Each food product on the grocery store shelves was conceptualized, developed and manufactured by a team of food scientists. The ever-changing food industry must meet the demands of consumers, meet dietary guidelines for health maintenance and still be profitable for manufacturers.

To accomplish these objectives, food scientists use their scientific training within the multi-billion dollar food industry. Food Science graduates are prepared to enter many areas of the food industry, including quality control, research and development, and management.

As a student in food science, you’ll have the opportunities to be a part of the food industry through internships and other problem-solving experiences linked directly to industry needs and issues. You’ll also have access to undergraduate research experiences that will prepare you for work on graduate or professional degrees.

What you will study
The food science major blends a strong foundation in the basic sciences with the expertise of faculty from the departments of animal sciences, poultry science, and biosystems engineering.

Food science is a multidisciplinary scientific field where concepts of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, engineering and nutrition are utilized to develop and produce foods that are safe, palatable, healthy and economical.

After completing coursework in the basic sciences, you’ll take specialized courses in food chemistry, food analysis, food engineering, food microbiology, processing and product development. An internship or other approved practical experience is required for the food science major and you may also participate in a variety of undergraduate research opportunities as a student in food science.

If you have multiple interests, are highly engaged, and learn best by doing, then an interdisciplinary studies degree may be for you. Interdisciplinary studies trains you to answer a question, solve a problem, or address a topic that is too broad or complex to be dealt with adequately by a single discipline.

Auburn's anthropology program features four sub-fields: sociocultural anthropology (how people in different places live and understand the world around them), archaeology (material evidence of how societies change over time), biological anthropology (human variation, evolution, and adaptation to the environment), and linguistics (relationship between language and culture). With a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology, you'll be able to apply your knowledge to global issues outside of the classroom in areas such as social and environmental policy, medical anthropology, forensic anthropology, museum studies, cultural resource management, and historic preservation. Each of the four subfields of anthropology can be applied to solve real world problems.

Our forestry program provides students with the knowledge to sustain and manage the diverse forest resources that make up local and regional landscapes.  For a hands-on introduction to field work,  students in the forestry program spend the summer between their second and third years at our summer practicum program held at the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center outside Andalusia, Alabama.

The objectives of the forestry curriculum are to provide: 1) the fundamental knowledge regarding the resources that professional foresters typically manage and the multiple uses, sustaining, and conservation of those resources; 2) a general education integrating physical, social and biological sciences to prepare the forester for the role as steward of public and private forest resources; and 3) training and skills needed for initial forestry employment, as well as for advancement to higher levels of managerial responsibility. The forestry degree is appropriate for students who seek employment in any aspect of forest resource management, from forest industry lands where timber production is typically the primary objective, to private non-industrial properties where multiple-use predominates, to public lands where recreation or environmental protection is often paramount. The curriculum emphasizes biological, ecological, environmental, social, economic, and ethical considerations in forest management.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) at Auburn University has over 50 professors representing diverse areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. Many of the general undergraduate classes are capped at under 30 students, meaning they are able to offer students personal attention and close contact with faculty. The program in Mathematics provides students with a general background in mathematics preparing them for graduate studies in mathematics or careers that require mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills. It is well suited for students who wish to pursue a career in teaching mathematics in a university/college, or who desire more flexibility or emphasis in liberal arts.

Social workers aim to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities with a particular focus on advocating with and on behalf of individuals who are vulnerable and oppressed.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in social work is a dynamic degree program that equips you with the professional knowledge, values, and skills to engage in generalist social work practice across social work settings. You'll engage in practicums and internships to gain real-world experience. You'll learn from professors who have both research and clinical backgrounds in mental health, children and families, gerontology, policy analysis, disabilities, crisis management, and homelessness.

Computer engineering emphasizes design, implementation and maintenance of hardware and software components of modern computing systems, computer-controlled equipment, and networks of intelligent devices.

Environmental concerns and evolving technologies are moving companies toward the use of sustainable forest biomaterial for everything from packaging, cosmetics, and automobiles to appliances, pharmaceuticals, and commercial construction. These developments are fueling an increased demand for professionals with expertise in biomass production, operational logistics, and conversion processes of products and packaging.

The Master of Science in CSSE provides both online and on-campus students an opportunity for advanced learning and creative research. Students will further their education through a balanced program in both instruction and research with the goal of achieving excellence in the field of computer science and software engineering. On-campus students may choose the thesis or non-thesis option. Online students can choose a non-thesis (courses only) or, with special permission from the department, the thesis option. They will be able to specialize in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer networks, cybersecurity, databases and data science, human/computer interaction and machine learning.

Biosystems engineers work to ensure our communities have safe and plentiful food to eat, pure water to drink, clean fuel and energy sources, and a safe, healthy environment in which to live. As a student in biosystems engineering, you’ll use principles of engineering and biology to solve problems in biological systems, agriculture, natural resources and the environment.

Auburn offers the only accredited biosystems engineering program in Alabama, and the forest engineering option is the only one of its kind in the South.
