Welcome to the home page of the Sociology Department at SUNY Geneseo. Please use this page to learn more about our major and related minors, meet our faculty, review our classes and internship and study abroad programs, and consider graduate study and careers related to Sociology. We emphasize scientific and humanistic approaches to exploring economic and political institutions, culture, media, family, urban life, families, crime, and other aspects of social life. Our graduates pursue graduate study in law, social work, sociology, criminology, community planning, and other fields or move directly into careers including social and human services, criminal justice, and business.

Students who study philosophy confront theoretical and practical questions about themselves, their social world, and the fundamental nature of reality. Engaging in philosophical thinking is essential to a superior liberal arts education. It enriches thought, understanding, and imagination.

Geneseo is a great place to study philosophy; the department is open and friendly, class sizes are small, and majors are encouraged to combine philosophy with other majors.

The philosophy major meets the needs and interests of students who:

• Plan graduate study & teaching in the field
• Intend to go to law school
• Seek preparation for work in government, business, social service, or any field in which critical thinking is valued, and
• Simply want to think deeply about fundamental life-questions and assumptions.

Bachelor of Arts Students in the Physics B.A. program are well-prepared for graduate study in physics, engineering, and other technical fields.  Many students in this program also enter the workforce immediately after graduation in commercial and/or industrial jobs.  The Physics B.A. degree is required  for students pursuing Certification in Secondary Education (7-12): Physics and General Science.

The Biophysics program began in the early 1990's to prepare students for graduate programs at the interface of biology and physics. The program requirements expose students to basic techniques in biology, physics, and mathematics. Students completing this program typically go on to graduate programs in biology, physics, and medical.

school.Biophysics is a broadly and variably defined topic. All definitions are subject to definer bias. Perhaps the best way for us to deal with this field is to say that it's anything that includes overlap between the fields of biology and physics. The scale for these interactions range from the very small (e.g., biochemical dynamics) to the large (e.g., do elephants actually run?). SUNY Geneseo's Department of Art History is housed in Brodie Hall. The hall was designed by architect Edgar Tafel, a noted designer of the second wave of American modernist architects who followed the innovative designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Brodie Hall houses the Departments of Art History, Theater and Dance, and Music into an integrated Arts area that combines creative expression with scholarship.

The Department of Art History provides students with the opportunity to explore the history of art as undergraduate scholars interested in careers in the Arts. The Department offers linked programs in Art History (Major/Minor), Museum Studies (Minor) and an Education Concentration (School of Education), while encouraging students to develop their knowledge of Business practices (School of Business), through connected coursework.

The mission of the Biology program at Geneseo is to provide students with a broad background in biology, which can be used as a solid foundation for various careers in the biological sciences and medicine. Students in the program gain an understanding of the basic principles of genetics, ecology, evolution, cell biology, anatomy and physiology. Students also gain skills in scientific decision-making, and in presenting scientific research in oral and written formats.
