By choosing to study Life Sciences and Global Sustainable Development (GSD) degree, you will be encountering these questions daily.

You will apply that knowledge to our current understandings of climate change, social justice, and food security. At the end of the first year, you will choose either a Biological Sciences or Ecology route, allowing you to study modules tailored to your interests and career aspirations.

If you have a talent for mathematics and a passion for technology, this exciting, accredited course will enable you to acquire technical skills in software engineering, algorithm analysis and system design, as well as experience of project management, research and scientific methods.

As one of the most established courses in the UK, our focus is on the principles and underpinnings of computer science, an understanding of which will give you the ability to adapt to change and new developments throughout your career. In short, while we teach using many of the latest technologies, our emphasis on fundamentals will prepare you to engage with any technology.

You will work closely with industry leaders, enabling you to develop industrially relevant subject knowledge and transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication, and planning. In your third year, you will undertake an individual project, where you will apply your knowledge to an area of your choice under the supervision of world-leading academics.

The course is taught from first principles, which means you do not need prior knowledge of computer science or programming before you arrive. Our only requirements are that you have a strong background in mathematics and the desire to succeed, we will support you through our commitment to teaching excellence and a stimulating academic community.

You may choose to spend a year in industry, research, or study abroad between Years Two and Three, or between Years Three and Four of your degree. If you choose to study abroad or take a year in industry, this will be reflected in your degree title.

On the MEng course, you will stay on for a fourth year to study more advanced material. You will also participate in a group project, which will integrate taught material as well as helping you to improve your research and development skills in a team environment.

Study abroad

You can spend a year at one of our partner institutions overseas between years Two and Three, or between Years Three and Four of your degree. We have an established exchange programme with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which provides opportunities for our students to experience teaching and learning at another world-leading institution.

MEng students on this exchange programme can choose whether to take the year as intercalated or as a replacement for one of their degree years. In addition to benefitting from a rich cultural experience, students returning from studying overseas exhibit an international profile that is attractive to potential employers.

Our Biological Sciences course spans the entire scale of biological systems, from molecules to ecosystems. Our exceptionally wide range of options allow you to choose modules that are best suited to your interests and career ambitions.

You will be exposed to cutting-edge research in molecular, cellular and whole organism biology, while covering applications of science to major global challenges such as environmental management, food security and human health.

Study abroad

As an alternative to a work placement we support student mobility with the opportunity to apply for a year abroad at one of our partner universities all over the world.

By studying linguistics together with Spanish, you will explore the fascinating human capacity for language, while also building your fluency in Spanish. As a linguist, you will learn about the structure and function of language, and about relationships between language and society.

You will also study and practice written and oral communication in Spanish, and learn broadly about communicating across languages and cultures. Your skills in linguistic analysis will support your language learning, and your knowledge of Spanish will complement your work as a linguist. This course opens many career opportunities that require the knowledge and skills of both a modern language and a deep understanding of language, culture and communication.

(75% linguistics, 25% Spanish).

Study abroad

If you wish to spend a year abroad (which we thoroughly recommend), this will take place in your third year, meaning that you will complete your degree in four years instead of three. All students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities. The Student Mobility Team offers support for these activities, and the Department's dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance.

With intelligent vehicles on the horizon of technical advancements, the automotive industry is facing a developmental challenge. How do we develop a robust technical infrastructure to support the anticipated explosive growth in smart vehicular functions, communications systems, and driverless cars? This demands a comprehensive understanding of the technology and a bottom-up approach ensuring robustness and dependability of Electronics, Communications and Control Systems.  

Through this MSc, we aim to address the knowledge gap in the areas of machine learning, automated control strategies, connectivity, and communication infrastructure, cyber-security protocols, emerging automotive networks and robust automotive embedded systems within the context of smart, connected and autonomous vehicles. This programme has extensive industrial support with the Industry Advisory Board consisting of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and RDM among others.  

Our MSc will appeal to you if you have a strong background in the subject and wish to gain advanced and rigorous training in modern economics, as preparation for a career as a professional economist or analyst.

You will receive advanced teaching in the core areas of macroeconomic and microeconomic theory, econometrics and research methods, and you will also be able to choose from a wide portfolio of optional modules.

An 8,000-word dissertation provides an opportunity to explore your own interests across these fields of study. You will be automatically enrolled on a pre-sessional Mathematics and Statistics programme to equip you with the relevant methodological skills you need to succeed.

By the end of the course, you will be able to read and understand research papers and articles in academic journals, build theoretical models, and initiate empirical research and evaluate its findings.

This four-year course enables you to pursue your interest in the languages, literature and thought of Greece and Rome, while considering the broader cultural, social and political contexts of the classical world.

You will study a broad range of literary and non-literary sources, which are taught in innovative and dynamic ways by staff engaged in groundbreaking research.

You will study Latin alongside a modern European language (current options are Italian and German) and will spend your third year studying classical subjects at one of our partner universities in Europe.

Currently, placements are available in Bologna, Padua, Rome or Venice, with recent confirmation of new placements in Berlin and Tübingen, Germany. Confirmation of available placements will be made in your second year.

As our global reach becomes increasingly important, there is a need and opportunity for organisations to connect together to deliver added value to the consumer through interlinked supply chains and efficient logistics.  

The central content is the concept of a supply network: constructing the relationships that bring it into being; commissioning the technologies that enable it to operate; managing the input, the material and the information flow; and distributing the product.  

During the course, you will develop the skills to evaluate, manage, and improve supply chain processes. You will learn to design and develop strategy, as well as understanding the operational functions of businesses.

This challenging degree crosses subject boundaries, combining economics and political analysis. Policy-making is influenced by economics and many of the policies that we see today around the world are based on economic analysis.

By considering both disciplines, you will gain a broad perspective on how governments develop policy and the impact of this on consumers, firms and political structures. The degree is very current, looking at the key issues of the day and encourages debate and discussion around them.

You can maintain a breadth of study while focusing on areas that interest you, particularly during your final year. You can choose to major in one area and then you will have the flexibility to select up to six optional modules alongside a core module in Making of Economic Policy.

Studying overseas can add immeasurably to your personal development, future study and career opportunities. It will also offer you an opportunity to experience an alternative university system.

If you’re successful in gaining a Study Abroad placement, your degree programme will become a four year programme and, assuming you pass sufficient modules whilst abroad, the title of your course changes to add the suffix ‘with Study Abroad’ to the existing title (e.g. BSc Economics with Study Abroad).
