Students within the Global & Multicultural Studies program at Montana State combine the traditional foundation of a broad-based liberal arts education with in-depth study of international and American cultural, ethnic and gender issues that span a wide range of disciplines. As part of the Liberal Studies department, Global & Multicultural Studies students take a series of integrative seminars designed to provide a sense of academic community and improve their critical thinking and communication skills, all while obtaining a better understanding of the factual knowledge and theoretical foundations of the subjects they’re studying.

Housed within the Civil Engineering department at Montana State, the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering is intended to address the demand for classically trained engineers with focus on environmental, municipal and industrial processes and strengths in water chemistry, fluid mechanics and hydraulics. Students learn to work with the environment, not against it, preserving and protecting resources while providing for the structural needs of society.

In the Sustainable Food Systems graduate program at Montana State, candidates dig further into special topics on sustainability and the food industry to better understand the relation between food systems and public health. Sustainable Food Systems graduate student projects can potentially cover a broad range of topics, including but not limited to food system education and public awareness, how local food systems can localize diets, institutional purchasing of local foods, food policies, community supported agriculture, food processing and distribution, community food security, community-based food and nutrition assistance and more. Additionally, students are able to tailor the program to their specific interests by taking coursework connected to health promotion and education, political science, economics, business, Native American Studies, agriculture and food science.

Graduate students in the Biochemistry program at Montana State conduct research in a highly collaborative department, with interdisciplinary research opportunities available on campus as well as abroad. Montana State’s American Studies undergraduate program provides world-class training for students who are seeking a broad understanding of American culture. Integrated Lens-Based Media students at Montana State are immersed in an intensive, interdisciplinary course of study in both cinematic and photographic media. The Integrated Lens-Based Media program combines aspects of the Film and Photography programs, allowing students to explore aspects of filmmaking and photography in their art practice. Under the mentorship of two advisors – one filmmaker and one photographer – students in the program design a customized curriculum that culminates in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary capstone project that will prepare them to pursue a career as a professional artist or further study in graduate school.

In the Management program at Montana State, students actively practice the critical problem-solving and decision-making skills that will serve in the workforce. Whether networking through the Management & HR Club or practicing a start-up pitch at the Jabs Entrepreneurship Center, Management students have a breath of resources at their fingertips to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom into the real world. With the skills gained in the Management track, students are prepared to step into a variety of roles such as analysts, managers, human resources specialists, entrepreneurship and more.

Building on an existing foundation of knowledge, students within the Master of Professional Accountancy Program (MPAc) at Montana State will obtain further skills in the practice and theory of financial accounting, auditing, taxation, law, and other business and professional areas. By introducing students to the research methods and professional resources used by accountants in the field, graduates will be prepared for long-term career success in the public and private sector.

Students in the Studio Arts program at Montana State begin their undergraduate artistic journey with Foundations courses, which aim to introduce students to the design thinking and visual literacy skills needed for the rest of their years in the program. From there, Studio Arts students have the opportunity to focus their creative personal vision in one of six areas of study: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture + extended media, metalsmithing or ceramics.
