Overview

Research and Evaluation (Co-Op) is an Ontario College Graduate Certificate program that supports students and professionals in developing sought-after research and program evaluation skills. Program evaluation in Canada is an expanding industry in terms of both its general use and the diversity of contexts in which it is applied. Students learn diverse social science research methods and apply them with the aim of program evaluation and optimization. Students also have the option to complete a co-operative work experience that will enhance the applicability of their skills to the workplace.

Co-operative Education

This one-year graduate certificate program is designed for university and college graduates seeking a career in the operations management sector. This program will be completed in two levels and be delivered using both face-to-face (web-facilitated) and blended methods.

The curriculum will focus on applied knowledge in the field of business operations within a global economy. Project Management is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program, completed in two four-month levels (laptop required). Students will gain the in-depth knowledge, competencies, skills, tools, and techniques required to plan and execute major projects that achieve organizational goals on time and on budget. The Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge is an integral part of the program curriculum. The curriculum also addresses emerging trends in project management through courses in Agile Project Management, Project Recovery and Project Leadership. Upon completion of the first level of the program, students will be eligible for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification, an entry-level designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Business - Human Resources is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. Students learn business basics such as accounting, communications, and computer applications, then focus on HR subjects such as training and development, recruitment, compensation, benefits, employment law and occupational health and safety.  In addition, students have the opportunity to achieve six of the nine Certified Human Resources Professional/Leader (CHRP/CHRL) credits. In their final semester, in class students have the opportunity to participate in a mentorship with an HR professional to experience first-hand the HR workplace environment. Graduates are in demand for HR generalist  jobs as well as in recruiting, compensation and benefits, training and development and health and safety. Professional Accounting is a three level program that enables students from any undergraduate discipline to complete a graduate certificate in Accounting.
Upon completion of the program, students will have completed all entry and technical courses of the Advanced Certificate in Accounting (ACAF) offered by CPA Canada.  Students will still need to complete four applied courses which are offered through Part-Time Studies at Fanshawe College. The ACAF program is the only standardized national education program in Canada for intermediate accounting positions.  Students that complete the program will also be eligible for some exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
Courses will be enriched with hands-on integrated technology applications and case studies based on real-world scenarios. Further real-world industry exposure will be maximized with guest speakers and hands-on projects.  The program is designed to integrate all of the course topics and to develop students critical thinking skills, research skills, and decision-making skills.
Students will make extensive use of Microsoft Excel and other software used in the accounting industry.

Journalism - Broadcast students learn skills to develop a career as a Broadcast Journalist in electronic media, radio, television and webmedia.  Develop story telling skills as a reporter using broadcast news gathering equipment, audio and visual, news writing, newscasting, news editing, interviewing, researching, documentary/current affairs production, sportscasting, newsbeats, news management, media law and media ethics.

Students operate four broadcast properties in Fanshawe College's School of Contemporary Media building, which is equipped with the latest in broadcast facilities.

Advanced Diploma in Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education

The Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education program is an Ontario College Advanced Diploma that prepares graduates to enter the fire service in the field of fire prevention.

The program provides a foundation in fire science and fire mathematics. It also provides comprehensive coverage of relevant codes and legislation (e.g., Ontario Fire Code and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, the Ontario Building Code and the Building Code Act).

The core vocational curriculum is aligned with several professional credentials offered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): Fire Inspector I and II, Fire and Life Safety Educator I and II, and Public Information Officer. Students will also graduate with the communication skills and interpersonal skills they need to function as leaders in the fire service and in the community.  

