The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics Degree encapsulates a program of undergraduate study that prepares students for further specialization in mathematics, such as through a PhD or Master's program in mathematics or mathematics education. In contrast, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is a course of study that investigates mathematics as a component of a broader liberal arts education. As such, the BA prepares a student to think critically and experience the subject without the explicit intent of further specialization. While the BA has a focus on breadth of knowledge, the BS in Mathematics seeks to provide both depth and breadth. The BS in Mathematics is meant to ensure that students acquire a solid foundation and depth of knowledge in at least three of the areas of analysis, algebra, discrete mathematics, or mathematical research. The degree requires from 51 to 52 credit hours of course work.

Combining tradition and innovation, the major in English gives students an understanding of imaginative and cultural processes and products that is broad, deep, and contextually rich. Courses in English help students develop skills and knowledge necessary for an examined life, a successful career, and responsible membership in a global society.

This past fall, he was selected as a Fellow with the US Government's Presidential Management Fellowship through the Executive Office of the President's Office of Personnel Management. Starting in July, Peter will begin his Federal Appointment at the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), as a Health Policy and Legislative Analyst, working with the US Congress and other Federal Agencies on Federal Health Policy Implementation and Evaluation. At Geneseo, Peter was actively involved in the many various activities throughout both the Anthropology and Biology Departments including Lambda Alpha Honor Society, was a member of the SUNY Geneseo Chamber Singers and Festival Choir, and served as a Teaching Assistant for both Dr. Barb Welker and Dr. Kristi Krumrine. Peter has also continued to serve as a Research Assistant to Kristi since the beginning of her fieldwork in Coba, Mexico in 2015. Peter is so proud to be a Geneseo Grad, most importantly from the Anthro Department, and credits both Kristi and the late Dr. Rosemarie Chierici for their incredible mentorship and for encouraging him to embark on the path he is on today. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Black Studies is designed for students who want to take an interdisciplinary approach to their education. By working closely with faculty advisors, students in this major design an individualized program of courses, and internship experiences.

The minor in Africana Studies is designed to provide interdisciplinary approaches to the experiences of peoples of African descent in Africa, in the Americas, and throughout the African diaspora. The minor will enable Geneseo students not only to broaden their perception of cultural diversity but to gain a deeper understanding of cultures. Students will draw knowledge from the humanities, the social sciences, the arts, and other fields of learning that will prepare them to begin to face some of the challenges of "living in an increasingly global and diverse world

Students who study philosophy confront theoretical and practical questions about themselves, their social world, and the fundamental nature of reality. Engaging in philosophical thinking is essential to a superior liberal arts education. It enriches thought, understanding, and imagination.

Geneseo is a great place to study philosophy; the department is open and friendly, class sizes are small, and majors are encouraged to combine philosophy with other majors.

The philosophy major meets the needs and interests of students who:

• Plan graduate study & teaching in the field
• Intend to go to law school
• Seek preparation for work in government, business, social service, or any field in which critical thinking is valued, and
• Simply want to think deeply about fundamental life-questions and assumptions.

Bachelor of Arts Students in the Physics B.A. program are well-prepared for graduate study in physics, engineering, and other technical fields.  Many students in this program also enter the workforce immediately after graduation in commercial and/or industrial jobs.  The Physics B.A. degree is required  for students pursuing Certification in Secondary Education (7-12): Physics and General Science.

The degree is interdepartmental, stressing basic sciences and analytical skills. Extensive laboratory experience is acquired, making use of advanced instrumentation and techniques. Many students do research projects, either over the summer or in directed studies throughout the school year. Students are also given the opportunity to be tutors or teaching assistants in the chemistry or biology departments, thereby gaining additional useful experience. Graduates are well prepared for employment or further study in the fields of Biochemistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology. Alumni have also entered fields of Bioinformatics, Immunology, Bioorganic Chemistry, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Pharmacology, Education, and Biochemical Engineering. The program is designed to give students the flexibility to choose electives that most closely mirror their interests.

We believe that the Biochemistry program at Geneseo is truly special.  On national assessment exams, our graduates perform well and several students have scored in the 90th percentile or above.  Our graduates routinely sought-after by graduate schools and employers. We believe that Geneseo students do well partly because of the interaction Geneseo students have with professors and with each other. Participants take many classes together and study together in the Biology and Chemistry buildings, so a great deal of camaraderie develops among the biochemistry majors. The atmosphere is very supportive. Another plus is that the students work with faculty on their own research projects. Students obtain hands-on experience with sophisticated equipment, much of which is usually found only in graduate school, and they are encouraged to present their work at local or national meetings/symposia.

The Economics major combines the breadth, analytical development, and flexibility of a liberal arts degree with the theoretical, quantitative, and empirical foundation of economics. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking as well as analytical and communication skills. Geneseo economics graduates enter a wide array of positions in both the public and private sectors, or alternatively, gain admission to graduate programs in a variety of fields. Students frequently combine the economics major with internships, study abroad, independent research, and related study in fields such as mathematics or other social sciences.

With the option of pursuing a B.A. in geology, geochemistry, or geophysics, students at SUNY Geneseo are exposed to challenging and rewarding curriculum taught by accomplished faculty with a broad range of expertise.
