This undergraduate degree offers students a concentrated studio art experience to complement a broad exposure to the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences. Bachelor of Arts (Art) students have four course tracks to choose from: Studio Arts, Design Studies, Community Arts, and Digital Fabrication and Design.

The College of Nursing offers an interdisciplinary professional graduate degree program leading to a Master of Sustainable Peacebuilding (MSP). The MSP is designed to prepare students for careers in peacebuilding—e.g. international development, conflict resolution, resource stewardship. The MSP curriculum is designed to develop student expertise in systems thinking, social-ecological interactions, and the application of such concepts to peacebuilding and development fields. In addition to fulfilling all Graduate School master’s degree requirements, MSP students are required to take 44 credits over the course of six semesters—two full calendar years. Only full-time students will be accepted to the program.

Students completing the MSP will:

• Classify the various components of complex social-ecological systems and identify appropriate intervention strategies.
• Recognize patterns of human-environment interaction, including drivers of change resulting in conflict, development, and peacebuilding.
• Acquire critical knowledge across at least four distinct disciplines relevant to development and peacebuilding and relate and translate knowledge among the disciplines.
• Facilitate effective group problem-solving processes, which includes communicating confidently and effectively to diverse audiences.
• Assess systemic outcomes of peacebuilding programs and policies and recommend adaptive modifications for improvement.

The worlds of journalism, advertising, and public relations are changing at a rapid pace with the integration of social media, mobile apps, amateur photography and video, and instant feedback. UWM's Department of Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies (JAMS) is a great place to learn about the tools used today and to obtain the skills to adapt to the channels of tomorrow.

The Department of Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies (JAMS) teaches students about the role of media in culture and society and offers hands-on experience in journalism and advertising/public relations. The JAMS major blends liberal arts education in media studies with professional training for work in media fields.

The Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies offers a master’s program for educators, community leaders, and those working in community-based organizations. Students deepen their knowledge about urban education and the contexts of urban communities. The program enhances participants’ ability to critically analyze education and processes of community change, and courses focus on the causes of inequality and oppression and explore approaches for fostering change.

Our program offers a broad technical and conceptual experience through experimentation with a range of approaches to the medium, from sculptural to functional, and nontraditional to traditional.

Everyone is part of multiple social groups. Your local community, your ethnic group, your religious organization, your state, your club or team—these are all examples of groups to which you might belong. The Sociology major at UWM offers students a chance to better understand these groups and the people within them. Students explore the social causes and consequences of human behavior, including topics such as political movements, population shifts, housing patterns, racism, gender inequality, the legal system, the medical profession, crime, families, sexuality, workplace organization, food cultures, and more.

This concentration is designed primarily for the student with an undergraduate degree in music education or performance who wishes to pursue advanced training in Conducting: Instrumental plus related studies in music performance and allied areas. A student must successfully pass an audition that demonstrates an advanced level of conducting skill to qualify for admission to the program.  Students may also have to pass other audition(s) in performance area(s), depending on their focus.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre Practices supports engaged theatre practice that meets the social and cultural challenges of our twenty-first century society.

Our innovative curriculum invites students to begin by building core theatre skills, then gradually applying them to a range of projects, settings, and populations. This culminates in in-depth application of these skills through internships, community placements and a Capstone. The BA in Theatre Practice supports a professional track for students seeking a Wisconsin Theatre Teaching license in K-12 Theatre Education. It also offers students the option to earn a Cultures and Communities (C&C) certificate and is the home of the Arts and Social Entrepreneurship (A&SE) Certificate Program.

The BA in Theatre Practice engages students in focusing their study on educational and social justice theatre, devising and performing new work, storytelling, dramaturgy, directing, playwriting, and arts and social entrepreneurship.

The Public Library Concentration prepares MLIS graduates to positively engage with the range of opportunities facing the post-modern public library: extended community involvement, incorporation of emerging technologies, and pro-active advocacy for service populations.

Public library leaders build vital, resilient communities through their understanding of user needs, community partnerships, access to information and library services, and the legal and financial frameworks of public libraries. The objective of the Public Library Concentration is to enable graduates to take strong leadership positions with sensitivity to community needs and the possibilities engendered by new media technologies.

The UWM Department of Sociology established its MA program in 1964, and since that time many of the program’s graduates have gone on to great success in professional careers and further academic study. Our Department is a diverse community of deeply engaged faculty and graduate students, and our MA program is designed to promote students’ academic and professional growth. The core course sequence for MA students provides a strong foundation in sociological theory, research, and analysis, while elective courses and faculty mentoring help develop students’ expertise in their chosen areas of sociological interest.
