Each food product on the grocery store shelves was conceptualized, developed and manufactured by a team of food scientists. The ever-changing food industry must meet the demands of consumers, meet dietary guidelines for health maintenance and still be profitable for manufacturers.

To accomplish these objectives, food scientists use their scientific training within the multi-billion dollar food industry. Food Science graduates are prepared to enter many areas of the food industry, including quality control, research and development, and management.

As a student in food science, you’ll have the opportunities to be a part of the food industry through internships and other problem-solving experiences linked directly to industry needs and issues. You’ll also have access to undergraduate research experiences that will prepare you for work on graduate or professional degrees.

What you will study
The food science major blends a strong foundation in the basic sciences with the expertise of faculty from the departments of animal sciences, poultry science, and biosystems engineering.

Food science is a multidisciplinary scientific field where concepts of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, engineering and nutrition are utilized to develop and produce foods that are safe, palatable, healthy and economical.

After completing coursework in the basic sciences, you’ll take specialized courses in food chemistry, food analysis, food engineering, food microbiology, processing and product development. An internship or other approved practical experience is required for the food science major and you may also participate in a variety of undergraduate research opportunities as a student in food science.

Your studies as a Biological and Agricultural Technology Management (BATMan or BATM) major at Auburn will be a combination of science, technological systems, and business courses.

With 70 percent increase in global demand for healthy food, clean water and affordable energy in a healthy environment due to world population that is expected to reach over 9 billion by 2050, BATM graduates will be in high demand to develop, operate, support and spread technologies to support agricultural and biological systems that produce and provide these essentials of life. BATM graduates will also acquire skills that are transferable to other sectors that rely heavily on technology such as automotive and manufacturing industries.

What you’ll Study
Students will take a variety of courses in technology, science and management that will enable them to be practical problem solvers, and be able to manage and develop solutions to the technological challenges of the increasingly complex agricultural and biological systems of the 21st century.

The curriculum is also designed such that students can simultaneously obtain a minor in Agronomy and Soils, Stewardship-based Agriculture, Agribusiness, Information Systems Management, Technical and Professional Communication, Poultry Science or Business Analytics.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre performance is an extension of our BA in theatre and offers studio acting, voice, and movement training with professional actors. There are also numerous opportunities to participate in a wide variety of production experiences. You’ll audition for the program in the spring of your sophomore year, and begin this rigorous course of study in the fall of your junior year. You’ll engage in scene study, text analysis, voice, speech, dialects, mask work, makeup, on-camera training, and audition workshops with professional actors and producers.

The law and justice major is designed to better prepare students for law school by using an interdisciplinary approach, offering courses in political science, philosophy, communication and journalism.

The Department of Physics has a low ratio of faculty members to physics majors which means each student receives individual attention usually only available at much smaller schools. As an undergraduate physics major, you can take courses on sub-atomic particles, the origins of the universe, super-cooled superconductivity, and superheated plasmas.

Physics majors are exposed to faculty performing world-class research in several areas and many undergraduates research physics questions throughout the year. Several features of the AU physics program make it ideal for an undergraduate physics education. Physics majors are the science team leaders in a national effort to send student-built satellites to space.

Our School of Fisheries, Aquaculture & Aquatic Sciences is the one of the world’s premier warm-water fisheries programs. As a student majoring in fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic sciences, you’ll receive a strong foundation in chemistry, mathematics and biology while learning how to apply these subjects to managing fresh and saltwater aquatic resources.

This degree will equip you with an understanding of the principles used in solving problems with aquatic resources and the awareness to provide safe, reliable food through aquaculture production. Graduates of this program are also prepared for veterinary medicine and other professional and graduate schools.

The Master of Applied Mathematics program at Auburn University offers flexibility, expert faculty, and mentorship opportunities. The Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) prepares undergraduate students for a variety of exciting and challenging career opportunities including: preschool teaching; administering programs for young children, adolescents, and adults; parent education; mental health services; child advocacy; and cooperative extension. Senior HDFS interns have been placed in outstanding work settings throughout the United States such as Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, the Children's Television Workshop/Sesame Street, Walt Disney World, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Interns have also been placed in many local schools, counseling centers, social service agencies, court systems, and assisted living facilities for seniors.

With a growing emphasis on preventative health care and interest in health, wellness and improved quality of life among consumers and employers, Auburn University's degree option in Nutrition and Wellness is designed to prepare students for successful career entry into the broad health and wellness professions. The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering is oriented toward engineering design and practice. Some of the specialties students will study include surface science, biochemical engineering, catalysis, pulp and paper engineering, environmental engineering, waste conversion, computer-aided process design and simulation, novel bioseparations systems, chemical kinetics, and reactor design.
