Electrical Engineering Technicians work in the areas of installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair, as well as analyzing and troubleshooting a variety of electrical circuits, equipment and systems. In addition, graduates will be able to participate in quality control and quality assurance programs and apply communication, documentation, computer information technology, and teamwork skills to support the engineering activities of an organization. Technicians maintain power generation stations and transmission lines and work in areas such as protection, industrial telecommunications, electrical maintenance and installation, and control systems. Students receive extensive hands-on instruction in several state-of-the-art laboratories. They will learn how to select, design, install, maintain, program and troubleshoot modern industrial, electrical and electronic systems. Graduates from our Technician or Technology programs may obtain certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

Pathways to Success
Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Electrical Engineering Degree Program at Lakehead University.

Civil Engineering Technicians carry out technical functions related to a broad range of civil engineering fields including structural, municipal, highway and transportation engineering, water resources, geotechnical engineering, environmental protection and infrastructure rehabilitation.

Designed for those interested in gaining entrance to and/or a competitive advantage in the mineral exploration job market. This program provides students with the entry-level knowledge and skills to function as a valuable member of a mineral exploration team on projects in grassroots exploration to mine-site exploration. The two-semester program incorporates both classroom teaching and valuable hands-on experience during a culminating two-week field school. The modular format and distance or in-class delivery of this program provides the flexibility for students to study while maintaining their employment and caters to students in remote northern communities. Graduates are ready to enter the job market with a college certificate after only one year of study.

Social Service Workers focus on promoting equality, and addressing disadvantages that people face on the basis of race, disability, gender or age. They use their knowledge of human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counseling skills, to work with groups and/or communities to help them become more caring and capable of supporting their communities.

This program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events in their lives from an individual, family and community perspective. Students will learn how to intervene in crisis situations and will develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families and communities to better meet their challenges and to enhance their social functioning. Clinical practice labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment and planning. Students must be able to apply skills, such as teamwork and group work outside of class. They may also be required to seek feedback from agency professionals for lab work and video assignments. Northern College values lifelong learning in an effort to maintain the current competencies outlined by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Earn an Advanced Ontario Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology in only two years instead of three. We belong to a society of builders. Wherever humans have put down roots, they have raised roofs, walls and monuments to mark their places in space and time. Builders do something no other occupation can accomplish: they change the face of our world. There are technicians and technologists at every point along the building process. Civil engineering technologists assist in recommending design parameters to engineers, conduct inspections of structures, perform tests on soils, concrete or other building materials, analyze results of tests, prepare statistical data, tables and drawings, and supervise construction projects. Students will learn to draw, design and inspect structures in buildings and highways, perform tests on soils and concrete, and survey using the latest equipment. During their second year, they will complete an independent technical report related to civil engineering.

In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand.  The wide variety of courses offered within this program will yield a well-rounded Business Graduate.               

The Mobile Application Development Graduate Certificate program prepares students for careers in the expanding and evolving fields of mobile web and application development. The latest mobile devices and applications are changing the way we communicate, do business, and access news and entertainment, creating exciting and innovative career and business opportunities. The program will offer students a strong practical background in mobile solutions design and development that encompasses different devices, operating systems, database and network infrastructures, as well as coverage of software quality and the security aspects to mobile solution development. Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to develop their own mobile applications for each platform.

Early Childhood Educators (ECE’s) are professionals who are part of a multidisciplinary team that may include behavioural therapists, speech pathologists, consultants, parents and school representatives. They assist children to make a successful transition to, and integration into the school system. In addition to working with infants and children up to 12 years old, Early Childhood Educators will also be part of a team and expected to work in a professional and competent manner with staff, parents, and community members. Graduates require good communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as sound judgment.

Besides planning and conducting the regular routines of the day, students will have the opportunity to observe children to determine their present skill level in each developmental area. Students will research, plan, carry out and evaluate a full range of program and curriculum activities designed to help each child reach his/her full developmental potential. A distinct feature of the program is the opportunity it offers students to gain practical work experience in a variety of settings: day care centres, nursery schools, parent resource centres, toy-lending libraries, junior and senior kindergartens, and before- and after-school programs throughout the community.

Children’s Play Lab
The Children’s Play Lab provides students with the opportunity to design, setup, monitor and make improvements to an early years learning environment. Partnerships with local early learning centres will provide our students with the unique opportunity to work closely with young children in a controlled environment.

This program is a flexible program that provides students with access to a wide variety of post secondary options. While exploring different areas of study such as community services, business, health sciences, and technology and working toward a college certificate or diploma, students earn credits that may be transferred to other college programs or university. The program focuses on developing enhanced skills in communication, critical thinking and computer literacy to build a solid foundation for future studies and career success. This program offers students the opportunity to:

• Design a program of study that upgrades their qualifications for other university and college programs.
• Obtain a general post-secondary education before deciding on a career path.
• Personalize a program of study based on their goals and interests.
• Earn credits that can be transferred to a variety of program areas at college or university.
• Attend college even if they have been unable to gain entry into the program of their choice due to limited enrolment.
