History majors at the University of Mississippi take a range of courses across American and European history as well as history of other regions. They take at least one advanced research course where they utilize primary resources to address questions of historical importance.

The study of history explores our shared and diverse past, providing an essential context and perspective on the contemporary world. Studying history enhances a student's ability to think and reason, to communicate effectively, and to organize systematically, evaluate, and interpret information. These are essential skills demanded of today's young professionals and graduate students.

The Master of Science in food and nutrition services degree prepares students for doctoral studies in nutrition, food service management, or hospitality management for postsecondary teaching positions, or for careers in established or emerging clinical or industrial settings. The program is designed to provide students with a broad background in nutrition, food service management, or hospitality management; development of necessary analytical skills; and exposure to current nutrition, food service management, and hospitality management research.

Linguistics majors at the University of Mississippi learn the layers of intertwined systems of language (sound, meaning, organization and context) and study phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. They explore the relationship between language and social factors such as region, ethnicity, gender, and identity; and how language is acquired and changes over time.

The study of linguistics, often referred to as the "science of language," provides students with an understanding of the sound systems, words, and sentence structures of language, both individually and comparatively.

Students may earn a degree in economics at the University of Mississippi three different ways: the Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in economics, the Bachelor of Arts in economics, and the new, more technical Bachelor of Science in economics. The quantitative B.S. degree is more suitable for those who wish to prepare for graduate study in economics. Students take advanced mathematics, introductory and advanced micro and macro economics, econometrics, and mathematical economics.

The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases:

• Performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice;
• Music education;
• Choral conducting;
• Musicology;
• Music theory;
• Ethnomusicology;
• Collaborative piano.

Emphasis - Musicology
The M.M. degree with an emphasis in musicology is an advanced professional degree designed to give the student a broad research background while also providing a 24-credit specialization. A reading knowledge of one foreign language and a thesis are required.

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is a road map that leads to a professional engineering degree that emphasizes the concepts needed to properly design, construct, and maintain naturally and/or physically built systems such as highways, bridges, water treatment plants & buildings.

Civil engineers use scientific knowledge and hands-on creativity to solve 21st-century problems: designing for sustainability, safely constructing the built environment, maintaining our aging infrastructure systems, and providing service worldwide to people in great need.

With a civil engineering degree, you could be involved in the design, construction or operation of many critical facilities. This could be anything from highways to high-rise buildings, from bridges to hospitals and airports – just to name a few.

Our civil engineering program will give you the foundation for practice and advanced study in:

• Geotechnical Engineering – looking at the mechanics of minerals, rocks, soil and water to determine what’s required for man-made structures built on or around them.
• Structural Engineering – making sure structures are designed and built to be safe and resilient to environmental stresses.
• Transportation and Construction Management – using engineering skills to oversee transportation and other large projects, in terms of schedule, cost, safety, quality, function and scope.
• Environmental and Water Resources Engineering – creating solutions to environmental problems such as waste and pollution, and ensuring access to clean water for human use.

Economics is the study of the allocation of resources. Using mathematical and statistical models, economists consider how resources such as labor, land, money, and technology are distributed.  Economics majors gain a broad understanding of the field of economics as well as skills in statistics, mathematics, organization, research methodology, and verbal and written communication.

Economics provides a broad and systematic way of thinking about social, financial, and business problems. The B.A. in economics prepares a graduate for many positions in business and government. Some positions are economic analyst, statistician, and research assistant.

The M.A. in mathematics is designed (1) to prepare students for the teaching of mathematics, particularly in high schools and community colleges, (2) to prepare students for nonteaching professions or vocations, such as civil service, actuarial work, or statistical work, in which mathematics plays a principal part, or (3) for students who wish to supplement study in other fields with suitable courses in mathematics.

The Master of Taxation & Data Analytics program offers specialization in both taxation and data analytics. Students in this program are given many opportunities to gain hands-on experience in data analytics and the latest relevant technologies. The program includes five accountancy and taxation courses, three data analytics courses, one taxation elective, and one accountancy elective.
