The Physics Department exhibits exceptional strength in several areas. We invite applications from able students interested in experimental and theoretical surface physics and condensed matter physics; in structural biophysics and protein dynamics and function; in quantum field theory, cosmology, relativistic astrophysics, and gravitational-wave/multimessenger astronomy; in medical imaging.  The primary goal of our graduate education is the training of creative research scientists.

Comparative Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines issues of social identity and power, in contemporary and historical contexts. The field centers on questions of race, gender, and sexuality. Students are free to select from a range of courses in the Ethnic Studies program, and to include coursework they do from around the university their academic programs.

Unique to UWM, our program offers courses covering the Hmong diaspora. Wisconsin is home to the third largest Hmong American population in the US, making UWM a great place to learn about this population.

The Committee Interdisciplinary Major with a focus in Comparative Ethnic Studies is also one of a handful of majors that requires an internship prior to graduation, thereby ensuring that students leave college with hands-on experience from the local community. The program is administered by the College of Letters and Science interdepartmental Comparative Ethnic Studies Advisory Committee.

This undergraduate degree offers students a concentrated studio art experience to complement a broad exposure to the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences. Bachelor of Arts (Art) students have four course tracks to choose from: Studio Arts, Design Studies, Community Arts, and Digital Fabrication and Design.

The Department of Dance offers graduate study leading to the Master of Fine Arts in Dance. The program offers opportunity to hone technical skills, to explore personal intuition, imagination, and craft both in creating dance works and also in performing them, and to focus on critical areas of dance core studies.

The MFA in Dance is structured to meet the scheduling constraints of working dance professional performers, choreographers, and educators: A block of on-campus and distance learning coursework is available during the fall and spring semesters, in addition to the intensive summer graduate course offerings.

The Computer Engineering major is offered through the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science departments at UWM. Computer engineering pertains to the design, implementation and maintenance of hardware and software components of computers and computer-controlled equipment.

Our program provides students with a broad and strong technical background in the field. It also helps students develop a solid grounding in computing, mathematics and engineering. Students will learn to apply these theoretical principles to design hardware, software, networks, and computerized equipment for diverse application domains.

The Performance and Choreography/Contemporary Track in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance prepares students to perform and create original dance choreography for theatrical productions. Dance BFA students complete a rigorous technical and creative curriculum designed to develop the student's individual artistic voice. Contemporary Track majors additionally study body/mind sciences, dance pedagogy, historical and cultural contexts for dance, and the interactive collaboration skills necessary to bring dance to the theatre with a high degree of excellence.

Computer science is the study and design of computer systems, networks, software, and computing techniques. It is a dynamic field with a growing impact on the world today.

The Computer Science BA program is intended to permit students to combine interest in an alternate area (in humanities, arts, the professions or even natural science) with computer science in order to gain skills that increase their desirability with employers. Burning Glass found that adding software development or computer programming skills permits graduates to gain a 30+% salary premium over those without.

Biomedical engineering (BME) students at UWM will learn to translate engineering principles into clinical methods. Students will also engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects with labs in the College of Engineering & Applied Science, College of Letters & Science, College of Health Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and with local industry.

The BME undergraduate program emphasizes engineering design in preparation for employment in biomedical industries or launching startups in this fast-growing field. Freshmen and sophomores take a core curriculum that provides a foundation of engineering principles and tools, software application, anatomy and physiology, and communication skills. Juniors take courses on sensors and actuators, biomedical signal processing and medical devices. Seniors also work on capstone design projects and the Product Realization course in multidisciplinary teams. A wide variety of elective courses allow juniors and seniors to specialize in the area of their choice.

This concentration is designed for the music student who wishes to concentrate primarily on the pedagogy of his/her major performing string instrument. A student must successfully pass an audition at a satisfactory level of performance for admission to the program.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance String Pedagogy must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.

The study of Philosophy can be challenging because it asks students to critically examine very fundamental questions about what it means to be human - behavior, values, ethics, logic, aesthetics. Some describe it as "thinking in slow motion" because of the way it explores in depth the human experience.

Students choose philosophy because it instills a lifelong love and quest for knowledge, it imparts a disciplined and systematic way of thinking, and it enhances critical and analytical capacities. Most graduates of philosophy describe the great personal reward that comes from exploring the great thinkers of the past in the context of modern issues. But, they also passionately value the career skills that they developed - how to read and comprehend difficult text; how to understand different interpretations of information and assess opposing viewpoints; how to craft a clear and logical position on an issue in writing and orally; and how to make connections between smaller, seemingly disparate details and the big picture.
