and national security. Criminal Justice Studies touches on all factors related to crime, the law and the justice system. Coursework introduces students to police, court and corrections operations; crime and public policy; juvenile justice; mental health law; white-collar crime; national security; and intelligence policies. Sponsored by the Rombach Institute on Crime, Delinquency and Corrections, this Bachelor of Science program helps students develop the ability to think critically about criminal justice issues, a necessity in an increasingly complex and politicized society. With its own recording studio and a host of performance ensembles, the Fred Fox School of Music is one of the highest-ranked in the nation. Students seeking their Bachelor of Music in Performance with a String Bass emphasis take 89 units of music courses. In addition to choosing electives, students satisfy core classes in music literature, music history, pedagogy, orchestration, conducting, piano and applied lessons. As part of the requirements, they audition for placement in a large conducted ensemble, where they'll have the opportunity to perform with other high-caliber student musicians.
