The University of Manitoba’s Italian program allows students to master the Italian language and acquire cultural knowledge. An emphasis is placed on language skills as well as in inter-cultural skills.

• The Italian courses offered at the University of Manitoba not only teach grammar and contemporary literature but also touch upon Italian culture and history. In-class opportunities for conversation and comprehension are abundant and designed to facilitate practical experience in using the language.
• Guest lecturers are brought in to speak on a variety of subjects, and there are frequent film showings.

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is also the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems. Psychologists and their work can be classified into three general categories: Research Psychology, Applied Psychology, and Clinical/Counselling Psychology.

Philosophy is the study of reality, knowledge, values, logic and related topics. The existence of free will or God, the nature of science, art, emotions and language, ethical theory, proofs, fallacies, and so on. It is one of the oldest subjects of study in the Western world. Philosophy students are trained to think abstractly and write clearly, and rationally assess ideas in a way that few others can equal.

The millennium from the end of the Roman empire to the Renaissance (500-1500 C.E.) was a formative period in the history of European civilization. This program offers students a broad approach to the period, through its literature, art, languages, history, music, and more.

Biology is the study of life as it has evolved and is evolving on earth. All aspects of life are examined, from molecular processes inside cells, to large scale ecological interactions between organisms in their environment, and how the changing environment shapes these interactions.

Food scientists fuel the minds that feed the world. They study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food and use their findings to develop the nutritious, delicious and innovative foods products that line supermarket shelves everywhere.

In the Bachelor of Science (Food Science), students study food safety, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and sensory science. They develop a greater understanding of the fate of agricultural raw materials, and how such materials are processed and formulated into food products before being presented to the consumer.

Program focus options

• Science – Explores the science and technology of food processing, packaging, and preservation of foods
• Business – Explores the business and economics of food production, including marketing and finance, for students who wish to work in the food industry as business managers or entrepreneurs.

Co-op option
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if you take more work terms in winter).

Environmental Science examines the physical, chemical, and biological components of the Earth’s environment, its diverse systems, and the complex ways in which they interact. Environmental scientists use a variety of scientific and analytical techniques to measure environmental parameters, to evaluate the state of environmental systems, and to project the changes in environmental systems as a result of human activities and climate change. Natural and physical systems behavior is key to evaluating the implications of human activities such as agriculture, industry, and resource extraction, processing, and use. Environmental problems such as contamination and pollution, global warming, and biodiversity loss are studied with regard to past, present, and future practices and solutions.

The Human Nutritional Sciences program includes foundation courses in basic sciences, fundamental courses in metabolic and applied nutrition, and applied courses in food utilization and management with an overall emphasis in human nutrition in any of the options that are available. Students will master key competencies in specializations in nutrition, foods or the food industry. All students receive a solid theoretical foundation in both food and nutritional sciences. Topics of study include energy and exercise, nutrients and nutritional supplements, food labels and health claims, diet and disease prevention, nutrient metabolism and disease states, nutrient requirements and diet evaluation, nutrition education and dietary change, and food quality and ingredient technology.

With Asper’s hybrid teaching model, you’ll apply finance theory to real-world issues and graduate with the skills necessary for a successful career in finance. The Diploma in Dental Hygiene is a 3-year program that prepares students to work as dental hygienists in a variety of employment settings. Dental hygiene is a self-regulated health service profession concerned primarily with the prevention of oral disease and the promotion of optimum oral health. As a licensed professional, the dental hygienists' scope of practice is regulated by provincial legislation. The dental hygiene process of care consists of five components: assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate, which guide dental hygiene practice in every setting. Dental hygienists work in private dental offices, community health centres, educational institutions, personal care homes and various other environments.
