Develop your own approach to the study and practice of graphic design through a combination of brief-led and self-initiated projects.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore a wide spectrum of disciplines including design for print, illustration, photography, typography, animation and moving image

• Have the opportunity to show off your projects to the public and impress industry by exhibiting your work at the end of your final year

Our students have worked alongside practitioners and on live briefs from organisations such as Harvey Nichols, the BBC, Leeds Art Gallery and the NHS.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Learn more about your current artistic interests as you draw from a range of disciplines as inspiration for your project work
• Develop your passion, whether that’s for creative text writing, dance, acting or directing
• Use project work to explore your particular area of interest
• Enhance your practical performance skills and confidence in your ability to create performance work through weekly technique classes and creative workshops
• Undertake a professional placement during your second year

Leeds is home to hundreds of professional theatre collectives, dance companies and arts festivals so you’ll be surrounded by a vibrant creative community and an exciting range of performance work.

We’ll support you in setting up your second-year professional placement. You could spend a semester learning alongside and networking with one of the many artistic companies in Leeds or you could choose to travel abroad to work for an international organisation. Our students have previously completed placements at Company Chameleon in Manchester, BMotion Festival in Bassano del Grappa, Italy and with theatre company Third Angel based in Sheffield.

All of the staff teaching on your course are practising artists, which means our teaching is based on real professional experience. You’ll also have the chance to attend additional workshops delivered by external artists and companies.

Develop the skills you will need to work in the expanding and diverse modern professional audio and music industries.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore the technologies and techniques used in the recording, production and reproduction of sound and music
• Fuel your creativity while expanding your theoretical knowledge
• Access industry-standard facilities, including our impressive recording studios, post-production rooms and portable recording and audio analysis devices
• Have the option to work with external clients in your final year

This course is accredited by JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support) which encourages the delivery of workshops and lectures from industry professionals. A placement option and your final year project will provide you with opportunities to work with industry partners.

Create fashion designs and explore experimental approaches to garment making and design. We will show you how to challenge the limitations of fashion and understand its role in society.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Learn to create designs in response to different trends, market forces and technical innovations
• Work on arts and industry-informed briefs and live projects to create a portfolio of professional design and making skills
• Develop a strong understanding of the cultural, ethical and environmental concerns in the contemporary fashion industry
• Concentrate on 2D and 3D skills, and understand how to communicate ideas to manufacturers both here and abroad
• Explore 2D work using computer-aided design (CAD) for a professional finish
• Explore fabric and form to ensure applicable 3D outcomes are achieved
• Study key areas including research of ideas, design and the articulation of ideas

Develop your theoretical understanding, technical skills and creative practice in the emerging field of sonic arts through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops which aim to challenge preconceptions surrounding musical composition, performance and sound art.

You will explore varied approaches to sound practice through exposure to modern ideas and techniques in the areas of electroacoustic music, spatial sound, contemporary music thinking and sound interactivity. You will have the chance to investigate new software and hardware tools, inquire into the ideas and practical work of the most influential contemporary music thinkers, such as John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer and Brian Eno, and produce a variety of creative artefacts to begin building your own music and sound repertoire.

The course is delivered by a team of practitioners, whose work at the forefront of this field enjoy critical acclaim at an international level, and who will support you in preparing for a career in sound or further study.

Develop your skills in product design and professional practice.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Gain insight into user requirements, economic, environmental and ethical considerations, as well as materials, manufacturing, production and industry capabilities
• Use your insights to help inform the design of your products
• Design a range of products for both commercial and domestic use, including furniture, interior products, consumer goods and sustainable products
• Work on live industry briefs, which will ensure you’ll be working in real world settings to design products that make a positive contribution to the world around us

Develop a thorough and critical understanding of psychological theory and research methods.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Apply this expertise to your study of human behaviour
• Question why humans act the way they do, delving into specialist areas including drug abuse, clinical and forensic psychology and cognitive neuroscience
• Conduct contemporary psychological research, including laboratory experiments, interviews and focus groups
• Learn from a diverse and experienced teaching team with expertise in areas such as drug addiction, stress, dreams, body image, language, emotion and child development
• Be assessed on tasks that mirror real-world activities
• Learn how to apply your knowledge in the workplace

 You'll meet psychologists and skilled professionals working within psychology who will educate you in how to apply your knowledge in the workplace.

Speech and language therapists (SLT) are privileged to work with people throughout their entire lifespan, from neonatal to end of life care.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Gain a professional qualification as an SLT in three years
• Learn to provide assessment and intervention for communication impairments and difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing
• Study a variety of subjects such as psychology, linguistics and speech pathology
• Attend guest lectures from specialist clinicians and medics to ensure your learning is current and to expand your networks
• Experience ongoing and block placements through a mixed placement model

We adopt a mixed placement model, which means that you'll have the opportunity to experience ongoing and block placements. An ongoing placement means that you are on placement one day per week, whilst in university the remaining days. On a block placement, you’ll spend all week on placement, with no lectures during these periods. You’ll be required to travel to placements independently and these will be located throughout the Yorkshire and Humberside region.

You'll undertake ongoing and block work placements in all three years of your course. You'll also be able to make the most of course-related opportunities such as campaigning and raising awareness of people with communication difficulties, getting involved in the speech and language therapy society and volunteering in the UK and abroad. You’ll gain a wide range of clinical experiences with both children and adults

Explore criminal behaviour, policing and criminal justice, and cultivate a deeper understanding of our current responses to crime on this qualifying law degree.

The course is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board as meeting the academic requirements of your legal training, and completion will enable you to undertake further study in order to become a solicitor or barrister.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Develop your understanding of case law and legislation
• Engage with key criminological theories and concepts relating to crime, victimisation, responses to crime and deviance
• Develop legal analysis skills
• Have access to a wide range of law textbooks online for free through Law Trove, a subscription-only service offered by Oxford University Press

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Explore a wide range of theories within psychology, mental health, counselling, child development and psychotherapy
• Combine theoretical knowledge with opportunities to work in mental health environments and develop your ability to build effective therapeutic relationships
• Study a variety of therapeutic approaches  
• Explore psychotherapeutic models including cognitive and behavioural development and look at theories on how mental health issues develop across the lifespan
• Learn how to develop your interpersonal skills in order to build counselling relationships between you and your clients 

This course is suitable for those working in mental health services wanting to further their knowledge and career, or for those wishing to enter the health and care professions. You’ll study a variety of therapeutic approaches and will be able to tailor the course to your career ambitions. On completion, you’ll be able to build positive therapeutic relationships that can foster positive change for your clients, for example with people experiencing anxiety, depression and addiction.

You’ll practise your counselling and interpersonal skills using our interview and feedback rooms. Engaging with work-based learning opportunities will allow you to reflect upon how you use your practical skills in the real world. These activities will help you become a confident, globally minded and emotionally mature individual, enhancing your career prospects.
