If you thrive in a smaller campus environment with average class sizes of 20 to 30 people, consider doing the first two years of your degree on our Truro campus. After completing your first two years (and earning an Engineering diploma), you will move to the Halifax campus to complete the final two years of your degree.

CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil engineers provide a major contribution to society. They design and construct the infrastructures we use every day, from the roadways we travel on to the power stations that provide our homes with electricity.

Areas of focus
Students who choose to complete a degree in Civil Engineering will choose one of two distinct areas of focus:

• Option 1: Infrastructure
  • Students who choose structural engineering and materials will focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructures, including buildings, bridges, highways, airports, power plants and tunnels and the materials that will ensure their resiliency and sustainability. This stream allows students to choose technical electives from any of the sub-disciplines in Civil Engineering.
• Option 2: Earth and Environment
  • With a focus on water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and environmental systems analysis, students will learn to identify and design solutions to mediate and mitigate human impacts on the environment. Students in this option may choose to specialize in the Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences courses that are directly relevant to the Civil Engineering profession.

WHY STUDY RECREATION (THERAPEUTIC) AT DAL?

A one-of-a-kind opportunity to improve quality of life
Learn how recreation and leisure experiences can be used to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, illnesses and other limitations. One of a few four-year degrees of its kind, Dalhousie's Recreation program was the first to be accredited in Canada by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. You'll be prepared to write the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) exam to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

What will I learn?
The goal of the program is to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills to work in a variety of settings as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Since we only accept approximately 25 students each year, class sizes are very small and you have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and fellow students.
In first year, along with the introductory leisure studies course, you’ll take a range of introductory courses in other departments, such as physiology, sociology, psychology and anatomy. In years two to four, your courses will reflect your individual interests in the program—anything from leadership and dynamics to community development.

In the final year of the program a 16-week internship, under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, takes you out of the classroom and provides you with hands-on work experience that enhances your studies.

This program is your career accelerator in business after completing your diploma. Designed for future entrepreneurs, business owners, operators and more, this program positions you to transform your diploma to an undergraduate degree in as little as two years. 

IS SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FOR ME?
Have you completed a two-year diploma? Have you dreamt about the possibility of owning and operating your own business or have thought about taking your career to the next level? If so, Small Business Management could be your next step. In completing the Small Business Management program, you will earn much more than an undergraduate degree. The program complements and enhances the technical expertise gained in your initial twoyear diploma program and positions you for careers in business management or ownership. With only an extra two years, students can build onto and transform their college diploma into a degree.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
A rapidly growing discipline within the engineering profession, environmental engineers develop solutions to environmental problems – from ensuring our drinking water is clean to remediation of environmental hazards. You'll learn various approaches to environment-based design, waste management, water and soil quality, energy conservation and renewables, and air quality.

The Faculty of Science at Dalhousie University is the primary centre for education and research in science in Atlantic Canada. BENG IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
Industrial Engineers optimize processes and systems by finding ways to save time, money, energy, and materials. Through mathematical models, Industrial Engineers design systems and methods that will help businesses meet their production goals. Whether it's streamlining the manufacturing processes of automobiles to make cars more affordable or optimizing the nursing staff at a hospital to improve patient care, career options span a range of industries.

Co-op options
Co-op students take the same academic program as the non co-op program; however, our co-op option gives you an opportunity to complement your studies with three paid work terms.

The first two years of the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) program at Dalhousie is made up of core classes that are common to all disciplines. At the end of the first two years, these core classes can earn you a Diploma of Engineering before you finish the rest of your program in your discipline.

Following successful completion of all required courses of the Diploma of Engineering, Dal students will transition into the discipline they chose at the end of first-year engineering. The third year of study will be when students at Associated Universities make the transition to Dalhousie's Sexton campus to finish their degrees.

The public sector is made up of governments and their agencies, from the international level to the local level. It includes other publicly funded bodies, such as hospitals, schools, government corporations (CBC, Canada Post, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, etc.) and many not-for-profit organizations. The MPA degree will prepare you for the realities of working in the public sector, where the internal environment (visioning and goal-setting, decision-making, managing, accountability and conduct) is distinct from the for-profit sector.

WHY STUDY HEALTH PROMOTION AT DAL?
Learning for life in a tight-knit program
Health promotion is about encouraging the health and well-being of individuals and their communities. This program is unique in Canada, accepting only 40 students each year so we can develop a small, strong, well-rounded group of health promotion specialists. You'll work together in the program and in the community upon graduation.

What will I learn?
The Health Promotion program offers you the chance to take a variety of unique courses that will prepare you for a successful career. In first year you’ll take a broad range of introductory courses in the School of Health and Human Performance as well as from different departments including Computer Science, Statistics, Anatomy, Sociology, and Physiology.

After your first year you'll choose between entering the Community Health Promotion stream or the Research and Policy stream. In your final year you'll complete a 14-week internship; taking you out of the classroom and providing you with hands-on work experience.

While studying at our Agricultural Campus in Truro, you gain insights into problem solving, diagnostics and whole-system analysis. You learn business and science in the context of social and environmental responsibility, using sustainable production systems. You acquire a theoretical knowledge of plants. 

The students learn by doing: through labs, experiments, and growth trials, they develop a practical skill-set through hands-on experiences.
You see first-hand how environmental factors affect plant growth. You'll propagate plants, glean from the soil what makes them grow, and discover how to control and improve that growth. You also learn how to grow a plant-dependent business and your education will set you apart from everyone else in the job market. 

Flexibility is another strength of our program. Get the diploma you really want by selecting the courses you love. We offer courses in a wide variety of subject areas and departments, from Horticulture, Agronomy, and Business, to Environmental Science-and even Engineering.
