The Classical Studies program is designed for students who wish to study the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome either as a secondary interest (e.g. a double major) or as preparation for entrance into further professional studies (architecture, education, journalism, law, library science, museum studies). 

Classical Studies offers students the option of studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome with only minimal or no language study.  It is a perfect fit for those who wish to develop their interest in and knowledge of Ancient Greece and Rome but who do not wish to continue their study of ancient societies into a career or post-graduate study.

History is more than just a collection of names, dates, and events. In fact, History explains everything – our actions, our knowledge, and our decisions.

Through UNB’s History program, you’ll learn that everything we know, do, and sense comes from our interpretation of the past – and interpreting it well is essential to shaping our future. You’ll also learn that History is as diverse as humanity itself – past and present – and grows with every moment.  Studying History will help you understand how and why change happens.

In the Chemical Engineering program at UNB, you’ll learn how to transform raw materials into useful products while protecting the environment, managing resources, and meeting strict health and safety standards. You’ll also explore chemical processes that improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase safety and security. Examples include the development of more affordable drugs, more efficient fuels, and better pollution controls. In other words, you’ll explore ways to make the world a better place. 

Chemical Engineering is available as a major in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering program. Two option programs within the technical electives stream are available: Energy Conversion Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

Gender and Women's Studies gives students an opportunity to explore gender issues in an interdisciplinary context, and it offers a useful complement to other fields. The required courses provide a framework for understanding the gender-based aspects of knowledge, power, and society.

Gender and Women's Studies represents a new approach to knowledge; it examines the gender-based aspects of human experience and women's roles in society. Gender and Women's Studies includes a wide variety of academic disciplines and professions.

Bachelor of Arts
The Gender and Women's Studies program is available as a major, double major or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree. Courses in the Faculty of Arts cover a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions. In your first two years of the program, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.

By specializing in Human Resources Management with an honours or concentration, you will learn how to attract, motivate, and retain the right people for your organization. In the six credit hour Venture Assessment course you will work with our partners at the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) to assess startups in their portfolio to determine if they are investment ready. Additionally, you will analyze and deliberate over applications from UNB-led startups to recommend up to two real cash investments each year from the Fraser Student Venture Fund.

• Annual business plan competition – winners can receive cash prizes to launch startups

One of the first programs of its kind in Canada, Media Arts & Cultures (MAAC) at UNB has offered students a dynamic mix of critical media studies and hands-on creative coursework since 1996. As a MAAC major, you will learn about media by making media. You will consider, critique, and engage intellectually with media, but you will also learn the tools and techniques used today to create media content.

MAAC combines elements of the liberal arts and fine arts – critical thinking and creative expression. Like all Arts majors, you will write research papers and give presentations, but you will also make videos, media remixes, animations, blogs, and video games.

In Media Arts & Cultures, we'll teach you to be both a critical consumer and a creative producer, both a scholar of media and an author of media. You will not only learn from reading textbooks but also from screening a film or playing a game - and then making one yourself.

Hands-on learning
Media Arts & Cultures emphasizes experiential learning throughout the program. You will combine courses in the history and language of film with courses in film production. A course in game studies that examines philosophical reflections on play and games in western culture can be paired with another on contemporary video game design. 

If you’re curious about the social-psychological aspects of recreation, sports, and physical activity, UNB’s Bachelor of Recreation and Sport Studies program is designed for you. This four-year program balances theory and hands-on practice. Travel back in time to ancient Greece and Rome by studying how art, architecture, mythology, history, science, philosophy, and the language of the time have shaped what we now understand as our modern Western world. Using literature and archeology as your guides, you’ll learn about ancient civilizations in a fresh and compelling way.

Why Classics at UNB?
At UNB, we offer two approaches to the study of classical antiquity. For students intending to pursue the study of ancient Greece and Rome at a graduate level, we offer a program focusing on ancient Greek and Latin languages, and a critical knowledge of the works of ancient authors in their original languages.

For students planning to enter professional roles after the BA, we offer a program of humanities courses, which includes: history, mythology, philosophy, and art history. In either stream, students are invited to enroll in courses in archaeology.

Sociology is the study of society. Do you find yourself wondering about how social movements and norms develop?
