Medical laboratory scientists are trained in the theoretical and practical aspects of laboratory medicine, which are critical to the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Medical Laboratory Science offers a wide variety of career options, including hospitals, clinics, independent laboratories, public health facilities, business, industry, research, sales, and marketing. Students also may use this major to prepare for medical or graduate school. Students successfully completing this program are eligible to sit for a national certification exam offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP-BOC). The UWM Medical Laboratory Science Program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Women's and Gender Studies is a discipline that critically examines gender and women's issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and challenges many traditional assumptions and theories. It examines the practice and expression of gender in different societies and at different historical moments.

Regardless of your gender, Women's and Gender Studies is crucial and relevant for anyone interested in working in criminal justice, social work, the non-profit sector, the arts, politics, business, and more. Students learn to look at the world and history through different perspectives and think about how gender and our perceptions of it impact culture, society, and daily interactions. It is a traditional liberal arts discipline where the knowledge and skills developed in the program can be applied to all types of career paths. Work experiences during college through internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer positions often shape career paths after graduation.

Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, soil science, biology and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. Environmental engineers work to improve drinking water supply, public health, recycling, sustainability, to control water and air pollution, and manage waste.

Students in the Biomedical Sciences major are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree upon completion of all requirements. This submajor provides excellent preparation for medical, physician assistant, dental, or veterinary school, biomedical research, forensic science, or employment with pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies.

The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology offers a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy that prepares students to become occupational therapists. During the program, students engage in graduate-level instruction embedded in the theory, research, and clinical underpinnings required to become evidence-based occupational therapy practitioners. Students may select a thesis option or project option in pursuing this degree. Students who are interested can choose to combine elective courses from the OT program with other courses on campus to receive the transcript-designated concentration in assistive technology and accessible design and/or ergonomics.

Assistive Technology and Accessible Design
The Concentration in Assistive Technology and Accessible Design is an interdisciplinary program designed to meet the demand for assistive technology and accessible design specialists. The College of Health Science’s Departments of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology and Communication Sciences Disorders, along with the School of Education’s Department of Teaching and Learning, collaborate on the course offerings. The concentration emphasizes technologies for disability.

This concentration is designed for the person possessing creative talent in acquiring and utilizing the techniques and craft of musical composition through theory, literature and analysis.  We foster development in instrumental, vocal, and electro-acoustic composition, with an emphasis on contemporary and experimental techniques. Interested students should preferably have experience in computer notation, midi applications, theory, literature, and analysis pedagogic areas.

Applicant must submit a portfolio of original compositions which could include CD/DVD/computer software files/midi programs in addition to at least one excerpt and one complete composition in conventional notation or analytical research paper(s) or presentations submitted or presented in a regional or national theory society organization, computer assisted analysis or presentation in such areas as Schenkerian analysis or Spectromorphology in acoustic, electronic or acoustic theory.

As the choices expand and the reach of the media becomes more global, media producers can be anyone from a major corporation to an individual activist with a Web site, and media consumers can interact with the products they encounter in a multitude of ways.

The MA in Media Studies offered through the Department of Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies is wide ranging and interdisciplinary. The goal of the program is to foster knowledge and understanding of mass media and society through critical, cultural, historical, legal, ethical, or social scientific approaches. One particular emphasis of the program is the relationship between the media and the public interest.

The Master of Science in Engineering program is a flexible program designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. The program can be a stepping-stone on the way to further studies and the pursuit of advanced research, such as can be obtained by pursuing the PhD. Or the program can provide a pathway to professional advancement through greater technical knowledge and intellectual maturity. The student, with the help and approval of a major advisor, can choose from a wide range of courses from throughout the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), and where appropriate, from other schools and colleges.

The Department of Linguistics offers master’s and doctoral degrees and a graduate certificate in Adult/University-Level Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