Learning Outcomes:

  • Conduct field inspections of new or existing single- and multi-use structures to determine code compliance and to evaluate fire protection systems and equipment (e.g., occupancy classification and occupant loads; hazardous conditions involving equipment, processes and operations; emergency planning and preparedness procedures; storage, handling and use of hazardous materials, and flammable and combustible liquids and gases; egress and emergency access; fire flows and fire growth potential).
  • Prepare clear and concise field inspection reports and plan review reports based on applicable codes, standards, policies and procedures of the jurisdiction.
  • Process permit applications and plan review applications in accordance with applicable laws, standards, policies and procedures of the jurisdiction.
  • Investigate and resolve common and complex complaints, recording the complaint information and ensuring the investigation process is initiated and the complaint resolved in accordance with applications codes and standards and the policies and procedures of the jurisdiction.
  • Identify the applicable code or standard in response to a fire protection, fire prevention or life safety issue, including those identified in plan review, and recommend modifications to address the problem, need or deficiency in an inspection report or inspection order.
  • Participate in legal proceedings, in consultation with legal counsel, regarding the findings of a field inspection, plan review or complaint.
  • Review building plans for compliance with applicable codes and standards for fire and life safety (e.g., occupancy classification, occupant load, construction type, construction features, fire protection systems), and verify newly constructed buildings against an approved set of plans and building features
  • Recommend policies and procedures for inspection and plan review to ensure inspections and plan review are conducted in accordance with the policies of the jurisdiction and due process of the law is followed.
  • Coordinate fire and life safety educational activities by establishing priorities, preparing budgets, scheduling activities, communicating with stakeholders, and documenting activities.

Diploma in Office Administration - Health Services

This two-year professional program is designed to provide students with extensive practical understanding and knowledge to perform administrative support in a wide variety of medical environments.  The focus will be on medical terminology and transcription, medical billing, patient management, medical office procedures, medical ethics and research.  The emphasis will be on interpersonal, communication, organizational, technical, and problem-solving skills applied to enhance the effective operation of the medical environment.

Expert training in computerized medical records systems, billing systems and other office equipment technology applications will be combined with analytical and multitasking strategies to facilitate scheduling, decision making, co-ordination and task completion.  Utilizing these skills, students will be capable of overseeing a variety of medical office environments.  Researching, developing, and presenting accurate medical documentation, correspondence and reports will be emphasized.

A four-week medical office environment workplace component will provide the student with practical, hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply the theories and concepts learned in the Office Administration - Health Services program classroom.  The importance of professional ethics, privacy and confidentiality will be highlighted throughout the program.

The Construction Engineering Technology program will develop the technical knowledge and skills required to oversee and manage the construction of residential, industrial, commercial and institutional projects - from the conceptual planning phase through to project completion and contract closeout. 

Students within the advanced diploma will learn how to estimate labour, material and costs, write and understand contacts, establish a project’s budget, develop a site logistic plan, schedule and manage construction projects, and perform on-site field engineering, field inspections, and utilize the latest onsite technology. You'll also learn the soft skills required to be an effective, respected leader - both in the office and on-site.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop and use strategies to enhance professional growth and ongoing learning in the construction engineering field.
  • Comply with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with current legislation and regulations.
  • Complete duties and assist in monitoring that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices in the construction engineering field.
  • Promote and carry out sustainability practices* in accordance with contract documents, industry standards and environmental legislative requirements.
  • Facilitate the collaboration and interaction among project stakeholders* to support construction engineering projects*.
  • Collect, process, analyze and coordinate technical data to produce written and graphical project-related documents.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the collecting, processing, interpreting and application of survey/geomatics and layout information* to implement construction projects*.
  • Select and use industry-specific electronic and digital technologies to support the design and construction of projects.
  • Analyze and solve technical problems related to the design and implementation of construction projects* by applying engineering concepts, technical mathematics* and building science*.
  • Schedule, coordinate and monitor the progression of construction projects* by applying principles of construction project management.
  • Prepare estimates of time, cost, quality and quantity, tenders and bids.
  • Perform, coordinate and facilitate quality control* testing and monitoring of equipment, materials and methods involved in the implementation and completion of construction projects*.
  • Apply teamwork, leadership, supervision and interpersonal skills when working individually or within multidisciplinary teams to complete work on construction projects*.
