Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with mathematical methods that find use in science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge. The term "applied mathematics" also describes the professional specialty in which mathematicians work on practical problems by formulating and studying mathematical models. In the past, practical applications have motivated the development of mathematical theories, which then became the subject of study in pure mathematics where abstract concepts are studied for their own sake. The activity of applied mathematics is thus intimately connected with research in pure mathematics.

The curriculum leading to this degree allows students to gain comprehensive understanding of the relationships between the structure and properties of materials. Courses offer students a broad foundation in chemistry, physics and mathematics. Within the curriculum are classes and labs covering metals, ceramics, polymers and the design and selection of those materials. Today’s consumers want the news in every form—on their phone, in a podcast, through social media, on television. With a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, you’ll learn how to research and report news and information across all platforms, both digital and traditional. You can specialize in broadcast, community, digital technology, entrepreneurial/business, health and science, investigative, magazine, sports, or visual journalism. And you’ll receive additional hands-on practical experience when you work at the student newspaper, television station, radio station, magazine, or yearbook.

Students will develop demonstrated capabilities in core chemical engineering topics including material and energy balances, thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, heat, mass and momentum transfer, chemical reaction engineering, continuous and stagewise separation operations, process dynamics, statistics and control. The curriculum ranges from elementary design principles in material and energy balances to the capstone senior process design and process control sequence by employing advanced computer process and control simulators and experimental control systems.

The Master of Science in Data Science and Engineering program, offered on campus and online, prepares students to pursue careers in data science and engineering, where valuable insights are derived from massive amounts of raw data. On-campus students will be able to complete this graduate program in one to two years, while online students typically have up to six years to complete their coursework. This program blends graduate?level courses in core topics like data mining, machine learning, and statistical learning. The program also offers a wide variety of electives in addition to a required capstone experience, in which students apply their knowledge and skills to a real?world application scenario.

There are two formal options in the program: the data engineering option, administered by the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, and the data science option, managed by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Both options are now available to online students.
