Bachelor of Science in National Security with General Concentration

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate work, which may include an internship in national security. Transfer credit from other institutions may be permitted subject to the Graduate School policy on transfer credit detailed elsewhere in this catalog.

Students in the program are required to complete 18 credits of core courses and 18 credits of general electives.  Students must complete a capstone requirement of either NSPS 6693 - National Security Internship I or NSPS 6697 Thesis I and NSPS 6698 Thesis II.  If the six credit thesis option is selected, NSPS 6698 will count toward electives.

Program Outcomes:

• Develop a working knowledge of the most prominent features national security with an emphasis on the United States’ national security enterprise.
• Acquire a foundational understanding and awareness of issues related to cyber security and information protection.
• Formulate original research through graduate-level thesis or acquire practitioner work experience through an internship.
• Evaluate and design policy solutions to contemporary national security problems.

The University of New Haven's computer science program is one of the best in the country. The Master of Public Administration is the most widely accepted and valued professional degree in the field of Public Service. Our MPA program provides students with the core skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful professional in Public Service, as well as offering students an opportunity to complete a concentration in one of five timely areas: 1) Municipal Management, 2) Public Financial Management, 3) Public Safety, 4) Nonprofit Management, and 5) Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Our MPA accommodates the needs of students new to the field as well as those already working in public service. In both cases, we seek students who are motivated to increase their knowledge and gain the skills necessary to take on challenging assignments in public service, particularly at the state and local level.

The Public Financial Management concentration provides students with the analytic skills and knowledge to assess the finances and economic position of a municipality or other governmental unit with the power to tax

One of only a small number of such programs in the United States, our master’s program in fire and explosion investigation offers 39 credits* of interdisciplinary coursework in fire/arson investigation, emergency management, public safety, and more. Students in the program study alongside leading professionals in the fire service including current and former fire and police chiefs, homeland security executives, private investigators, and insurance agents. Successful alumni have moved on to leadership positions in local fire departments, state and federal emergency agencies, and private firms.

Students take required courses in topics such as the chemistry of fires, dynamics of structural fires, and arson analysis. Candidates will also chose from a series of electives that explores issues, including fire and building codes, fire scene reconstruction, terrorism, and industrial fire protection.

Our program is a great choice for those who’ve recently completed an undergraduate degree or who are looking to continue their education straight out of college. The program’s schedule allows for students to complete the program in as few as 12 months for those who meet the criteria to waive the three business foundation courses, and carry a 12-credit hour load. Students who do not meet the waiver criteria may complete the program in less than two years.

 Management Finance

The concertation advances the student’s knowledge of the efficient and effective management of financial matters in an organization.a

The 12-credit community development concentration provides students with additional skills focused on the administration of both traditional and non-traditional programs and services. The concentration addresses planning, development, and evaluation of innovative approaches to treatment and prevention in the public and private human service sectors as well as in business and industry.

Program Outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate competence in all 8 core domains of counseling, as well as the concentration of clinical mental health counseling.
• Students successfully synthesize major theoretical concepts in the core counseling curriculum and their concentration area with their practicum experience.
• Students demonstrate, at a professional level, applied intervention skills in the internship.

The program consists of 60 credits, 48 of which compose the core curriculum completed by all students, and 12 of which constitute one of three concentration areas: general, forensic mental health, or community development.

The Event and Tourism Management Concentration provides students with skills and experiences focused specifically on the event and tourism industries. Students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience relevant for managing the sustainable tourism experience for the benefit of the traveler, host, and supporting industries. Complex aspects of event, convention, and meeting management are highlighted. Students will also be exposed to the competencies essential to functioning within the industry in an international context.

Students earning a B.S. degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management with a concentration in Event and Tourism Management are required to complete 121 credits, including the University core curriculum (41 credits), Hospitality and Tourism Management major requirements (36 credits), Event and Tourism Management concentration (9 credits), Writing Across the Curriculum elective (3 credits), fieldwork (2 credits), service requirement (1 credit), internship (3 credits) and free electives (26 credits).
