Overview
The Canadian Retirement Home (also known as Retirement Communities) industry is made up of multiple private residences within a single dwelling where residents live independently but interact frequently for recreation, meals and common interests. It is important to note that retirement homes are not long-term care or nursing homes where support is provided on a daily basis and residents may be housed in multi-resident spaces. The Canadian Retirement Home industry is expected to double in the next five years as Canada experiences a surge in aging baby boomers. This rapid expansion is creating an industry-wide need for qualified staff and retirement home managers.
Students in the Retirement Home Management Graduate Certificate program will be trained to fill this need by developing foundational skills in the areas of leadership, administration, hospitality, financial management, sales and marketing, health, wellness and recreation, food and nutrition, and human resources management. This program was developed with industry professionals from companies (Verve Senior Living, Chartwell Retirement Residences, Revera Retirement Living and others) of various sizes and scopes within the Retirement Home Management industry.
The program is ideal for students interested in this rapidly growing area, as well as those already working in the senior living industry who want to increase their level of responsibility or progress in their career. The program is also suited to those interested in related industries such as recreation, hospitality, food and beverage, nutrition, and sales.
Work Placement
This program will provide students with the hands-on practical exposure to the retirement home industry and the opportunity to specialize in their chosen area. It consists of a 200 hour placement in an approved retirement community of the student's choice. Students will have an opportunity to observe and learn from experienced professionals in a real-life work setting, while integrating their classroom learning in order to gain required hands on experience. Students have the support of a faculty internship co-ordinator and are able to apply to a variety of retirement communities run by our industry partners. They also have the opportunity to seek an employer for an approved internship. This work placement will take place after the second semester.

Humber’s Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology advanced diploma program provides you with comprehensive knowledge of energy systems used for commercial and industrial complexes. As you progress through the program, you will learn to apply engineering principles and conventions to achieve optimal energy efficiency through a process of evaluation, monitoring, load evaluation through software modelling, direct digital control (DDC), assessment and necessary corrective action.
Our program features an optional, paid work placement directly related to your program of study. The work experience is designed to enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in an actual work environment, as well as enhance your employability upon graduation. The work placement takes place after the completion of Semester 4, for a minimum of 400 hours. Participating students are required to complete work preparation sessions prior to the work term to help them develop an industry specific resumé and effective interviewing skills. The graduates from the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program are 5G ready. Humber’s Regulatory Affairs graduate certificate program focuses on developing the concepts, skills and techniques required to work in regulatory affairs in the pharmaceutical, medical device or biotechnology industries. You will gain knowledge of the regulatory system, legislation, procedures and practices which relate to the development, manufacture, quality assurance and marketing of health-related products.
The importance of internationally harmonized regulations and future trends in the industry will be examined by analyzing relevant international and Canadian legislation and regulations. You will study a wide range of regulations and standards including good manufacturing practices, good laboratory practices, good clinical practices, good documentation practices, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Canadian Food and Drugs Act, the Environmental Protection Act, principles of regulatory compliance and inspections, drug establishment licensing, and related standards and guidelines. Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.
Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

In order to best prepare for this dynamic industry, you will have several opportunities to travel internationally on both short duration trips and for full semesters abroad.
