Overview

Humber’s Practical Nursing diploma program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a registered practical nurse (RPN). You will develop, practise and refine your skills in our state-of-the-art clinical simulation, computer and bioscience labs with direct clinical practice and simulated laboratory experiences. Humber is a leading-edge facility in every respect. This program has been awarded the highest rating for accreditation - a testament to its excellence. Practice and learn in our bioscience and health science laboratories – including clinical simulation labs that provide hands-on learning in a controlled environment. Continuous placement in a range of clinical settings enhances your ability to apply in-classroom education to real-life situations.

You will participate in a total of 1,035 hours of unpaid clinical placements over the course of the program which take place over each semester and give you valuable hands-on experience. The school arranges and communicates with all placements. Throughout the first year of the program, you will participate in a unique community-service learning placement in a variety of community settings. In Semester 2, you will work in a long-term care setting, while Semester 3 takes place in rehabilitation, complex or acute-care settings. In Semester 2 and 3, you will also participate in clinical simulation and/or Stilwell (a virtual learning community designed to represent a typical Canadian neighbourhood). In Semester 4, you will complete a preceptored (one-on-one placement alongside a registered practical nurse) pre-graduate clinical practice.

You will build a foundation in electrical and logic circuits, and programming. Humber’s Esthetician/Spa Management diploma program gives you the business management and hands-on skills you need for a career in the $119 billion Spa Economy (Global Wellness Institute, 2018). On the business side, learn the fundamentals of business writing, marketing, retail operation and day-to-day spa management. Hands-on courses focus on traditional services such as nail care technologies, advanced facial techniques, waxing, body treatments and makeup applications. As well, you will learn advanced medical esthetic services such as OxyGeneo, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL).

At Humber, you will practise what you are learning and improve your skills at The Humber Spa, a simulated work environment and retail boutique open to the community. Working under the guidance of qualified lab technicians, you will manage the administrative functions of the spa, including frontline responsibilities, retail operations and providing spa services. You will provide a series of treatments including facials, hand and foot care, and body treatments to clientele.

In the first semester, you will be introduced to spa management and client services, physiology of the skin, and professional skin care, and begin to train in traditional esthetic services. In the second semester, you will study computer applications, advanced facial techniques, waxing services and nail care. Later in the program, you will study marketing, cosmetic applications, human resource management and medical spa services.

Humber’s Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Building Construction Technician diploma and the Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma, the program introduces students to the carpentry trade, gives practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from this certificate program into the diploma and advanced diploma programs. Additionally, Humber’s Carpentry and Renovation Technician diploma and Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma offer additional pathways.

The Carpentry and Renovation certificate program is designed to introduce you to both the practical experience necessary for trade regulations and the academic requirements of carpentry trade certification. You will gain a solid understanding of the fundamental technical elements of the carpentry trade.

You will learn health and safety practices and perform building construction and renovation tasks in compliance with contracts, building code, laws and ethical practices.   • We believe it is necessary for our students to have extensive experience in the profession in order to be successful as registered early childhood educators. Students can expect to have work placement experiences within the program and will be required to complete approximately 450-600 work placement hours over three semesters. During these three semesters, students may have field practicums such as working with families and children (various age groups) in licensed child care or preschool settings, EarlyON Child and Family Centres, various community programs, full day kindergarten, or home based child care programs. A different placement for Semesters 2, 3, and 4 ensures a range of experiences prior to graduation and equips students with a range of networks within the community to explore employment in the future.

Humber’s Sport Management advanced diploma program prepares you to manage the business of sport. You will develop a thorough knowledge of the structure and functionality of the Canadian sport industry including specific responsibilities and governance structure of organizations; rules and regulations governing sport; coaching standards; tournament hosting and scheduling; and sport sponsorship development. A three-day leadership camp at the OELC (Ontario Educational Leadership Centre) helps build communication and leadership skills while guest speakers, practical training and field trips provide added benefits in preparing you for the workplace.

Humber’s Landscape Technician diploma program is based on the principles of sustainability, conservation and environmental sensitivity. You’ll learn about landscape design and development, site construction, general horticulture, grounds maintenance, and related technologies through a combination of in-class studies and hands-on landscape training.

At Humber, we have exceptional facilities for landscape education. The Humber Arboretum, for example, is a 250-acre botanical garden centred on the west branch of the Humber River, surrounding Humber’s North Campus. It includes ornamental, woodland and wildlife gardens serving as a unique living classroom for plant studies, construction, arboricultural and horticultural skills. Our construction lab is housed in a weather-protected 8,000-square-foot facility which allows you to build full-scale structures such as decks, gazebos and retaining walls. In Humber’s Radio and Media Production graduate certificate program, students develop the skills to make entertaining and engaging broadcasts and podcasts. Imagine combining the experience of your degree or diploma with new skills in audio storytelling and broadcasting. Graduates of our program are working in all aspects of radio and podcast production across Canada. Many are instrumental in some of Canada's most popular podcasts, and some have been recognized at the 2019 Canadian Podcasting Awards.
Students get hands-on experience in radio and audio production studio techniques; on-air announcing, newscast performance and sports reporting; hosting live music and public affairs programs; writing stories, shows, commercials and scripts, radio programming and promotions; interviewing techniques and more. They produce exciting audio and visual content including video and podcasts in Humber’s leading-edge production studios.
Students learn about the latest trends and developments in broadcasting and podcasting, and prepare for careers in media production including on-air, on-camera, online and social media.  They create original digital audio content and experience the thrill of having their work distributed by broadcast on the radio, podcast streaming or other means including social media.
Students take intensive classes and workshops with expert faculty where they apply their new skills to studio and broadcast operations.  By second semester, students can choose to perform live in our streaming or broadcast radio stations as a music host, newscaster or announcer. Hands-on training in on-air performance is provided through Humber’s student radio station, on 96.9FM, which is also streamed online and through various listening apps. Alternatively, students can choose to focus on creative studio production techniques and on-air operations.
Work Placement
This program includes a work placement component to give students an opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in their area of interest in the radio and audio production industries. The 160 hour placement is done in the summer semester after two semesters of study and practice.
